2023.03.23 11:27 recoveringacademic I hope that "fun gameplay" will be a higher priority over "realistic animations" in future updates.

(TL;DR at bottom)
Having recently finished the game, I've been reflecting on the experience so far. It's in early access, so these thoughts are to be taken lightly.
In general, I enjoyed the game, but feel disappointed that the direction doesn't seem to realize it's potential. I am interested to hear others' thoughts. In my personal opinion, it feels like animations and realism were prioritized over fun and compelling gameplay:

Examples of features where realism > fun

Instead of prioritizing animations and realism, I hope future updates will flesh out the parts of the game that are fun:

Things that make Sons of the Forest fun:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
TL;DR
The current iteration of the game feels like animations/aesthetics are prioritized over fun gameplay and story. I hope that future updates focus more on what makes the game fun to play, and can better flesh out and tie together these systems. Currently, it's confusing that the animations and realism feels like the focal point, rather than what makes a game compelling to play.
Your thoughts?

2023.03.23 10:07 locudrolos How does this cartoon idea sound?

Imagine one of those shows like Looney Tunes or Family Guy where it's actually about a bunch of actors playing characters in a TV or theater performance every week, except it stars a group of elementary school kids who hang out in a treehouse that has a bookshelf and a TV with a PlayStation.
Our main characters would be two boys named Johnny and Bobby, and a girl named Katie, all of whom would start of at age 7 in season 1, aging up one year every season until they're 9 or 10.
The episodes would usually start with the kids coming in and deciding on which book, movie, or game they're gonna do, and then the rest of the episode is the kids playing the roles of the characters while acting out whatever story they chose. Once per season, there'd be an episode where the kids sit at the table and try to write their own story together, round-robin style.
The stories themselves would be direct parodies of real-life counterparts, albeit adapted to fit into 22 minutes.

2023.03.23 05:00 ItheraiTheMadMage My Best Advice for DMs: Run Your Homebrew Campaign in a Single Location

First of all, when I mean a single location, that doesn't mean the characters can't leave. One of the things I've noticed over and over again with both my campaigns and others is that a lot of DMs like to make grand, continent spanning adventures akin to Lord of the Rings. You arrive at a village, you do the quest, and move on. If your campaign is focused around a central location such as a large city or some type of home base location for players, there are a couple of key benefits that I noticed fairly quickly during my latest campaign that have only been reinforced that I thought might be helpful for other DMs, especially because it's not something I see talked about a lot.
First, LESS PREP. Sure there will be much more initial prep to ensure there's enough content to keep the players busy for a lot of time in case they get the urge to explore the city (which they hopefully do) but by having a central location, you are likely to have multiple locations that the players will visit more than once. You won't have to make a multitude of taverns and inns for 20 different towns and villages if the party is only staying in once city for the entirety of a campaign.
Second, NPC connections become much stronger. If all the important plot NPCs and party favorite NPCs are within walking distance because they're on the other side of town, there's no in world barrier keeping the players for interacting with repeat NPCs on a consistent basis in a manner that allows for deeper connections. That way, when you kill THAT important NPC, it will carry greater emotional weight because they have been there all this time, easily accessible at any given time. Now, I see that a lot of time this is reserved for the one NPC or "pet" the party adopts to bring with on adventures, but this method gives you a wider array of NPCs to target, not just the adopted goblin. You can kill the bartender the party has spoken with every session since the beginning, the mayor they've been getting jobs from the entire campaign, quite literally anyone the party talks to on a consistent basis.
Third, other DMs and I sometimes struggle with the exploration pillar of a travel-based campaign. Unless the party gets a reason to leave the central location, you can ignore that pillar almost entirely if you'd like. I still encourage a random encounter every once in a while when roaming the central location so the party does not feel invincible at home, but in the end its up to you. The players likely will not be upset if they do not get attacked by wilderness creatures every time they try to go somewhere, so you could get away with cutting out the exploration pillar. But, if you want to keep exploration like the party exploring outward from a central location, they will still have a place to come back to, which can help with the question the party might come to, which is "where do we go now?" If they don't know, home is always an option.
Now, I know some DMs (me included) make travelling campaigns to show off the world building they've done. My only suggestion for this is to take this style of campaign as a worldbuilding exercise. Sure, the players might spend the whole campaign in one city, but it should still feel like there is a whole world out there. Roaming merchants carry stories, parts of a main city can have suburbs of people from specific corners of the world, and the characters can and most should be from outside the central location so that they can carry hints of the outside world with them.
If you haven't run into any of these problems, then ignore this advice. You're doing great and there's no need to fix something that isn't broken. In my experience, there is one con to this method, and it is a considerable one. If you have multiple plot hooks, they ALL need to be prepped, because the party (if the hooks are all in the central location) can reach any of them at anytime. The bright side of this con, however, is you don't need to worry about prepping something in one location and the party leaving the area never to return. If anyone has any questions about specific examples from my campaign to support my argument or has any criticisms, feel free to make your voice heard in the comments. If anyone has things to add on about the pros of this as well, I am interested to see what other people think.

2023.03.23 03:39 brimstoner [Store] EXT65V2 In stock - Other boards soon

History time…
Back in 2019, we wanted to take the keyboard enthusiast market to an ideal that we wanted it to be. We removed ourselves from the groupbuy model which had wait times into an instock model. We went away with the traditional designs and made something we wanted our own. The EXT65 was an extension of what we wanted to do and what we believed in.
The problem with instock is that people miss out. We ran the first EXT65 with our limited budget, and went all-in on this design, using all our knowledge and financial capital that we earnt from the AEGIS. Our design pillars at the time were functional elegance, ergonomics and experience. What we designed is a left hand numberpad with 65%, which is now referred to as a “southpaw” 65% in the market, with the added ability of positive and negative angles. We also released multiple gasket types.
This was risky for us, but it was a very exciting time, one full of learning and also figuring out what we wanted to do. It’s also why Keyboard Treehouse was born, being able to design, produce and ship our boards end-to-end. Kind of like farm-to-table, except with metal rectangle designs, and via China. Now move forward half a decade later… We’ve seen vendors come and go like the sands in the hourglass. We’ve seen many designs, trends and fads shift and become cyclical. We’ve grown up a little bit, some of the AEBoards team getting married, transitioning to full time jobs, graduating from university, and becoming a ‘productive’ member of society. But thanks to you all, your support has kept us going on, and kept us in the hobby. We’ve expanded our AEBoards family to include Ivery (aka Ryan) who is usually the guy you’re dealing with when talking or buying from us. We’ve open a retail shop in Sydney and are always looking for ways to be better with our small team, and limited time resources.
During this time, we’ve made many friends in the hobby. The most important thing about this hobby is not the keyboard, but the friends you make along the way. We’ve tapped the shoulder of Salvun, who has helped us make this board into a real physical thing you can touch. It is the EXT65V2. It is beautiful.
About a year ago, we had a prototype unit made with Salvun and it made a trip around America. We’ve had to wait a while to get processes and things in place, luckily it was with our money and time and not with a group buy model. We are now ready to launch, with the first batch of EXT65V2 being in-stock at Salvun and Keyboard Treehouse, both with 100 units each. After that, we’ll be looking at ways to get more in stock at both these vendors, if there’s demand...
EXT65V2
The EXT65V2 is an update of our classic EXT65 design. We’ve integrated some of our changing taste as we matured and made some updates to our classic design. We like curves now, so we added some. We’ve removed the blocker and made it a true rectangle. We’ve also made it hotswap, for the GenZ’s who love constantly changing things up. We’ve kept the positive and negative angle. We’ve kept the mirrored left hand number pad, because it’s OG. We’ll know you will love it. We’ve removed numbered units, this board is for everyone and we’ll keep making them if there’s demand. We’ve also lowered the price from the first version which was a single run. Pricing is around 425USD (give/take taxes on region etc). Salvun has the hotswap PCB, Keyboard treehouse lets you pick between hotswap or soldered (which gives you more layout options)

2023.03.23 02:22 mythologicaldreamer is my "trauma" still valid even though I was brought up in a wealthier family ?

tw for abvse ig
so for context my childhood was okay i think. my therapist disagrees.
anyways, i started going to a new school fairly recently. i met my partner and a lot of my friends there and reconnected with some old ones.
i'm like, 100% sure theyre why im questioning my supposed trauma. I know they dont do it intentionally but it's happened and i havent been strong enough to tell my therapist about it just yet because she thinks i've been getting better.
my newer friends, and some of my old ones, have recently started teasing me about being rich. it's good natured teasing and stuff and they dont mean any harm by it.
the thing thats throwing me off a bit is the fact they sometimes bring up how poor they are or were. making jokes about how they never had any of the stuff i had and that i was lucky or that they wouldve never guessed that my childhood was a little wack.
heres a summary of my childhood -
when i was younger, my dad was always at work, working from around 5 am - 8pm everyday. I saw him at night and he would never really interact with me and my siblings. I thought he was amazing though. It was because he was nice, but now that i've grown up i just realized he was nice because he was never around enough to be mean.
my mom was young and had to take care of me and my three siblings for most of my life. she knew just about nothing when it came to english so it was hard for her to make friends, socialze and help us socialize as well.
but even so she wanted us to be perfect. she'd beat us with sticks, pans and whatever she could get her hands on until a couple years after I started therapy (around age 11). She'd humiliate me because I had such bad anxiety that i couldn't ask to use the bathroom sometimes. She'd make me wear diapers to school and make me watch her as she changed my baby brother and asked if thats what i was, a baby.
nothing we did was good enough for her and even when we did nothing at all we'd be punished and humiliated.
she'd also let men at the temple we went to touch us, put us in their laps, kiss us etc.
it sucked. But i was wealthy. We had a nice house, three computers, three TV's, two nice cars, a treehouse, a trampoline, everything we could've wanted.
I don't remember asking for any of it. my siblings and i were to scared to ask for anything really. it was just stuff that sort of, appeared at our house and helped distract us.
i'm just now asking because some of my friends had it a lot worse. like my partners friend, he was starved, extremely religious now because of trauma, beaten etc. his family is also kind of on the poorer side.
my partner grew up poor as well. no tv, small house all that jazz.
so my question is, is my trauma actually trauma or am i over exaggerating ?

2023.03.23 00:47 greenturtle848 How to Gaslight, Gatekeep, and Girlboss your way into a top school

  1. Apply to as many schools as possible. Tell them all that they're your number one choice, and absolutely pop off in those "why us" essays.
  2. Inflate your GPA a bit. Add some more points to your SAT score, too. Hack the college board database and get that 99th percentile. Colleges are able to change their acceptance rates and yield rates, so why can't you change your stats too?
  3. Add some quirky ECS: Non-profits and research experience are a big NO NO. Instead, tell them you live in wilderness, and you live off the earth. You grow all of your own food, and you tame animals when you're not building treehouses. You take a 3 hour walk to commute to school in a big city, but you're a country girl at heart <3
  4. Become homeschooled. AKA create a fake high school and create a fake transcript from there. You are your teachers, principals, guidance counselors, hell even the school nurse! That way you can be sure to get good rec letters.
  5. When you get accepted to schools, tell them about how much money you're getting from other schools (even if you're not). Tell them that you're a must have, and they'll regret not doing everything they can to bring you to their school.
  6. Finally, and most importantly: Reject them before they reject you. "Sorry, but I got into way better schools than yours, and I don't even care if I get in here. You're irrelevant. XOXO"
Follow these steps and you're sure to make it into any school you desire. And if you don't, then it's actually them who was rejected, not you<3

2023.03.22 19:34 dreamsofthesun [ Google Docs ] The Phantom of the Opera

Hey, I'm Bliss - 31F, advanced, etc etc. I typically produce around 4-5 paragraphs per reply (depending on the necessary detail) and expect similar from partners.
This might be a long shot, but I'm seeking a partner for a fandom roleplay based on some variation of The Phantom of the Opera. I've read the novel a million times over, have seen the movie (eh), and have watched the musical in its various forms and will happily incorporate elements of any and all of them according to our plotting and mutual satisfaction. I will also happily play Erik, Christine, or OC's depending on what we decide.
Please be 25+ and willing to exchange writing samples. Ideally we will plot and chat over Discord and write over Google Docs (though I may be persuaded to use other mediums). DM me if you are interested as I'm not a fan of reddit chat.

---------
( An unrelated writing sample since I haven't got any recent work based on PotO: )

A slight frost had settled upon the world in the hours before dawn, giving everything a glittering, dream-like quality. Had the air not been so chilled and the wind so biting, she may have thought herself still asleep as she emerged from the inn and shuffled stiffly in the direction of the post chaise where her fellow travelers had already gathered to await departure. Each of their faces seemed deathly pale in the pre-dawn light and she knew her own countenance must be equally so--she could barely feel her extremities as she stepped eagerly into the cabin of the chaise only to find it nearly as cold as the outside. Had the journey not been nearing its end, she surely would have returned indoors and to her bed; however lumpy and uncomfortable it may have been, it was still preferable to the stone-hard bench onto which she had been crammed with two rather large women.
As the chaise lurched into motion, Marianne Sedgewick could only wonder at the events that had led up to this moment. She recalled the day several months prior when her beloved father had first shown signs of illness--nothing alarming on the outset, of course, just a bit of wheezing. But it was a surprise given that the man had never fallen ill a day in his life--more so when the wheezing gradually turned into coughing, and still more so when the coughing began to produce blood. All of his wealth could not produce a single surgeon who could remedy the malady (presumably consumption) and he swiftly began to fade into a shell of his former self until one day he simply didn’t wake up, leaving his only child to wonder at her future with only the dwindling remnants of her family’s fortune standing between herself and complete destitution. This was how she had come to find herself in the post chaise driving further and further away from town and all that was familiar in search of a mysterious house owned by a mysterious man in possession of a mysterious ward who was (if the ad was to be believed) in dire need of both discipline and a personal education.
And to think that the girl who had debuted with immense success not two years prior was now seeking employment as a governess!
When not huddled in the corner of a dingy little cabin and wrapped in every wool cloak she owned, Marianne was astonishingly pretty. Her debut had been a success not simply because her family name was both well-known and respected, but because her figure and carriage were exceptionally graceful and her face youthful and lovely. Her hair, usually curled elegantly, was not quite golden enough to be considered blonde but not quite dark enough to be considered brunette. Her eyes were a striking shade of jade green, her nose small and slightly tip-tilted, and her lips a bit too wide but pleasantly full. Under normal circumstances, her expression seemed a mixture of alertness and bemusement--she could laugh easily and did so often.
At the moment, though, her eyes were dulled by weariness and her mouth was merely a thin, straight line. It grew thinner and straighter as the hours passed until, at last, the chaise came to a halt before the inn of a small village. Marianne exited the carriage with no small feeling of apprehension and waited as the driver removed her travel case. Then, she stood along the side of the road and watched as the vehicle rolled off into the distance and beyond sight before turning to look about her. The sun had risen well into the sky by now and had warmed the air somewhat, but everything within the little village seemed dark and sleepy and cold despite. She shivered unconsciously before glancing down at her luggage, wondering how on earth she was going to carry it to...wherever she was going.
Almost as if summoned by the question in her thoughts, a phaeton appeared around the bend in the road and approached the inn, driven by a slender, graying individual and containing a stout, serious-looking woman. Almost before the vehicle had come to a stop in front of Marianne, the woman within opened the door and had a foot on the ground, hopping down eagerly to greet her, “Are you Miss Marianne Sedgewick by chance? Splendid! We expected you much later. I’m glad I thought to come early and wait.” She turned to the driver who was climbing down a bit stiffly, “Mr. Turner, if you please..” She gestured at Marianne’s case, to which the man responded with an incoherent rumble, then she ushered Marianne into the phaeton, “It really is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Sedgewick. I am Elizabeth Thurston, Roville Hall’s housekeeper.”
“It is a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Thurston.”
As soon as Mr. Turner was able to lift Marianne’s things onto the back of the carriage and climb into the driver’s seat once more, they were off. The road wound through the little village for half a mile before giving way to a seemingly vast, open moorland.

2023.03.22 19:00 A_SNAPPIN_Turla Possibly redoing my deck w/ composite decking. Where to buy? What to know?

I built (by myself) a ~30ft deck butted against my house during COVID. It's just around a foot off the ground with no rails and makes for a nice place for some chairs and a picnic table. I love it but I was never impressed with the lumber from Lowe's. It was pretty wet when I got it and after screwing it down some of it warped quite a bit. Another issue I had was the stain I chose. I picked a darker stain with something like "ash" in the name thinking it would be a mild greyish tint. After drying the stain out almost a navy blue color with a bit of a grey tint to it. It looked awful with the yellow treated decking and any place the stain was uneven it was very obvious and bad looking. I ended up just buying an opaque version of the stain so my deck is effectively painted a dark greyish blue. The third issue is that runoff from the roof has caused a drip line to wear the stain away.
I was going to get a small gutter installed on the part of the house that drips on the deck and just sand and restain the deck. Some pieces are a little ugly but I could live with it. I don't know how long it would be before I had to start replacing boards.
I've been thinking about longer term though and I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and replace the decking with recycled plastic boards. I need 55 boards I can't remember the exact deck measurement but id probably need the 8' boards. If it's $17-$25 per board based on what I'm seeing it works out to ~$1375. With the composite deck I won't need the gutter installed which I imagine would be at least $500. If I the wood the stain and sealer would be another ~$100. Plus the process of sanding and staining along with future effort and maintenance.
I'm thinking the difference between the cost of adding a gutter and refinishing the deck and resurfacing with composite is small enough that it's justifiable to spend the extra $700-800 on composite. I've been planning on building my kids a small treehouse eventually so I'll save the old decking and upcycle it too.
Does anyone have any experience working with composite decking? Anything I should know? Is there a better place to buy than Home Depot and Lowes? I don't really care for either place but they are convenient. Any input would be appreciated.

2023.03.22 18:13 matanuki Mechanics for an 'Offscreen' Battle Ticking Clock

Hey, new DM here. I'm running a 5e campaign for my partner based on a kitbash of the Lost Mines and Icespire Peak modules with a homebrew thru-line.
TL;DR: I'm looking for suggestions on how to run an 'offscreen' battle involving NPCs assaulting a stronghold as a feint while the party sneaks in to assassinate the leader, rescue villagers, and maybe blow up the castle.
My current idea was to give the player sending stones to keep in contact with the fight outside. We'd stay in initiative the whole time. Each round I'd roll to see how the fight outside was going. Good rolls could pull enemies from the map, bad rolls could add them, cause lair actions, or endanger the NPCs. I would love some advice/ideas for this mechanic and how to make it better.
Context:
I'm getting ready to run the Redbrand Hideout encounter with raised stakes. The Redbrands are not a small gang of ruffians, they are a 100+ strong mercenary company turned marauders that have set upon Phandalin after being cut loose from conflict in the Silver Marches. Rather than disband, their numbers seem to be growing under leadership of the mysterious figure Glasstaff.
While the party was at Gnomengarde, the Redbrands laid siege to Phandalin on orders to capture Rockseeker and the party members. They burned the inn and woodcarver's home to the ground. The bodies of Toblen, his wife, and the woodcarver were hung on a makeshift gallows in front of the Townmaster's Hall.
After meeting with Sildar and some Harper agents, the plan is to have the townsfolk and NPCs raise arms to attack Tresendar Manor head on and draw 60-70 soldiers out into the field. The party will sneak in to assassinate Glasstaff, recover intel on his employer, rescue the missing NPCs (including Iarno Albrek, lol), and optionally try to demolish the manor with a set of high-level Glyph of Warding spell scrolls.
The feel I'm going for is kind of heist+007 mission. The player seems to really enjoy stealthy battles, but she's not a rogue. She's a Lvl4 Order of Scribes wizard with a Warrior and an Expert as sidekicks. If you haven't run sidekicks-- these are NPC statblocks that resemble an extremely simplified Fighter and Rogue, respectively.
I figure keeping the Ruffians at CR 0.5/1 will let the player feel like James Bond fighting henchmen 1-2 at a time, while still presenting a major threat in large numbers. I'd also love any ideas of how to make Glasstaff more interesting to fight.

2023.03.22 17:51 fuckiayze My first (and decidedly canon) ending went something like this

Laura from the get go was distrustful of the cop, even if they did bond a bit during captivity. This meant he didn’t let her go since she failed to shoot him after Ryan (human) unfortunately killed Chris Hackett. Being convinced by Travis, Jedediah and Bobby (alive) agreed to keep Laura alive as long as she stayed locked up even though Laura killed Constance. Ryan bled out after killing Chris, wanting to stay human and not stabbing Bobby while he had the chance. A lot of my playthrough were ‘failed’ combat events, where the player character didn’t have it in them to end up shooting back. For example, Abi ended up not shooting Nick even though he was being a massive incel because that was still her sweet and kind friend Nick, and she was terrified. Thus, Nick remained infected and tore Abi’s head off. Ryan, who saved Nick from the hunter because his adrenaline was high also shot at the bush at the firepit (after waiting to confirm the first time around), killing Jacob who ran to save Abi after he failed to get the rotor arm (my dad played with me in co-op and he’s terrible at QTEs). Emma, feeling abandoned by Jacob, went to the treehouse. Feeling adventurous and not knowing anything about the werewolves, she opened the door, leading to her demise by Max. Max, who returned to human form after Ryan killed Chris Hackett, was killed immediately upon getting to shore. Laura, Dylan, and Kaitlyn, we’re the last ones alive.

2023.03.22 17:27 The_Real_Scrotus elementary level science fiction

My daughter is in 3rd grade and is a pretty avid reader. She's starting to read shorter chapter books. Right now she's working her way through the Magic Treehouse books to give an idea of her reading level. She's a big fan of fantasy, and she absolutely loves anything to do with space so I think she'd love science fiction as well. But I'm really struggling to think of sci-fi books at an appropriate reading level for her. I can think of lots of fantasy or adventure books I read at her age, but no sci-fi.
What can you all suggest for her?

2023.03.22 13:20 MelasD Amelia: The Level Zero Hero Chapter 82 (An OP MC Isekai LitRPG)

Synopsis:

Ten years ago, Amelia woke up alone and lost in a broken world where she had to fight for her survival.
Now, after reaching the pinnacle of power, defeating the Void itself, and escaping the abyss, she has finally found her way back into the real world. But instead of finding herself on Earth, she is in the land of Vacuos. A fantasy world with magic, monsters, Classes, and Levels. A world that is governed by a System like it were a video game.
And when rewarded with a Class befitting her accomplishments— to become a powerful [Hero] that will forever dedicate her life to protecting this world that is not her own— she only has one response.
“Absolutely not. I’m going to live a normal life now, thank you very much.”
After all, who needs a Class when you're already the strongest anyways?

“Is this it?” Noele asked as she eyed the small cave.
The trail ended here. There was no mistaking it— the large hoofprints continued further into the darkness, so this had to be it. The Noble Spellsword glanced back and nodded at her companion.
“Get ready, Garron,” she warned him.
“Right.”
The burly man nodded, readying his large shield. He strode forward as drew her blade. The two adventurers approached the cave entrance, but a voice called out to them from the trees. They glanced back towards a nearby thicket. A purple man stood there, two arms crossed as he spoke loudly for them to hear.
“Do not damage its legs!” Xakor gestured at his thighs with his free hands. “The kretus boar’s meat is mostly inedible apart from its legs! You want to target its neck or underbelly!”
Noele blinked back at the [Chef]. “Xakor! What are you doing here? It’s dangerous— get back!”
“Xrr, I’ll be fine,” he said simply. He tapped a finger on the rings around his fingers. “I have my own artifacts to protect me. I would even be able to survive an encounter with an A-rank threat for up to five minutes, so there is no reason to worry for my safety.”
“But it’s still dangerous…” she trailed off.
“It’ll be fine.” Garron spoke up, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Xakor is the one who led us here. He survived an encounter with this kretus boar once before. I am sure he can handle himself.”
“Right.” Even knowing that, Noele still pursed her lips.
Certainly, it was true that Xakor was the one who sent them on this mission. He had stumbled into the kretus boar on the way to Wolfwater, and it had attacked him. Apparently, the [Chef] had actually hurt the monster with his artifacts before he escaped, but he knew it was going to pose a threat to the nearby villages considering its vindictive nature.
So he had hired both Noele and Garron to hunt down the kretus boar before it could fully recover. After all, it was a B-ranked threat, and its home was likely destroyed a few weeks back during the wildfire spurred by the Miststorm Riders.
Of course, Xakor had ulterior motives too. He wanted to stock up on meat for his brand new restaurant run by Amelia. Noele was still processing that fact— she couldn’t believe that the Patron of the Culinary Sciences was opening a restaurant here in Wolfwater of all places. Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that he would ever visit her backwater village, let alone do that.
Noele had entertained the idea that maybe Xakor would open up one of his many restaurant chains in Whiteridge, considering that it was actually a city. But Wolfwater was a farming village. It only had a single inn for passing [Merchants] or [Traders] to stay. It made no sense for a restaurant to ever be opened up in some place like this.
However, it was actually happening. This was reality. And yet, this wasn’t even the most surprising part. Because he wans’t just opening a restaurant in Wolfwater, he was partnering with Amelia— a literal non-[Chef]— out of all people.
Sure, the blonde girl thought that her mentor’s cooking was pretty good— each time she had tried those so-called ‘Earth foods’, she had been impressed— but she didn’t think that it was anywhere comparable to Xakor’s cooking. Apparently, the Patron of the Culinary Sciences disagreed because he was letting Amelia handle most of the cooking for the restaurant.
Noele knew better than to question the cooking knowledge of a [Chef] who was above Level 50. But she still found it quite perplexing, even knowing that they were both otherworlders, so there was evidently some bias involved. The blonde girl wondered if this restaurant would actually take off, considering Amelia’s past track record with the food stand. Maybe having Xakor’s name attached would actually bring in customers.
However, nothing was certain. And while Noele hoped for the best, she was expecting the worst.
She shook her head as she strode forward alongside Garron. She had to focus right now. The kretus boar was close. And while it was weak compared to her, it was still a threat to the Steel Tank. It had to have been at least Level 40. Usually, only low-leveled monsters were harvested for food, while high-leveled monster parts were used for alchemy, herbalism, or even smithing.
However, the kretus boar was special because their legs were actually quite soft and tender, so they could be cooked and served as food. They weren’t a delicacy by any means, but considering their size, the meat from even a single leg could feed a family of four for months.
So the two adventurers didn’t want to damage the kretus boar’s legs. And not only that… well, Noele wasn’t going to be joining the fight either.
She came to a halt right at the mouth of the cave as Garron drew closer. He raised his short sword, edging forward with his shield raised, entering the darkness.
“Remember,” she called out. “No Skills.”
The Steel Tank glanced back at her, his lips twisted into a frown. And while he always wore a slight frown on his face even when he was in a jovial mood, she knew he was actually upset this time around. A little bit nervous too— very nervous, probably.
And he had every right to feel that way. After all, he wasn’t allowed to use his Skills. Noele wouldn’t let him. If he drew power from the World System, that would defeat the purpose of all this. He was the one who asked her to grow stronger like she did, and this was exactly what she had to do under Amelia’s tutelage.
Under normal circumstances, Garron could probably dispose of a kretus boar without risking his life. But since he couldn’t use his Skills, there was a very real chance that he could die to the monster. He drew forward warily as Noele just watched.
She said she wouldn’t intervene unless it really looked like he couldn’t handle this on his own. So she looked on as a figure emerged from the shadows. A looming creature, standing over twenty feet tall. It was the kretus boar, and it was already mad.
It beat its front hooves on the ground before charging. Garron yelped, bracing himself for the monster’s attack. It crashed into him as he raised his shield, sending him flying into the air. The Steel Tank landed with a groan as the kretus boar continued barreling towards him with a terrible roar.
Could boars even roar? Noele was pretty sure regular boars didn’t make that kind of a sound. But the kretus boar did. The Steel Tank scrambled to his feet as the monster’s footfalls caused the ground to quake. It rammed into him once more, but this time, he held his ground.
Garron grunted as he was pushed against the rock wall of the cavern. He clung onto his shield with both his hands, gritting his teeth as the Noble Spellsword pursed her lips.
“You have to surpass your limits!” she called out. “Do not use your Skills— overcome it with your own strength!”
“I… am… trying!” Garron shouted as he stepped to the side.
The monster stumbled forward, crashing into the rock wall, and he swung out with his short sword. He slashed the monster’s underbelly open as it reeled. But right as he circled around the kretus boar, it kicked out with its hind legs, knocking the Steel Tank’s shield out of his hand.
His eyes went wide, and it whirled around to face him. He tried to back away but the kretus boar was faster. All Garron could do was thrust forward with his short sword. The attack dug deep into the monster’s neck, but it wasn’t enough to take it down. Its eyes flashed, and it headbutted him, sending him crashing into the other side of the cavern.
Noele’s eyes flickered. She saw the way Garron struggled to get back to his feet. His chestplate was dented, and blood trickled down his forehead. The kretus boar charged his way once more. And the Noble Spellsword finally intervened.
With a single slash, she sliced the kretus boar in half. Her blade shone with a bright gold light, illuminating the dark cave chamber for a brief moment. The cavern was far larger and went deeper than she thought, but it didn’t matter. Her Elegant Noble Slash got the job done.
The monster collapsed, dead in an instant. Noele drew back and sheathed her sword in a single swift motion. She turned to Garron as he staggered to his feet.
“Are you alright?” she asked, running up to help him.
“I’m… fine.” The Steel Tank rubbed his forehead, wiping away the blood. He had a small cut just above his right eye, but he was otherwise fine. “Fighting without Skills is harder than I thought…” he murmured.
“Tell me about it,” Noele said as she offered him a shoulder. “It took me a while to get the hang of it, and it was only thanks to your help. So don’t let it get you down.”
He shook his head and snorted. “I’m not upset that I lost to a B-ranked monster— I’m more upset that I’ll have to get a new chestplate.”
The blonde girl chuckled. “Well, you still have plenty of time to learn.”
“I knew this wasn’t going to be easy,” Garron continued. “I saw how hard you trained to get to where you are now, Noele. Honestly, I’m more impressed by you now than ever. You are quite amazing.”
She smiled, nudging him as she helped him limp out of the cave. “Thanks— but we can talk about this later. Let’s just treat your injuries and let Xakor know it’s over.”
“Of course.” Garron nodded back at her.
The two adventurers slowly stepped back out into the clearing, and Xakor approached them curiously. The [Chef] had a bag slung around his shoulders— presumably to carry the kretus boar’s meat back to Wolfwater. They told him that it was over, and he quickly got to work.
Noele watched from the side as Garron took a sip from a healing potion while Xakor dismantled the kretus boar of edible parts. When they were finished, the sun was still hanging high in the sky, and it was time to get back.
It would be about sundown by the time they arrived in Wolfwater. It wasn’t a long trip, and they would reach the village a lot sooner if it were just the two adventurers. However, they weren’t really in a rush, so they took their time, leaving the empty cave behind them.
—--
But the cave wasn’t actually empty. What Noele neglected to notice was that further down the tunnel was a second kretus boar. A smaller one— about three-quarters the size of its partner. It had been injured. Burned during the forest fire. But its partner provided for it, hunting for food for the both of them.
And when its partner didn’t return that night, it forced itself up. But all it found was a corpse.
It flew into a rage. Its thunderous roar sent the nearby fauna scattering in terror. It curled up into a ball, grieving over the death of its partner.
And as it lay there overnight, something found it. Something… sinister.
A depravity that had tried to crawl its way into the world, but was cut short before it could fully manifest. The trace remains of a twisted magic that carried the will of the Void. It had roamed around the village after the Cloying Witch was prematurely killed, searching for a new host. And now, it preyed on the lone kretus boar’s anger. It fed on the suffering of the world, overwhelming the World System’s control.
The monster mindlessly accepted this power, and its body began to change.

2023.03.22 12:53 NBiDM my sim and her childhood bestie grew up to teens with bad compatibility and I love it

So, my sim Ava's first friend ever when they were toddlers was Bella; they both were inseparable, autonomously making the cutest interactions and when they grew up to children, they became "partners in crime" and pulled lots of pranks in school and basically lived in the treehouse at Ava's house, lol.
However, when they grew up to teens, Ava gained the active trait and has been focusing a lot more on school and sports, basically training 24/7. She is still a goofball, though. She and her dad are jokesters and she loves mischief. When she met Bella again, they suddenly had bad compatibility!
I think it's because Bella got the serious trait (custom trait) upon growing up and doesn't like high-energy sims. I didn't peek in CAS so I'm still trying to figure it out, but I think she also hates talking about hobbies, which Ava loves, cause she can spend hours raving about sports.
So suddenly, they are besties and lots of their interactions go wrong. And I find that so fitting, it gives me a "We both grew up and are drifting apart but are somehow still drawn to each other, because we are clinging to our good memories" vibes. It is such a good storytelling tool.
Because Bella, apparently, has a crush on Ava despite it all! Ava is oblivious though she ditched prom to hang out with Bella at the fair - Bella flirted with her but no romance bar appeared yet even though the interaction went well.
I'm very excited to see where this is headed, I love this new compatibility feature and what stories open up for it!

Hello folks. After voting for your favourite strategy games of all time in our very first RPS Bestest Best: Reader Edition list last month, this time we're asking you do it all over again for your favourite survival games. With Sons Of The Forest taking over Steam at the moment and Capcom's sensational remake of Resident Evil 4 just on the horizon, we've got survival games on the brain right now - or at least the bit that hasn't been chewed or nibbled on by the worrying pack of zombs circling the Treehouse lately, anyway Link to article

2023.03.22 11:07 Astice_Pensante What are we all playing this weekend? (03/22/2023)

I write this a few days before you'll read it, for tomorrow is St Patrick's day, which is a bank holiday for me. I believe in Ireland this is traditionally spent destroying green food die, and complaining about Americans calling it "Patty's day", but time will tell. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to play video games, or if that will be some sort of sacrilege, but I'll definitely be able to at the weekend, right? The RPS treehouse at large will be sampling a variety of delights, it seems Link to article
