2023.03.23 21:28 LongJonSiIver Fairly Oddparents Reboot
For over 20 years, audiences watched the adventures of a boy named Timmy Turner and his fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda. Fast paced and funny, The Fairly OddParents asked the question, “What if a kid had an unlimited number of wishes at his disposal?” and answered that question with, “He’d get into trouble, constantly.”
Now who would we get if the same fairy godparents took a new kid under their wing? A kid whose last name isn’t Turner? More hijinx and comedy, of course!
You might be wondering, why make yet another Fairly OddParents? Aren’t a series of shorts, 10 seasons, a live-action series and 3 live-action films enough? Well, my friend, the answer is no. Absolutely not. You can never have too much magic!
An 11-minute comedy just like its predecessor, the new Fairly OddParents is going to retain the retro, absurdist, irreverent sitcom feel the original had, with some added poignancy, serialization, and a tighter focus on character. Gags will still abound but will also have a bit more of an emotional core.
Timmy’s problems were external: evil babysitter and checked-out parents. Hazel’s challenges are more internal: life changes and becoming more comfortable in her identity. Teaming up with Cosmo and Wanda will give Hazel an opportunity to stand out and become the big, bold, hero she longs to be! And it’ll all begins… with a wish.
Hazel’s story and wishes will go further into what makes her tick, connecting to audiences with both humor and heart. Hazel’s journey will be one of self-acceptance and confidence. She starts the beginning of the series daunted by her new circumstances, but thanks to Cosmo and Wanda’s magical guardianship, and the new experiences and adventures she goes on via her wishes, she soon learns to put herself out there and just live life.
For Cosmo and Wanda, it’s about finding a new groove. They’re coming out of retirement and have decided to take on a monumental task in godparenting again! But why? In short, because they love it.
Godparenting is their calling, and they’re good at it. (At least Cosmo thinks so – though that ain’t saying much!) But the world is different, and kids today are more self-aware than ever before. They’re encouraged to vocalize their emotions, inspire, create change, and question tradition.
Because of this, fairy godparenting looks different, wishes aren’t wishing like they used to, and they’re trying their best to adapt!
We’re setting out to tell a new story in a new town, to introduce the amazing Fairly OddParents world to a new audience, while keeping the wide-ranging, ageless humor that will appeal to everyone, regardless of whether they grew up on the original, for some hilarious family co-viewing goodness. So yeah, we’re making another Fairly OddParents. To quote Timmy Turner, “What could possibly go wrong?!
The Story
Ten-year-old Hazel Wells has just moved to the big city of Dimmadelphia with her parents, so her dad could start a new job. On top of being in a new city, it’s the first time she’s been without her brother, who’s just started his first year of college. A bright, fun, creative kid, Hazel’s new situation suddenly has her feeling unsure of herself. But all that changes when the pink-and-green-haired couple next door reveals they’re no ordinary neighbors, they’re Cosmo and Wanda, fairy godparents! And they’re coming out of retirement to make all of Hazel’s wishes come true!
When we last saw our beloved pink-and-green-headed fairy godparents, in The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder, they were godparenting their second generation of Turner children, but after so long with just one family, they made the decision to hang up their fairy crowns and retire. Surely no new child could rival the Turners in their hearts, so why even try?! Jump to 10,000 years of vacationing through time and space! Exploring the wonders of Ancient Rome before it collapsed! Hobnobbing with aristocracy in 18th century France! Journeying to the moons of Jupiter in the year 26,000 P.G., whatever P.G. stands for!
Now they’ve settled down – no longer in some kid’s fishbowl but posing as humans in the bustling city of Dimmadelphia, assuming the form of endearing, across-the-hall neighbors to the Wells. Mimicking human life, Cosmo and Wanda set their sights on a peaceful retirement, ready to live out the remainder of their fairy days in an apartment that secretly offers direct access to Fairy World! That is, until they meet Hazel and are reminded why they loved their old job so much in the first place. Not since Timmy has a kid so tugged on their heart strings, and the instinct to fairy godparent quickly consumes them. Soon, they find themselves as fidget toys on Hazel’s backpack, ooey gooey blobs in her lava lamp, and even assuming the form of human bellhop and concierge at a hotel Hazel wished for. But after 10,000 years of using their magic only on themselves, are they really ready to get back in the game?
(Spoiler: they’re not, but they’re going to do it anyway!)
Hazel Wells
Black 10 years old
Spunky, fun, curious, and hugely imaginative, Hazel Wells is a small fry in a big world! Like, literally, she’s small. A petite cutie pie. A li’l nugget. She’s our tiny hero with a huge heart!
Think for a moment… Have you ever been the smallest kid in class? You have to ask for help to reach things, every year you get paraded to the front line for the class picture, and you get a patronizing pat on the head every time you do a great job at something – and that’s if they even notice you! Just about every kid can relate to the frustration of feeling, well, small. So when Hazel Wells moves to the BIG city of Dimmadelphia on account of her dad taking on a new job and is forced to leave behind everything she once knew – her friends, her home, and her big brother, Antony – she’s left feeling smaller than ever before.
But that’s not about to stop her! In spite of her miniature stature, Hazel is bold! She’s enthusiastic about life and all its wonders, and is an adventurer who loves to explore and ask questions! It’s what makes her such a great wisher – she’s curious about people, and the world, and hungry to learn more about her place in it.
At the very start of the series, she’s feeling a little more on the introverted than extroverted side. She’s in a new town and trying her best to be happy about it, but she always felt her brother Antony was like her secret superpower. He was smart, kind, confident, and most importantly, BIG. Having Antony around was an instant “in'' with people at school. All her teachers already knew and loved him, mean kids knew she had a protector, and cool kids thought she was cool just by association. Without him, she’s like Linus without his blanket… Dumbo without his feather. Without him, she’s just… Hazel. And just in this moment at least, she doesn’t feel like that’s enough.
Being chosen by Cosmo and Wanda as their fairy godkid is just the push Hazel needs to bust out of her shell and blossom! Where Timmy’s wishes were often self-serving, Hazel, at times, cares too much about other people. A little empathy is great. An over-abundance of it can lead to mental fatigue and well, chaos. Making wishes (and mistakes) and learning from them will teach her to love and put herself first, and share that love with the rest of the world.
And once the wishing begins, look out, because just like with Timmy, Hazel’s wishes are driven by who she is… and by the fact that she is a CHILD. And children are nothing if not passionate and unpredictable! Hazel’s wishes (and their undoing) will come mainly from the following personality traits…
She’s smart!
Hazel has a bit of an intellectual edge and tends to overthink things, thanks to her brainy mom and dad, so her wishes will have an extra layer of smarts to them. However, the bit of knowledge behind the wish won’t necessarily make it a wise wish. Children are charmingly lacking in critical thinking skills! Apologies to any children reading this. It’s not your fault. Your brains just aren’t at that developmental stage yet. It’s okay, you’ll get there. Also, who sent you this bible? This bible is property of Nickelodeon Animation Studio and its parent company.
She’s caring!
Hazel cares deeply about other people and fairness (so help you if Hazel sees you cut in line or litter…), so a lot of her wishes come from her compassion and her sense of right and wrong. Unfortunately, 10-year-olds don’t have a great grasp on nuance and tend to think of justice in black-and-white, and that is gonna lead Hazel into some sticky wishes.
She’s quirky!
Hazel’s an oddball with unusual interests and instincts. Timmy’s whole thing was that he was an average boy with average boy wishes. Hazel is… different, partly from being around her dad’s studies of freaky happenings in human history, partly from being around her mom’s studies into the human mind (also freaky), but also… it’s just who she is! She’s a feeler, adaptable, and full of imagination. This manifests in myriad ways, from turning her thoughts into songs and singing them aloud; to having niche obsessions with nature; to collecting a bunch of twigs, putting googly eyes on the twigs, and naming all the twigs.
In conclusion, Hazel’s wishes and adventures will inevitably result in making a lot of beautiful, messy mistakes. Hazel will learn and grow from each of these mistakes, just as all kids do! But Hazel’s learning and growing is gonna be full of magic, making it a heck of a lot more fun than the slow, boring growth the rest of us had to put up with.
Cosmo and Wanda (Returning Characters… obviously)
White, ageless
Green-haired, daffy, and childlike, Cosmo is the same whirlwind of fun we already know and love, but a little wiser for his additional 10,000 years. He didn’t do it on purpose, but it’s hard not to pick up a thing or two about human nature when you’ve lived this long. Cosmo is still quite dimwitted and will muck up a wish five ways from Sunday, but he’ll accidentally give you an epiphany here and there too. This is a Cosmo that’s gotten a little zen.
Sassy and silly, yet pragmatic, Wanda has always been the brains of the godparenting operation, and that dynamic remains the same. Problem is, these brains have been out of the game for a loooooong time, so while she might once have seen the dangers in making Timmy a giant pair of cheese pants, now it’s not as clear to Wanda what might go wrong with a wish. Consequently, go wrong, it will!
Cosmo and Wanda have a very loving, supportive dynamic. They both have their flaws and are very different from one another, but they’re also each other’s biggest fans.
Cosmo and Wanda both provide aspects of what Hazel lost when Antony went away to college. In Cosmo, she has a silly playmate. Cosmo is drawn to Hazel because he immediately connects to her oddball nature. Someone who’s down to put googly eyes on twigs? That’s his kind of kid. Cosmo will help Hazel approach the world with more openness. In Wanda, she has a nurturing, non-parental guardian again. Wanda is drawn to Hazel because she’s a good-hearted mess. Cosmo sees Hazel putting googly eyes on twigs and thinks, “Fun!” But Wanda sees the emotional need behind Hazel giving those twigs rich emotional backstories and relationships. Wanda sees a sweet kid in need of companionship and guidance and helps Hazel work out her problems through play and fun.
Timmy, Cosmo, and Wanda had a particular kind of friendship. Timmy and Cosmo were like a pair of unruly, id-driven goofballs with Wanda as the put-upon Mom. When a wish got out of control, Timmy needed heaps of pushing and prodding to clean up his messes. With Hazel, Cosmo, and Wanda, it will play out as a more evenly matched trio, with the comedy and dynamics shifting to fit the story and emotional core.
In a way, they’re all in need of help – Hazel because she’s new to making wishes, and Cosmo and Wanda because they’ve been on a 10,000-year break. Their dynamic will be about growing and getting better at magic together. Sometimes, a wish goes out of control because of Hazel, and Cosmo and Wanda must save the day. Sometimes, a wish goes out of control because of Cosmo, and Hazel and Wanda must save the day. And sometimes… well, you get it. All three will be the crisis and the solutions in a more equal measure
Angela Wells
Black, early 50s
Hazel’s mother Angela is an intelligent, poised therapist who’s accomplished all her life goals and continues to achieve. She has her own private practice and created a self-help therapy program, the “Be Wells Method.” Her “Be Wells” books and “Be Wells” therapy app are big hits with celebrities and on social media. Angela’s always taking inspiration from Hazel by osmosis. She’s constantly planning, strategizing, and developing her program, with plans to offer the “Wee Wells Method” for kids and “Deep Wells Method” for seniors.
Angela loves her daughter, but is such an expert in helping adults, she often forgets that Hazel isn’t one, and tries to tackle Hazel’s issues the same way she would help a grown woman in her 30s formulate a business plan. Sit down > offer coffee or tea > identify problem > offer solution. As a result, Hazel can spout a lot of therapy speak, but still has no idea how to deal with the basic kid things troubling her.
When Angela unknowingly gets caught up in the magic of Hazel’s wishes, she will always try to find a way to make it a “value add” to their home or her work. There are no problems in Angela’s world, only opportunities! Angela is a roll-with-the-punches kind of lady, so if Cosmo and Wanda suddenly fill the house with squid in a wish gone wrong, well then darn it, she’s gonna find a way to make calamari. She is often distracted and on the phone with her trusted assistant Beatrish via bluetooth earpiece. Which is great for Hazel, because keeping fairies a secret is a must!
Like Cosmo and Wanda, Angela and her husband, Marcus, are head over heels in love, despite having near opposite personalities. Their differences are often a point of hilarious conflict - Angela is minimalist, tidy, and thrives on structure, while Marcus is reckless and thrives in organized chaos. Both extroverts, their life has caused them to laugh, laugh, laugh through their challenges, always bringing them closer together.
Marcus Wells
Black, early 50s
Hazel’s father, Marcus, is a scatterbrained, but brilliant scholar, professor, and author who studies the intersection of human history, and the paranormal. He’s a guy who fully believes in every kind of magical/ mystical/inexplicable occurrence (witches, werewolves, ghosts, alien encounters, etc.), but will talk your ear off with the scientific explanation for each.
The Wellses have moved to Dimmadelphia so Marcus could take a teaching position at the Galax Institute, a small (unaccredited) institution of higher learning that focuses its curriculum on the “pseudosciences” (though, of course, that’s not how they refer to their subjects). What Marcus doesn’t know is all the evidence he’s chronicled over his career about paranormal events throughout history, has actually been fairy events throughout history.
His work will sometimes bring him dangerously close to finding out the truth about fairies and Hazel will have to scramble to throw him off Cosmo and Wanda’s sparkly trail. Unlike Mr. Crocker of the original series, however, Marcus’ continual near misses on finding out about the existence of fairies doesn’t come from a nefarious or selfish place, but an altruistic love of history and the truth. Marcus isn’t trying to steal anyone’s fairies; he’s just devoted to learning. Doesn’t mean we can have him in on the secret though! There are still Da Rules after all!
Marcus sees his daughter as being very special and even important to the world. While. Angela tries to analyze Hazel as an adult, Marcus hopes Hazel will become a leader in his field, often sharing newspaper clippings with her featuring unusual sightings and unexplained phenomena. He even sometimes does activities and exercises with her he hopes might encourage any possible latent supernatural talents within her, like telekinesis or mind-reading.
Antony Wells
Black, 18 years old
Hazel’s brother, Antony, is a smart, cool kid who’s going places. He’s an All-American, 4.0 track star. He also plays the oboe and rides a dirt bike. What doesn’t he do?! Antony is beyond smart and carries a quiet confidence – truly the mellowest of his family members. He can hold court on any topic from politics, to anime, to music theory. He is very protective of his younger sister and would do absolutely anything for her. He’s always been like a combination best friend/third parent to Hazel, but now that he’s off to college, he’s finding his way and making a new life separate from his oddball family.
We won’t meet Antony for a while – since his absence was the catalyst to Hazel needing Cosmo and Wanda, we can’t just bring the kid home for visits all the time. At the beginning of the series, he will only be present as an unseen living legend, which we’ll have some fun with by teasing the audience with only tiny glimpses – always out of frame, out of focus, present only in stories Hazel tells friends or in Angela and Marcus bragging about his college progress. Antony is a dream-come-true big brother, and he is sorely missed by Hazel. We all wish we had an Antony. We’ll meet him someday, but until then, the legend of Antony’s greatness will grow and grow.
Dale Dimmadome (Returning Character)
White, 40s
Dale is the long-lost son of Doug Dimmadome– billionaire, real estate tycoon, and owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome. When we last saw Dale, he was barefoot, in tattered clothes, and working in a sweatshop underneath Vicky’s lemonade stand.
Dale is now the tall, brooding heir to the Dimmadome fortune, and CEO of Dimmadome Gl0bal, the largest tech company in the world. Whereas his father was a haughty businessman clad in all white and a 10-gallon hat, Dale is a socially awkward genius, with slicked hair and a thirst for the next revolutionary tech breakthrough. The only thing bigger than Dale’s staunch demeanor is the chip on his shoulder – which is somewhat understandable, after being abandoned by his wealthy father for so many years.
Bit by bit, Dale will factor in as an adult antagonist to Hazel, Cosmo, and Wanda. Hazel’s wishes will sometimes leave a mark on the world, and Dale’s obsession with breaking new tech ground will have him take notice of some of these things, eventually making him a threat to Fairy World. But for now, he’s just an emotionally distant dad setting a bad example for his son, who will be Hazel’s first main antagonist.
Devin “Dev” Dimmadome
White, 10 years old
Dale Dimmadome’s son and frequent antagonist to Hazel (as stated above). Dev is in the same class as Hazel, giving her a front row seat to Dev’s raging sense of entitlement. Coming from money and seeing how his dad often operates “above the rules” as founder and CEO of his corporation, Dimmadome Gl0bal, Dev mimics that behavior at school – even going as far as having lunch delivered to class so he doesn’t have to walk to the cafeteria where the “peasants” eat.
Dev is smart as a whip and has fully embraced the need for technology, just like his father. His two drone babysitters, Au Pair 1 and Au Pair 2 accompany him wherever he goes and cater to his every beck and call (almost like a Siri or Alexa, but on the go!). On the inside though, he’s a lonely child yearning for his father’s attention. Somewhat like the wealthy Remy Buxaplenty of the original series, but with layers.
Hazel and Dev Dimmadome start as antagonists, but as he gets lonelier over the course of the season, he softens and grows
Season One Arc: Part 1 - Episodes 1-10
Most of Season One will focus on Hazel’s growth and her episodic adventures with Cosmo and Wanda. Some serialization will come into play with her antagonist Dev, as the two go from enemies to friends. The Season One, Part One finale, however, will introduce Dev’s dad, Dale Dimmadome, as a more serious antagonist, when Hazel appears in his data as a consumer anomaly, the only kid who isn’t addicted to his new app because she doesn’t need to buy things, she has fairy godparents granting her every wish! And Dale’s bad behavior in the finale will finally tip Dev into full needy child mode, one who is granted his very own godparent: a fully grown POOF (now Periwinkle a.k.a. Peri), Cosmo and Wanda’s son!
Season One Arc: Part 2 - Episodes 11-20
Hazel’s fun, episodic adventures with Cosmo and Wanda continue. Meanwhile, Peri struggles with how to be a good godparent to Dev, and Dale continues to research Hazel, eventually coming to learn about magic and fairies. Convinced it would make him the richest person who ever lived (imagine being able to use magic to sell people things!), he sets his sights on conquering Fairy World, with the help of classic FOP villains, the Pixies! In our Season One, Part Two finale, it’ll be up to Hazel, Cosmo, and Wanda to save the day!

2023.03.23 20:14 Smurphilicious Old Holly example color legend
The Adem call me Maedre. Which, depending on how it’s spoken, can mean “The Flame,” “The Thunder,” or “The Broken Tree.”
“The Flame” is obvious if you’ve ever seen me. I have red hair, bright.
“I thought I was imagining it before,” Denna said, looking up at me. “But your eyes really do change color. Normally they’re bright green with a ring of gold around the inside....”
Those are Kvothe's primary physical attributes. Green eyes with a gold ring around the inside, bright red hair.
Now Old Holly
The Lady sang. She sang Old Holly. She said to him. She said her words. She said.
Old Holly bent and he became a man. He was both, and it was good.
Old Holly bent his boughs again, and brought a spear, its wood of living green. Its blade as bright as berry blood. This he drove into the shadow thing, and held it to the earth, and watched it howl and burn and die, and this was good.
Now here's my attempt at a color
legend connecting the dots, and explaining why Kvothe is so important. Kvothe is meant to be like Menda, "son of himself".
In Old Holly, he bent his boughs and "shaped" two previous spears.
The Lady sang, new holly bent and it became a spear, and it was good.
Old Holly struck the wolves and pinned them to the earth. He bent his boughs and brought another spear. They bit at him, and that was neither. He clutched the men bent into birds, and pulled at them, and tore them all apart.
So there were two arrows that were already shot into the future, like "plague ships sent to harbor". But were they though? The first struck down the wolves and pinned them to the earth, seven things kept beneath her black dress.
The second one "tore the birds apart"
Then Aleph spoke their long names and they were wreathed in a white fire. The fire danced along their wings and they became swift. The fire flickered in their eyes and they saw into the deepest hearts of men. The fire filled their mouths and they sang songs of power. Then the fire settled on their foreheads like silver stars and they became at once righteous and wise and terrible to behold. Then the fire consumed them and they were gone forever from mortal sight.
But only the last spear has the wood of living green, blade bright as berry blood. Kvothe.
Some more background on the significance of the other colors.
Green is the most difficult to 'show' someone. It's the Adem, sandy hair and pale blue eyes, the poetry, the sacred tree. But no singing. I don't know how else to show that. Edit: It's 'Knowing'!! the Lethani, knowing. Hell yeah
Pale blue is sight, Seeing. Skarpi's diamond blue eyes, like the pale blue of the Cthaeh's willow blossom's.
The first thing I saw on entering the Half-Mast was Skarpi. He was sitting on a tall stool at the bar, an old man with eyes like diamonds and the body of a driftwood scarecrow... He turned those diamond-blue eyes on me and I stammered. His bright eyes looked deep into me, as if I were a book that he could read.
Blue is Twilight, changing eyes like Felurian and Bast
Bast’s arm stiffened and his eyes clenched shut in a grimace of pain. When he reopened them they were solid blue, the color of deep water or the darkening sky.
As he spoke, Bast’s eyes grew paler, until they were the pure blue of a clear noontime sky.
"Bright" is gold/yellow, like the circles in Kvothe's eyes, Auri's hair, or Ordal's
Ordal, the youngest of them all, who had never seen a thing die, stood bravely before Aleph, her golden hair bright with ribbon.
Berries/Blood/Flame is usually bright as well, they go hand in hand. Golden hair bright with ribbon means strawberry blonde, gold with red. It works the other way as well
The red-haired man didn’t flinch or curse, just scowled angrily down at his hand as a bead of blood welled up, bright as a berry.
The other significant story element we see red and gold paired together are the colors of the Calanthis. Red and Gold, like the Maer's flits. His flits mind you, not his colors. The Maer's colors are sapphire and ivory. Blue and white, pale blue
“To your grace’s health,” I said, and drank a sip. I made a face and added a spoon of sugar, stirred, and drained the rest of it with the Maer watching me. His eyes were calm, clever, and too knowing to be wholly good.
Old Holly's colors are Red and Gold. These were the sides of the creation war, red and gold at war with blue and white. Old Holly represents a Calanthis King. Just follow the colors and their traits to trace the genealogy.
“Using words to talk of words is like using a pencil to draw a picture of itself, on itself. Impossible. Confusing. Frustrating.” He lifted his hands high above his head as if stretching for the sky. “But there are other ways to understanding!” he shouted, laughing like a child. He threw both arms to the cloudless arch of sky above us, still laughing. “Look!” he shouted tilting his head back. “Blue! Blue! Blue!”

2023.03.23 19:48 MjolnirPants Jerry and the Apocalypse: Part 55
Part 54 Gary Johnson, Sleepy and Therefore Grumpy. And Armed. Always Armed. It was Radar's whining that woke him up this time. He'd been having trouble sleeping for the past few nights, ever since his two proteges went off in search of blood, leaving behind a maimed god and a metric shit-ton of panic.
He gently lifted Chris' arm from his waist and slid out of the bed, padding on bare feet over to where his daughter, Natalie, slept. Assuring himself that she was fine, he pulled on a pair of sweat pants and stepped into his boots, not bothering to lace them up. Then he walked outside, Radar sticking close to him, still whining.
Once the door of his extra-dimensional 'tent' had closed behind him, Gary knelt down to embrace the whining mass of tentacles, bathed in black smoke. He found the body at the center, wrapping his arms around the thick rib cage and letting Radar's many tongues seek out flesh to lick.
"What's wrong, boy?" he asked. Radar continued to whine and lick him frantically. Gary recognized it as self-soothing behavior. Something was upsetting his chthonic, tentacled hound.
"Radar," he said sharply, getting the beast's attention. "What is it?" he asked. Radar was a smart creature, smarter than a dog, in any case. Gary honestly believe that he understood most of what was said to him, if not all of it.
Radar reluctantly pulled out of Gary's embrace and bounded away, stopping after a few feet to turn about a dozen eyestalks back to focus on Gary. Gary followed.
Radar led him to Sookie's tent. Gary knocked, gently at first, hoping everything was all right. Radar whined some more, sending forth a couple of tentacles that ended in dog-like noses to sniff at the door.
It opened after a second to reveal Ningur, who gawked at him and Radar. "Hi, uh, come in, Sookie's not doing well..."
Gary heard another voice from behind her, pleading, "
Please open the door, Sookie!" He stepped in. "What's happening?"
Ningur shrugged, her wings flexing slightly and her tail flicking around like that of an agitated cat. "I don't know. We were doing gay shit and then Sookie got upset and locked herself in the shower and Mot's trying to get her out but Sookie won't open the door and Mot's afraid to break the glass because she thinks it might hurt Sookie."
Gary listened. "Gay shit?" he asked. Ningur nodded. "That's what Sookie called it. We were licking each other's-" Gary cut her off with a raised hand. "Got it."
He stepped around Ningur and took in the scene. Sookie, like many others, had made changes to her 'tent', and the main room was now an L-shape. Posters, of the movies and television shows Sookie loved, as well as those she produced, including
The Legend of Jimmy, bedecked the walls, hemming in display cases full of dildos that ranged from the mundane to the bizarre.
He stepped forward to see around the corner, and found Mot, nude and sitting with her back to a clear glass door that was currently fogged over, head in her hands and frustration evident in her posture.
"What happened?" Gary asked again. Mot looked up at him and he saw relief wash over her. She stood and stepped right up to him, speaking quietly.
"I'm so glad you're here. The three of us were, like, fooling around when Sookie just started crying and ran into the shower. I don't know what she's doing in there, but I'm afraid for her. I thought about breaking the door, but after losing my divinity while I was in a manifestation, I'm mortal, and I know she won't heal from wounds made by a mortal."
"Huh," Gary said. "I don't know if that'd work. You gotta be trying to hurt her in order to do any real damage. But I bet I know what she's doing in there."
Mot winced. "Shit-tits," she muttered. "This is why I'm glad you're here. Ningur's a sweet thing, but she's kinda useless in an emergency..."
"Ayup," Gary said, moving past her. He raised a fist and shattered the glass of the door with a hard rap. It collapsed into a mass of tiny pebbles, like safety glass, to reveal a cloud of steam that bellowed out into the room. He stepped over the pile of glass and his eyes focused on Sookie.
She was sitting against one wall with her knees up, under the water which had been turned all the way hot. Both hands were hidden behind her legs, buried in her crotch, and she was making a soft mewling sound. Gary could see the muscles in her forearms working. He stepped over and grabbed her by both arms, hoisting her up. As he did, he could see the claws buried deep in her flesh. He gave her a little shake, knocking them free, then tossed her over one shoulder and turned to carry her out.
"Turn the water off, will ya?" he asked Mot as he walked to the intersection of the two wings of the room, where Sookie's large, four-poster bed stood. He gently set her down on the edge of it, then took a seat next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder.
Sookie dropped a hand on her own leg and clawed furrows into it that began to heal immediately. Gary grabbed both of her small hands in one of his large mitts and held tight to them. "That's enough," he said. When she didn't respond, he took his arm off her shoulders and grabbed her chin, turning her face to his.
"Talk to me, babe'," he said.
Sookie blinked at him, then shook her head and began to sob. Gary let go of her chin, hugging her to him again. Mot approached and sat on her other side. Gary flashed her a look, then made a beckoning gesture with his head, so Mot put her own arm around Sookie and leaned into her.
"Whatever's wrong," Gary said. "You ain't got to handle it alone. All you gotta do is talk to us, you hear me?"
He let her cry for a bit longer as Mot simply hugged her and Ningur sat on the floor in front, her face twisted in confusion and sympathy. She cried for several minutes before her sobs began to relent.
"I miss her," she said after a while.
"Inanna?" Gary asked, and Sookie nodded.
"She used to come visit me," she said, sniffling and wiping at her cheeks. "Back when she first woke up. She'd tell me about Jerry and Sarisa, and I'd tell her about things that happened while she was asleep. She was the first one to... To speak to me, to be nice to me, after I left Nibiru. I had spent centuries there, thinking she'd hate me, but when I finally left... She was the only friend I had. I met Ishantee later, and we were never all that close until after she woke up, a few years ago. But Inanna was... She was my best friend."
"I know, darlin'," Gary said. "She was a beautiful lady, and I ain't just talking about looks."
"You probably think I'm a basketcase," Sookie said ruefully. Gary shook his head.
"Naw, girl."
He let her hands go and lifted her chin. "I
know y'are," he added with a wink. Sookie snorted, coughed, and then laughed.
"Don't make fun of me," she complained.
Gary poked her gently in the ribs, making her squirm. "Sorry babe, that's one request I can't do."
Sookie giggled, then leaned her head against him. "Thank you, Gary."
"Ain't nothing. It were Radar what let me know something was off."
Radar, who'd been laying on the floor, watching them with all of his eyestalks, perked up at the mention of his name. Sookie held out her arms to him, and he bounded over to wrap tentacles around her legs and whine softly as she rubbed him.
"Thank you, Radar," she said.
She turned her head, "And thank you, too, Mot."
"I just can't handle all the emotional stuff," Mot said with feigned disinterest. "Gotta put an end to it."
Sookie poked her in turn, eliciting a girlish squeal. Gary glanced at Ningur, who still seemed a little confused (which he was beginning to suspect was par for the course with this one), but was smiling a small, uncertain smile.
"I'm sorry I ruined our fun," Sookie said to both of the other women. "It's fine," Mot said.
"Was it something I did?" Ningur asked.
"No, sweetie, not at all," Sookie told her. "It was that council, today. I sat in on it and it... It worried me."
"Council?" Gary asked. He hadn't been aware of any such thing. The war was progressing, and at a decent clip, under the established strategy. The human military was steadily encroaching on the primordial's territory, pushing back the zombies and spidercrabs, as they'd come to be known. They were even able to take out a primordial in a pinch, using the M1028 rounds and multiple tanks. Gary almost winced at the memory of watching it; four tanks firing what amounted to enormous shotgun shells at a mass of writhing tentacles fifty times the size of one of the tanks, and the ensuing mess that caused.
Things were getting harder, as predicted, and their progress was slowing as each primordial became more difficult to kill, but Jane was still predicting a victory in about two weeks, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Though she had warned that 'unforeseen circumstances' remained a possibility, as her domain did not give her insight into what the primordials themselves knew. What lay beyond the yawning abyss of ginungagap was a mystery.
So there'd been no need for any planning sessions, so far. They couldn't plan for what they couldn't know, and they didn't need to plan any more for what they did no.
Sookie nodded. "They were discussing Jerry."
"Shit," Gary swore. He knew something like this was bound to happen, eventually. After Tysrane had shown up, missing a hand and incapable of regrowing it, it was inevitable that the gods would get their panties in a wad.
"So what happened?" he asked.
Sookie sucked in a deep breath and massaged her thighs for a moment. "It was pretty bad. They met to discuss what happened to Tysrane, and what to do about Jerry.
"They're scared, Gary. All of them, even Yarm. And Jane... When they asked, she told them everything. That Jerry has the ability to kill a god, now. You know, death has never been a real worry to us. What happened to Ultris..." She stopped speaking for a moment to tamp down on the old wound, still ragged and bleeding, so many thousands of years later. After a moment, she went on.
"What happened to Ultris, it took four of them, with Astoram dipping into some dark, dark magic. There was a confluence as well... I don't know all of it, and even explaining what I do know would take hours, but it's not something that anyone, even Sarisa, thought could be done again. It was a fluke, a freak occurrence. Loki and Eloham were punished harshly. I think Loki's still serving his punishment. Anansi got off because he tried to stop it at the end, but Astoram... All the gods turned from him. I think, if there was a way to kill him, they'd have done it. It was a really big deal.
"And now, Jerry has woven an enchantment that will let him do it any time he wants. They're
terrified." Gary nodded. He had expected something like this. "I take it they're factionalizing?"
Sookie nodded back. "Yes. Yarm's the voice of one camp, saying that Jerry's the only one who could be trusted with this power, and we should let him get his revenge, and then just talk to him. Tysrane and a few others are arguing that we need to go find him and convince him to give it up. They're pointing out Sarisa's plan, saying that if we let him go through with this, Jerry might become that guy she's trying to make him into."
"Is that it?" Gary asked. Sookie's eyes darkened. "No," she whispered. She took a deep breath.
"The largest group... Including Vintress and Azzazu... They're arguing that he needs to be stopped right now, permanently. That he should be killed, so he can never make another godslayer."
"Sheeeit," Gary drawled slowly.
"Not fucking cool," Mot agreed.
"I don't know what to do, guys," Sookie said, her voice betraying her rising emotions.
"I do," Gary announced. All eyes turned to him.
"We're gonna go find him. We're gonna help him put Sarisa in the dirt, not for payback, but because she needs to be gone for good. She's too fuckin' dangerous. Then we're gonna come back here, win this fucking war, and square off with them assholes what want to kill my buddy, and tell them in no uncertain terms that if they come for him, they come for all of us. And if they do come for him anyways, well... I can't imagine he'd be stingy with the god killin' spells."
"I wouldn't be too sure about that," Mot said. Gary quirked an eyebrow at her.
"I'm not, like, the goddess of psychology or anything, and I realize I don't know him as well as you guys do, but I'm positive that he's carrying around a metric shit-ton of guilt, dude. If I had to guess, I'd say that he doesn't give a shit what happens to him after he kills Sarisa."
Gary winced. He wanted to tell Mot to shut her damn mouth, but he couldn't deny the truth in her words.
"Doesn't matter," he said after a moment's reflection. "Jerry's a damn fine listener, and with all of us reminding him that losing him would hurt us as much as losing Inanna did, he'll come to his senses."
"You sure?"
Gary nodded. He wasn't, actually. He couldn't be. But he had learned long ago that doubts are only useful when they help you refine your plans, and they can get you killed if you dwell on them too much. He had a course of action in front of him. It may not be the best possible one, but it was a good one. It was better to do something dumb decisively than to do nothing at all.
"I'm positive." He stood, Radar untangling himself from Sookie as he did. "I'm gonna go tell Chris, then get ready. I'll be back in ten, and then we're gonna go find Jerry."
"Leave the shirt off," Mot called as he left. He turned, a question in his eyes. "You just got really nice pecs, dude," Mot said with a little grin. Gary bounced his pecs, one after the other, making all three of the women laugh.
Good, he thought as he went back to his 'tent'. Good morale helps everything run smoother.
He found Chris awake, sitting up in the bed. Their eyes met, and Gary knew that Chris knew. Both were old soldiers, who knew what it meant to deploy. Chris stood and followed him back outside, so as not to wake Natalie.
"We're going after Jerry. There's a faction of the gods who want to kill him, now that he has the ability to kill them. We're gonna help him zero Sarisa and then confront that bunch. Yarm's speaking for a smaller group that'll stand with us, and Tysrane of all people, is in the middle."
"Motherfucker," Chris muttered. "Bunch of fucking drama queens, these gods."
"Yeah, well, I kinda get it. Ain't none of them ever had to worry about dying before. They don't really know what courage means."
Chris' lip curled in a sneer. Gary understood. For most warriors, a coward was the worst thing a person could be. Gary was a bit more forgiving, having seen the cowardice in himself that he had overcome, and having seen how courage can form and grow. Jerry himself proved that cowardice was not a permanent state. That kid had pissed his pants and cried like a baby, the first time they got into trouble, and now here he was, off to murder a goddess, virtually by himself.
Chris sighed deeply after a moment. "I'll take care of Nat," he said. "You take care of Jerry."
Gary nodded. "I'mma go say goodbye. We're leaving right away."
Chris came with him and they gently awakened their daughter. "What?" she asked in a drowsy voice when they got her sitting up.
"Poppy's got to go handle some things," Gary told her gently. "I don't know how long I'll be gone for, but I didn't want to leave without saying goodbye." She reached out her arms for his neck and he embraced her.
"I love you, Poppy," she said. "I love you too, Punkin," he said.
"Bring me a present when you come back," she muttered as she laid back down and closed her eyes. Both men smiled down at her and tried to stop their hearts from bursting.
She began to snore lightly again, so Chris walked Gary out. Once outside, Gary summoned his battle rattle from hammerspace, dismissing his current outfit of sweatpants and unlaced boots.
"You take care," Chris said as they hugged each other. Their lips came together for a long moment. When they pulled apart, he added. "Wreck shit."
Gary nodded. "I love you," he said.
"I love you, too," Chris said. They kissed again, and then it was done. Both of them knew these goodbyes. Neither wanted to draw it out, to make it too painful. Gary left to take care of one other task before he left.
Yarm answered on the first knock. "Gary," he said. "Come on in, I need to speak to you."
"Brekka in there?" Gary asked. Yarm nodded. "And the boys. With all that's happening, they didn't really want their space from us."
"I'd rather just the two of us chat," Gary said. "As much as I love your family, this is... Well, talking shop, you know?" Yarm nodded and stepped out, pulling the door shut behind him.
"I need to tell you about the council," Yarm began, but he stopped at the look on Gary's face.
"Sookie told me," Gary said.
"Did she tell you that most of the gods want to kill him?" Yarm asked. Gary nodded. "I'm leaving, to go help him. I trust Jerry, and I consider him a dear friend. I ain't leaving him to stand alone."
Yarm nodded, but he looked pained. "Gary, Jerry is getting
very powerful. He has eleven wells, and, frankly, he's as smart as or smarter than Sarisa. And he's cunning as shit, on top of that. You know what that means."
Garry blew out a breath. "Cunning is scarier than smart, every fuckin' day," he said.
"It is," Yarm agreed. "The gods are terrified, Gary. They've never had a threat like this out there. Some of them stand with me, and some, like Tysrane -bless his objective heart- are maintaining neutrality. But most are scared, and that's making them angry."
"They all know about Sarisa's plan. They know about Jerry's visions, because Jane can't lie, and doesn't seem inclined to keep it to herself."
"Where does she stand?"
Yarm shrugged and shook his head. "I have no fucking clue. Nobody does. She's staying removed from the argument, answering everyone's questions."
"Well, hopefully with her being still a little green and all, she won't be as much a threat as Sarisa."
Yarm chuffed. "I'm as green as she is."
"Yeah, but you're so big," Gary said. He eyed Yarm with wide eyes until he cracked and they both chuckled.
"Anyways, I wanted to let you know where I'm off to. Try to run this thing in our direction, back here. I'm gonna help Jerry, but I'm also gonna make sure he has to see a little reason."
"Fuck that noise," Yarm said. "Jerry's my best friend. I'm coming with you. Besides, Saerdwin had a talk with Kratos, and he came over to our side. Between the two of them, they'd do a better job leading this faction than I would. Honestly, Saerdwin alone would do a better job, still, but they're kind of a pair."
"Well, go kiss your ole lady and hug your kids then," Gary said. "We're off to war."
----
Gary and Yarm approached Sookie's 'tent' and slowed down warily when they saw the crowd in front. As they paced closer, Gary began to make out faces. Chris was there, as was Ishantee, Ninhursag, Glorfinel and Anansi. Sookie and Mot were in the group.
Everyone was armed and armored.
Sookie stepped forward. "They're all coming," she said. Gary gawked at them. Chris met his eyes. "Brekka and Esmeralda just showed up and told me to go with you. I didn't question it."
Ishantee spoke. "Inanna was a rival for so long, but the last few weeks, we..." She sniffed and wiped her eye. "We became close. And that meant a lot to me."
"Jerry and I might not have been close, but I know better than to bet against him," Anansi said mildly.
"She stole children from me," Ninhursag growled. Gary met Glorfinel's eyes. He shrugged. "I'm with Anansi, really. This seems like the winning play, to me."
Heavy footsteps sounded from behind him, and Gary turned to find Kratos stomping up, dressed in thick leather armor and swinging an enormous warhammer as if it weighed nothing.
"Why we just standing around? I thought we were gonna go smash Sarisa?" he asked, frowning in confusion.

2023.03.23 18:55 ttabb14 Avoid Wing bikes
Hi all — wish I discovered this sub before buying, but wanted to share a negative experience with Wing to help others avoid similar.
On arrival, gears were misaligned, brakes were loose, rear tail light broken. Not a huge issue, I can fix that and Wing promptly sent a replacement light. For a day or two, I was ecstatic, absolutely changed my morning commute. I loved the bike but it turned sour quickly.
Within days, break squeaking is so loud it's drawing attention from people on the street. I can't get it to stop for more than a couple days no matter what I do. seems they don't like to hold their position when properly aligned. Wing support suggests I bed the brakes. Doesn't help.
The new light arrives and it doesn't fit - turns out the hole for the screw which fastens in the light is on the wrong location of the bike body, off by about 2mm. Meaning if I screw in the light it will break. Wing support suggests this is not a mistake and that placement ensures the light is properly tightly sealed but some customers choose to use a metal file to make the hole larger and ensure the screw fits. To me, clear manufacturing quality error.
Days later, horn stops working reliably. Battery life is 1/3 what I expected, and support shared their distance estimates area with a 140lb on assist level 1 out of 5 (a pretty unrealistic use case for most riders).
Days later, throttle stops workign reliably. Support suggests sending a replacement throttle, horn, internal computer, and rear light and expects me to install and troubleshoot.
At this point I've requested a return and refund multiple times and am largely ignored. Who could possibly trust a bike with such severe quality issues? To me, clear safety danger. Nonetheless, support is unwilling to suggest any option other than replacing the parts. In the end, I feel I wasted $1k+ that I should have spent on almost any other bike.
Just sharing this in hopes others can benefit.

2023.03.23 18:36 datemycat This creature/cryptid has shown up 3 times in my dreams in the past week.
I did my best to try and draw from memory:
https://imgur.com/a/VJFy7Tp I am a heavy sleeper and I vividly dream nearly every night. For the past week, this odd creature has shown up in my dreams 3 times. Usually in the dreams I'm not doing anything major, for example last night I dreamed about being in a pet store and saw this creature in a glass cage. I walked up to the cage and said "you again!?" And that's kind of all I remember as far as interacting with it.
What it looks like: The size of a medium dog, humanoid in shape besides the legs. Its legs and backside are covered in feathers. It's torso is human and nude. It's face is usually humanoid, with a mane of feathers. The nose always has butterfly wings coming out of it. When the creature presents as I'm assuming a male, it has a mask over its face but when female, there is no mask? Sometimes it switches between freely so it can be whatever I guess. The one from last night was a male at first and then before I spoke, it was female.
As far as I go, I have been pretty stressed the past week. My kitten was neutered last week and ended up with an infection so that's been heavy on my plate. I also had a head cold yesterday but generally I'm just a busy mom with a routine who works nights in a restaurant. I don't do drugs or smoke weed and I'll have a few drinks on weekends. I don't know if any of that is needed but I'm so curious where this creature came from and what could it possibly mean?
Any suggestions?

Daily Trivia:
The planet-hopping and futuristic aspects of the Armored Trooper Votoms settings were purposely de-emphasized in this show in order to better evoke the filmic quality and classic hollywood feel that both Takeyuki Kanda and Ryosuke Takahashi wanted to bring to the work.
Staff Highlight
Shinji Takamatsu - Storyboards and Episode Direction
A director, screenwriter, animation director, and storyboard artist best known for his work on mecha anime, particularly the Braves franchise. Takamatsu graduated from Tochigi Prefectural Utsunomiya Higashi High School and shortly thereafter dropped out of Hosei University. He was hired on by Studio Sunrise as a production assistant in 1983 and immediately was put to work under on the production of Armored Trooper Votoms, and was transferred to the production of Round Vernian Vifam upon Votoms’ completion. After working closely with Yoshiyuki Tomino on cultural setting research for Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, he was promoted to episode director for episode thirty-one of the show, and under Tomino’s tutelage came to direct episodes and draw storyboards for Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ as well. His first roles as chief director were on SD Gundam shorts in 1989, and his first credit directing a TV anime was on 1993s Brave Express Might Gaine. He left Sunrise in 1998 and joined Studio Gallop for some time before becoming a freelancer. Some of his director credits include Brave Police J-Decker, Brave of Gold Goldran, School Rumble, Gintama, Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, Robihachi, Grand Blue, Sora no Manimani, New Mobile Report Gundam Wing, and After War Gundam X.
Voice Actor Highlight
Norio Wakamoto - voice of Golfy
A voice actor, and actor with a long and storied career who is affiliated with the voice acting agency Sigma Seven. He graduated from Waseda University’s Faculty of Law and went on to work at the Nakano Police Academy of the Metropolitan Police Department before transferring to the Metropolitan Police Department Riot Police, where he worked for two years and was present for several student activism protests. He retired from police work and became a voice actor after attending Ryo Kurosawa’s Dubbing Classroom. His debut anime role was as Anago in Sazae-san. Wakamoto is characterized by a voice quality that has both astringency and sharpness, is often tasked with voicing villains, uses Noh and Kabuki —which he enjoyed as a hobby— as a reference for his acting, and really enjoys ad-libbing when allowed for. Among his most notable roles are Randou Hiro in Makyou Densetsu Acrobunch, Oskar von Reuenthal in Legend of The Galactic Heroes, Captain Kim Yongbi in Ashita no Joe 2, Chiyochichi in Azumanga Daioh, Chappii Eda in Be-bop Highschool, McCoy in Burn Up, Charles Zi Britannia in Code Geass: Lelouch of The Rebellion, Vicious in Cowboy Bebop, Juzo Hasegawa in Cyber City Uedo 808, Cell in the Dragon Ball franchise, Black Shadow in F-Zero Falcon Densetsu, The Narrator in Aura Battler Dunbine, Katakuriko Matsudaira in the Gintama franchise, Kōichirō Ōta in Aim for the Top! 2023.03.23 14:29 Bumpelina Men and magic
We know that wizards exist in the Winx club universe, wizards can be evil and good. Some wizards use staffs (Saladin and Nabu) but we have also seen the wizards of the black circle use their ring. It seems like wizards use staffs to either channel their powers much like fairies transform to channel their powers or to enhance their powers by having the staffs be enchanted with magic or connected to a power source. The black circle don't use staffs, this may be because they use their dark ring to channel their power. And if their dark ring serves the same purpose as staffs do for other wizards like Nabu for example that would mean that without his staff Nabu would be powerless which doesn't seem to be the case. This would indicate that there is multiple types of wizards like there are multiple types of fairies. Maybe there are earth wizards like there are earth fairies. I would say that wizards are basically male fairies and dark wizards are male witches. I would like to now mention an argument I've seen supporting the existence of male fairies. The argument I'm talking about is a picture of what seems to be a man with wings but in all honesty wings are often used as accessories so this really doesn't prove anything. I don't think there are male fairies and I don't think there should be. Simply since there are wizards which makes having male fairies unnecessary. I do think that wizards should have had their own school and played a bigger part in the show. But the main reason I'm against male fairies is the fact that I like the idea of fairies being a girl only thing, it might sound silly and not as progressive as the internet would like me to be. And also wizards could transform the same way fairies do since there is no mention of them not being able to. This completely eliminates the need for male fairies and saves me the uncomfortable feeling in my stomach.

2023.03.23 13:19 420-CDXX Got back into drawing after taking a break for 6 years. Decided to redraw a motif I did in 2017. Stippling of a moth with skull design on its wings.
2023.03.23 12:39 muser_777 Letters from Donetsk - 7. "Someone somewhere is failing to know – because since the day that Russia invaded, nothing makes sense but madness, which is why you have to shout it down, because mad isn’t what you are but what you go."
Last night I watched videos on my phone in the darkness of my room – of soldiers celebrating with the people of Kherson in the electric lightlessness of the city’s liberated streets. Russia had knocked out the power station as they pulled out, but some joy you don’t need to see to sense or even hear – it’s like the bubbling swirl of a thousand ghostly dancers rising up over the tapping of actual feet.
Some say Kherson’s liberation is the greatest victory since Russia withdrew from Kyiv, but honestly as greatness goes it might be better, as no one has it at the back of their mind that Kherson was just a costly feint. For the people of the region’s capital, the restoration of their city to Ukraine was also a victory of clarity – not just in knowing what awaits their lives and their families but of making any rational sense. The illegal annexation into Russia just a month before, which Putin promised was forever, saw a bank of fog draw thick over their futures, one in which soldiers removed people from their houses, and after the people were gone, their things. The darkness as they were dancing with the UAF who had freed them would give way to a morning that was bright.
I felt like celebrating myself, buoyed not just by the news of the victory but by seeing what it meant. It didn’t matter there was no one around to have a drink with or even a drink around to have, the important thing was my mood was lifted. And with my jubilance I went to bed.
Something woke me a couple of hours later. A knock in the house rather than an explosion but it was the explosions in the distance that had coloured-in my dream – a vivid domestic theatre between myself and an expressive mother of a woman I still barely knew. Her heating system was a giant copper assemblage that was rattling and steaming and grumbling (the booms), and the theatre was us just fussing over whether it was going to blow. I guess this is how an inner need to celebrate with people manifests in dreams during war. Girlfriends, mothers and precarious heating systems in large American homes.
I lay awake for a while after that, and listened to the barrage in the east. Russia has wanted to take Bakhmut for months, but now doing so was essential for saving face. Their news channels were leading with accounts of a Luhanskian village being taken, which was nothing short of mockery when everyone knew about the Kherson city retreat. By some reports as many as 800 Russians were falling on the eastern front every day. After the biro-covered calendar of Russian atrocities leading up to this, there is a general lack of sympathy online, but no matter how many times I see an image of a grinder making sausage meat, I sour every time. When death helps you win the war, each swing of the scythe becomes a tweet. And the only way you can get your head through the cheering is by seeing dead men as wheat.
John Barleycorn.
I sometimes make the mistake of remembering Russians as people. I try to fathom how this can possibly be happening in a country populated by the people I knew – I imagine them overhearing chatter in support of the war – two men at a table in a cafe, or in a shop beneath a TV screen. Maybe a laugh. Or a reference to sausage meat. But I can’t imagine them saying nothing to those men. Not the people I knew. Or perhaps I never really knew them, or perhaps they don’t know the truth. Someone somewhere is failing to know – because since the day that Russia invaded, nothing makes sense but madness, which is why you have to shout it down, because mad isn’t what you are but what you go.
I recalled specifically Nika, a partner of mine from yore who waited posh restaurants in St Petersburg, including a favourite of Dmitry Mdvedev’s wife. Nika would know what this war was really, she would know what this was all about. But as soon as I imagined her placing plates beneath references to what was happening here, to expressions of support, I am left with the thought she must have slung those plates and left, job, home and port – no way could Nika play silent servant for long with that forever in her ear. Many of my old students have left – Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan. One was stopped at the border but seems confident he can hide his way out of the draft. A fugitive in his own country at just twenty four years. That’s the only way I can rationalise this madness, by imagining the sane have already left.
Then who is it that is actually manning the front? Dying by the hundreds every day? Prisoners make up a large part, I hear – clemency for their crimes in exchange for meat. But there is a chance that among their number are men I have actually met. My former students had gotten the education they needed for wings, but there were others I have come across whose wings were closely clipped. Nika went every couple of weeks to an orphanage out by the Finnish Gulf. One guy there she had formed a bond with, a fourteen year old kid. I went with her once and met him. A good lad. Quiet. Strong. The kind you could depend on in a fight. With the sounds of artillery in the distance, I calculated that today he’d be coming up to twenty nine. And shuddered when I realised that orphans above anyone would surely have been called up first – after the state had clothed and fed them their entire childhoods, you can bet they would come for repayment the moment there was a need. But what bothered me even more than that this lad could be on the front now – someone I basically knew – was that he could have gone there willingly. That he could have believed the lies that were fed to him because those that were lying never gave him the learning he needed to discern the truth.
But just as this thought knotted me so tightly that I actually began to shout – in my bed, behind a chipboard window, with artillery in the distance – I remembered Nika and her friendship with the lad, and the thought brought me back to calm. Of course they would be friends to this day, and of course she would have told him, taught him, how to look at the war and those who peddled it, have insisted he got away. And who better to get out of institutional madness than a guy who had spent his life in an orphanage? Maybe he had gotten away. And I realised just then how fucking important those visits of Nika’s were for that kid, fifteen years ago. A seed of sanity in a world of mad. Saved the lad’s soul she did, nevermind his life. To remember that she would then go to work each day, and feed gourmet Italian food to the former president and his wife. There is something so fucked up about how upside down that all is, so poetically wrong that it’s about right.

2023.03.23 12:37 RiDragon I've been searching for my old friend for 6 years and I can't stop
Why did you have to change your username so many times dude? I only lost contact with you a few years before I was able to break away and think of my friends again, ... and you were gone. All your accounts abandoned. Every trail in followed ended with me getting no further. I've heard at least from a mutual friend who also lost contact with you that you were alive and happy as of two years ago (fuck! Why didn't I think of finding this person then??? Ugh!! I'm so stupid.) But they didn't have your current number. I've been searching so long, every few years I'll get a bit obsessed with it before yet again giving up. Do you even remember me? That's what's crushing me so much. I kept my accounts the same, you could of talked to me. Maybe we weren't as close as we thought. Idk. I just want to hear from you again. Please. Even if you don't want to even be my friend again let me at least get these stupid things and apologies I have to say off my chest so I stop feeling like my guts are being dragged to hell. It hurts so bad.
I don't want to become an obsessive stalker. I just can't find you and I need to accept it. I already messaged every old account, tried to follow leads and look up and cross reference names. All I need is a nudge from Fate that maybe you'll check one of those again and see it. Just a prod from The Universe, A small whispered suggestion from a God that's listening, a Butterflies wings flapping, anything. All I need is that little push.
I don't want to go into an obsessive stalker mode and like, cross reference every highschool in your state with your graduation date or something... like part of me wants to in desperation. I just need to give up. You don't want to see me anyway.
I don't want to get to into it but I'm so sorry I didn't talk to you for those couple years, there were reasons but I should of overcame them. I tried to at the beginning, but since they got ignored on Skype and Tumblr I just assumed you didn't wanna hear from me. I had no idea you were still active on another website and talking about how lonely you were. I should of been there. I should of been there! You were always there for me! And I abandoned you. You were the main reason I even wanted to draw and create. I haven't drawn much until two years ago, and I've regressed a lot. I looked up to your art so much. And you loved my characters and I loved yours. You made me want to keep going. You were my light in a really dark time. My only light in a void. ... My Starlight. (ugh, how cheesy. Shut up Ri.). My soul sibling. I thought it was fate that we met, we were such a perfect friend matchup. We synched up on so many levels.
Writing it all down. Admitting to all this. It's so stupid, so pathetic. I even started just sending random messages to accounts hoping MAYBE they were you. It got my Tumblr shadow banned from it thinking I was a bot , so now my account mighg be permanently locked away from comments messages and being seen in tags. So stupid. I know you'll never read this. I wish you would so bad.
... I miss you so much Sas. (This is not an identifying name. It's the first username I knew my friend under that hasn't been used in a Long time.)
I hope you're happy at least. I don't even know what your chosen name or pronouns are anymore. Good friend i.was.
Thanks for reading if anyone read this. Getting it down helps a bit. And hey. Maybe it'll spread enough for them to see it (probably not. I don't get that kind of.luck.)
Sorry for any mistakes. I wrote from my heart when I'm high but it doesn't always come out great. time for a depression nap and my brain teasing me with dreams that I'll see a new message from you when I wake up.

2023.03.23 12:17 browneorum NoP: Offspring. Chapter 27. Simbelmynë.
u/SpacePaladin15's universe, my story/characters.
---
Memory transcription subject: Yotun, son of Laenar and Arrut.
Date [standardised human time]: May 5th, 2120 (16 years, 4 months before the invasion of the gojid Cradle).
Yotun runs in the night. He is running from the forest, from the chittering, clacking dead things that skitter across his trail. A phantom moon hangs above, a dark star shining shadows. It’s non-light leaves pools of moonlight in the gloom. The only true light, orange and warm, ebbs distantly from his home, barely visible downhill between the trees. He just needs to reach it… His pursuers make themselves known with shrill shrieks; young brynn, flesh sloughing from their blackening bones. Many are missing large chunks of flesh, braying exaltedly as their viscera drag across the ground. The corpses press close, clipping at his heels, hooves clattering together as they stagger after him. They herd around him, giggling and squealing, trying to change his course. “It’s not safe,” one whispers. “Yessssss,” the others chorus. “P-please!” he begs them. “Leave me alone!” “Not safe!” They chant, their voices screeching like teeth on empty plates. “Not safe not safe not safe not safe!” They fill his sight as his feet pound the ground, their slacken faces and rolling tongues a grotesque portrait. Then he is running through the vineyards and up the cinderblock steps in three dream strides, the orange glow as bright and total as the dawn. He bursts through the back door. His parents are standing at the dining table, conferring in whispers as they peer beneath a massive sheet across it. They look up sharply at his hasty entrance. “Oh,” his mother beams, lowering the cloth. “There you are.” “Someone must be hungry!” his father laughs, the man smiling in a way he never seems to. Honestly. He is home, Yotun realises as his heart settles. He must be safe. “C’mon dearest,” his mother says, “You’re just in time for dinner.” He sits in his chair, the wood rough like bark. “What’re we having?” he asks, looking down at the covered meal. “Your favourite!” she squeals, pulling the cloth back. The table is covered with a fine sample of their vineyards and crops. Brightly coloured fruit, ripe and tender, paired with well roasted vegetables and seasoned tubers. Surely no other farmhands on the Cradle eats so well! But at the centre of the table sits the young brynn, blinking at them with dim animal eyes, its legs tucked tight beneath it. His mother moves to his left, and hands him a knife. Yotun looks uncertainly at his father, but the man just rubs his paws together, a big grin on his face. “Go on, tuck in!” his mother says. Yotun gawps at her. “N-no… I don’t want to…” “You’ll eat it,” his father says sternly. “We put a lot of work into this.” “No, I… p-please…” Something was not right. “You won’t get your vegetables till you’ve had your brynn!” his mother scolds him. He sits there, open mouthed. Grumbling, Arrut snatches the knife from him. “Here,” he says, “I’ll get you started.” In a swift, impossibly strong stroke, he cuts through the animal’s neck, decapitating it as if it were a stuffed toy. Blood splatters across table, soaking into the tablecloth; the head lands like a grim delicacy in the salad bowl. Yotun screams, covering his eyes. He slides to the floor, the tree giving up all pretence of being a chair. Without looking he knows he’s back in the forest, the smell of sap strong in his nose. A presence, felt but unseen, leans close. “Are you scared?” she whispers, the words a breath on his throat. Yotun opens his mouth to speak but only a shrill wheezing comes out.
A rumbling sound woke Yotun with a start. He sat at the bus stop, fields of anuana stretching away on the other side of the road like a rolling avalanche. Down the road, the bus was approaching. Pulling his journal from his pack, he quickly took some notes on his dream before they faded. He had not been sure why Rylett was getting him to do so at first, all it did was reminded him of his dread, the terrible depth of his nightly terrors. But the more he did so, the more he saw in them. For one the smell might be more visceral, in another the colours more vivid. Some he would go most of the night without recalling any detail, save one sour note. Some days, some blessed morns, he woke not remembering a thing.
A shadowy moon cloaked in light… The transport shuddered to a stop, the blue paint chipping above the wheels. This far from the town of Yuret, the autonomous vehicle only had one occupant. The doors opened with a pneumatic hiss, Callio’s small pack bouncing as she skipped down the steps. The girl smiled as she saw him.
“Did you fall asleep?” she asked at once, watching him yawn and stretch. The bus started up again, emitting a low hum as it continued on its route.
“No…” he said, pawing an eye.
“Liar,” she said, sitting on the bench beside him. That woke him up. “So,” she said, swinging her legs. “You snuck out after all.”
“Couldn’t let you get lost on your own, hm?” he grinned, shaking his head. “If our parents knew…”
“Yotun,” she laughed, rolling her eyes as she jumped up happily. “That’s what the sneaking is for!” Callio put her paws on her hips.
“Ready?” she giggled. Yotun could not supress his grin as he stood.
“C’mon,” he chuckled, “it’s a long walk!”
The main road was not far from his family’s property, connecting Bendara on the western coast and Yuret to the southeast. Calling it the ‘main road’ was also something of a misnomer, as most traffic between the two settlements was airborne. Few, if any, would see the two teenagers wandering off into the woods.
The tour of the Brackwood had been more fun than he had expected, but Callio had become obsessed. Their time between classes was mostly spent talking about and comparing notes and drawings on what they had found on their respective borders of the territory. Callio had even brought in a dylia, a long, thin, green insectoid in a jar to show him. Rylett had not been impressed when she saw, even if she told them to keep it to themselves.
But that had not stopped them, and Callio still wanted to see more. In particular, she wanted to see the kuru again, those strange ghostly creatures.
“C’mon,” she had whined. “It’d take me
so long to walk out there from my house. Couldn’t we go together? Your house is right there.” And he could not exactly say no to her, could he? She was his only
real friend, and was it so bad if he wanted to spend some time with her?
Shit. She’s sure plucked my quills enough to convince me of this, he admitted.
Winter was starting to wane at last, spring urging the forest to wake. This was a good time for his family, the vineyards starting to cultivate again. More to grow meant more work for his parents, which suited Yotun’s school break fine. It also meant that the dominar had shot up, and they had to cut through the roiling fields of sun-gold stems. A straight line turned into a meander, turned into a chase, the pair giggling like all children should, running beneath an open sky. Breathless, they exited the field on the forest side to find their path writ into the crop, as though a brynn had stampeded through. Not wanting to dawdle lest neighbour Maggit arrive, they set off into the Brackwood, roguish smiles on their faces.
Ahead, the snow had retreated back into icy caps on the mountains. All that meltwater would be turning the seas to a broil; even here in the foothills, where it was clear and sunny, there was still a wetness to the soil. The trees had started to sense springs coy fingers, drawing out the first hints of green and blue stems from renewed branches.
Even in dead things, nature finds new life, Yotun reflected.
The pair made good time; Callio’s enthusiasm dragged him most of the way. They stopped to rest on his overhang before midday, where he had come to draw in solitude but had found then lost a friend. He had not come back since, but it was as he had left it all those months ago. The outstretch of rock with its log for a bench, a crowd of its living fellows standing cautiously nearby as if goading one of their number to lift its roots and plummet from on high. The wind whistled but carried no voice.
“Look,” Yotun said breathily, pointing downhill to the slab of grey amongst its rows of vines. “You can see my house from here.” He strained his eyes along the peaks to the southeast, then down into the plains. “And there’s Yuret.” he added, noting the peaks of silver towers spread between circular pastures of green. Callio was still admiring the property, watching the regular mechanical motions of the little drones spraying pesticides. From this distance they looked like insects themselves.
“Your dad’s still growing his trees?” she asked. Yotun nodded, gesturing to a seemingly barren patch at the forest's edge below them. His father had taken to the idea with a strange zeal.
“Down there.” He laughed. “Don’t know what’s gotten into him.”
“I think it’s nice,” Callio said with a smirk. “Don’t you?”
“I guess.” Yotun mumbled. “I just don’t see it lasting. He only cares about the vineyards, anything that doesn’t add to that…” He shrugged. “What about your dad? Isn’t he gonna be upset that you’ve run off out here?” She spun away from him, wandering up to the trees.
“He worries too much. I told him I was going into town.” With one last look down at his home, he moseyed after her.
So brazen, he noted, the thought tickling him. Callio glanced at him as he joined her, her brown doe eyes narrowing with a smirk on her lips.
“What?” she asked coyly, tossing her head and folding her arms. “Do you disapprove?”
“Since when do you need my approval?” he laughed. “It’s just… out of character.”
“Oh,” she said, leaning forward with a scandalised expression. “And what exactly is my ‘character’?” Yotun chuckled.
“Little light in the tunnel, not one to work against the grain.” He smiled impishly. “What would they say of Miss Perfect stomping off into the woods with the likes of me?” Her smirk was fixed even when she rolled her eyes.
“Perfect, eh? Well would Miss Perfect do this?” she hooted, giving him a sharp shove. He fell solidly onto his rump, the damp forest floor wetting his fur. Callio’s snorting snigger at his shocked expression warmed him against the chill.
“Oh, that’s it!” he giggled, picking up a patch of sodden muck and flinging it at her with a hefty
splat! She gasped, the girl gaping down at the brown mud coating her soft cream-coloured fur. For a moment, he thought he had ruined everything. Then her gasp became a giggle, became a cackle. He started laughing too, falling onto his back.
“Aha… You idiot!” she wheezed as she trotted over to him.
“Ah… serves you right,” he tittered wiping the dirt from himself, and taking her offered paw. It felt firm and sure in his own. Callio looked down at her mucky fur again.
“Papa’s gonna kill me,” she chuckled trying to work it out with her claws.
“Sorry,” Yotun winced.
Such a silly thing to do. He ran a claw through a rough patch, gently teasing the dirt out. His paw drifted up the blot, and he felt Callio’s breath hitch as his paw moved across her chest. He froze, realising what he had absently done. Their eyes met, and he wondered if his own exposed his feelings so clearly.
She stepped away, abashedly, working up to the treeline again. Yotun’s brain was doing somersaults, whilst simultaneously thinking about soap for some reason.
“Woah,” Callio said looking up at the hollow tree, “that’s neat”. She stuck her head inside. “Ha! It’s super echoey.” Her voice boomed. “Listen to that! Helloooo! Hellllooooo!” There was a moment's silence. “Hey, come look at this…”
“What?” he murmured, bending down into the crevice beside her. She pointed to deep gouges on the dead interior.
“Claw marks,” she mumbled, following the trail up. “Something climbed up here.”
Or someone… he ruminated, running his thumb across a deep scratch.
She was always one step ahead, ever out of reach. “You alright?” Callio asked.
“Yeah, you just… reminded me of someone.”
“Someone good, I hope.”
They were very close, sitting in that hollow. He nodded uphill. “C’mon.”
“More climbing?!” she huffed. “I’m so tired!”
“It’ll be worth it,” he said. “I promise.”
During late spring and summer, the foliage grew too dense to pass through, blocking passage into the rest of the estate. But in the earliest weeks of spring the cut path into the Brackwood was clear enough to gain egress. He had only come out this far once or twice since he had first found that hidden trail, all those years ago.
The path, which started near his family’s vineyards, stretched up into a pass between two low mountains. Dormant trees, too high and too cold for spring, and any awlets nesting there were all who noted their passing. The higher they climbed, the dearer the drop to each side. Even the trees seemed to fall away as they walked, loose soil giving way to steep summits of stone. They were panting hard as they reached the apex, but a wall of white sound was all they could hear. Yotun wore a grin as they crested the rise.
Before them stretched the long descent into the west. Curving to the north, in a misty surge was the source of the white noise. The waterfall, pale and bright, flowed from a narrow opening in the solid granite; at least, it seemed narrow from this distance. In actuality the bus Callio had taken could probably be propelled out of that chute. It must have been carved out from tens of millions of years of thaw, tens of millions of springs. The water fell in a roar —crying liberation from the cold— into a massive lake at its foot, a tributary of the larger rivers in the forest. Though they could not see it, Yotun knew the river would be strong now, made all the harsher by Ki-yu’s rage. Down there, between the greening trees, the water was white and frothing with the last of winter’s bite.
“Wow,” Callio gasped, her fatigue vanishing. Her brown eyes followed the sharp folds of the mountains westward, the hidden slopes and valleys too few knew. “Okay… that was worth it.”
“Told you so,” he tittered breathily. “See that?” he told her, pointing to the most western and modest peak. “That’s where Turin found me when I wandered out here.” It was smaller than he had thought, more of a large hill than the mountain he supposed. He recalled surprisingly little from his march across the forest. His strongest memory was that he had to keep moving, and never go home.
“You did all that?” she glanced down into the valley. Yotun flexed his jaw, watching how the blue of the sky met with the silver mountains.
“Yeah, well… I couldn’t sleep.” Some little bellboys dove from a high point beside the waterfall, dancing through the mist to wash. Callio took his paw beside him.
“Thank you, Yotun.”
“It’s okay,” he said, looking up to gauge the sun’s passage. “We should probably head back soon.”
“Oh, couldn’t we go a little further?” she asked.
“I don’t know much more beyond this point,” he shrugged. She smiled sunnily at him.
“Pleaaase…” she whined.
“Well,” he sighed, as though he had not thought this far ahead. “There is one more thing. It’s not far.”
They followed the trail further along the ridge, the wind sweeping up to play with their fur. Eventually, a forest path cut off from the main trail, threading between the trees. The meagre offering of allfurs tried to form a thin canopy, their bristling green cones instead littering the forest floor. Brush and bushes also grew dense here, meaning they could see the sky far better than their feet. Still, the path was easier than he had expected and had clearly seen some recent use.
Callio did not seem to mind the detour, nor the difficult terrain.
I could be leading her anywhere, and still, she follows me. She trusts me, he realised. It should not have come as a surprise, but something about that fact was a minor revelation.
Just when he was worried he had led them astray, Yotun stepped out of the treeline and into the sheltered clearing. A fresh crop of pale white blossoms with golden-yellow hearts had come up, a living echo of snow’s thaw. Beneath their green stems the ground was soft and rolling, warmed ever so gently by the sun’s rays. A log had fallen through the dell and across the thin trickling stream that cut through the idyllic little spot. Tiny insects flittered about on soft wings, dancing with and chasing each other between the petals. It was beautiful.
Callio almost pushed past him, stopping in her tracks. She spent a few seconds processing the image before her, then peered at him like he had just produced a hovercraft out of thin air. She laughed, covering her mouth with a paw, and stepped forward into the clearing. The bugs flew up at her passing, buzzing about her as she stepped through the petals.
“They’re so pretty!” she remarked, bending down to touch a crèche of white flowers growing in a mound.
“Evermind,” he told her. “Mother grows some by the window.”
“Oh!” she gasped. “Like the poem?”
“Poem?” He sat against the log.
“You know the one,” she laughed, tilting her head.
“
Leaf-maker, night-blind, Candle in a jar. For but a taste of evermind, I wander, lone, afar.”
With a sheepish smile, he bent down and plucked up a flower.
“Here,” he said, handing her the stem. “Now you won’t have to wander anywhere.” His own words sent something wriggling in his stomach, afraid of what he was saying.
“Silly boy,” Callio laughed but accepted the gift. She sat in the sun beside him.
“S-sorry,” he said clumsily. “That was really weird. Everyone thinks I’m weird.”
“You
are weird, you silly boy!” she said sweetly. “It’s what I like about you.” Yotun smiled bashfully, words forgotten to the soaring feeling in his chest.
“I, uh… I do approve… by the way.” he said in hushed tones. Her eyes making his heart thunder. “O-of this… of you…” Callio twiddled the flower between her digits, glancing from its petals to him and back again. Then, she rested her head on his shoulder.
“F-for what it’s worth,” she breathed, “I think you’re perfect too.”
That moment, the two of them sitting alone, felt like he had dozed off in the sun with the promise of a night of summer dreams. If he shut his eyes he would fall asleep and never wake up and be happier for it. But instead, his eyes alighted on the gentle trickling stream. There was a sliver of swirling blue in its clear water. The wind changed, and Callio coughed.
“What’s that smell?” she murmured. A moment later the sickly odour touched his nose too. It was too familiar.
“N-no…” he said weakly. “N-not here…” Yotun jumped down from the log, the trickle of the stream cool between his toes. Callio called out behind him, but he was in a daze.
It can’t be… please don’t be… He followed the brook to the crest of the clearing, the blue tide thickening all the while. The boy found what he did not hope to find, breathing heavily in shock. Callio ran up behind him, then gasped, a rapid whimpering sound.
Tied to the roots of the tree was the putrid corpse of a vyrryn. It was so old as to have started rotting, parts of the blackening flesh long since stripped away. He staggered backward.
Rolling eyes, slacken tongue, a hole where the neck should be… “Y-Yotun…” Callio whispered. “I- uh…” He took a nervous step forward.
“Oh, but…” Yotun gasped. “L-look…”
“I don’t want to look!” Callio hissed. “I want to go!”
“B-but the legs! They’ve been cut away!”
“S-someone d-did this…” Callio shuddered, pointing with a claw to the rope. “Yotun… Please, I think we should go!”
“Y-yeah,” he said, tendrils of terror tightening around his heart. “C’mon.” Without thinking, he took her paw in his and turned to go back the way they had come. They stopped.
Something massive was standing across the stream. Its four stocky legs were tipped with sharp claws. Its short-haired, fuzzy brown body was long, its frame too large for its gaunt flesh. But it was the eyes that embristled him at once; intense, golden eyes.
Predator! his mind screamed.
“B-behind me!” Yotun hollered. The urge to run was overwhelming, but where to run to? The teenagers scampered backward looking about for a path through the trees, but the forest pressed too tight, the terrain too uneven. If it had killed and caught a vyrryn Yotun had no doubt this creature would run them down if they tried to flee. Instead, he held onto Callio tightly. The predator padded after them in a lethargic, almost casual stride, pacing back and forth across the clearing. Callio squealed as her legs touched the corpse of the vyrryn.
It wants the body! Yotun’s panicking mind insisted.
“I-it w-wants the meat!” he hissed. Together, they moved sideways around the clearing. The creature’s long tail swished back and forth as it regarded them. Its broad nose took in the air, a wide purple tongue clearing a tooth. It loped forward, its paws thick and heavy, spreading its weight as it clambered over to the dead thing. It sniffed about it deeply, the teenagers moving back further. But their movement recaptured its attention, and it turned its massive head back to them.
“Wh-what’s it doing?” Callio whimpered.
“I-it’s more interested in us,” he gasped. Every slow step backward they took was mirrored by the predator.
What do I do?! Where can we go?! They were rapidly being backed further and further into the treeline. All his nightmares seemed to swirl about him; the feeling of being trapped, hunted, and the feeling of broken bodies and shattered jaws.
I have to save her… He squeezed Callio’s paw.
“G-get ready to run,” he gulped.
“Wh-wh-?!” He did not have any time to waste, lest his courage fail. He threw his arms out, baring his flat teeth as wide as he could.
“Find help.
Go!” he shouted, stepping fiercely toward the predator. A short moment later he heard her beating a hasty retreat. “
Yaaaaaaa!” he yelled, swinging his arms about. “
Raaaaaaaaa!” It ignored him, tracking Callio’s passing. He stepped between them. Yelling from the top of his lungs.
“
Aaaaaaaaaaaa!”
It stalled for a moment and blinked at him. Then it growled.
His bravery faltered, and he took a half-step backward. That was enough. It jumped forward, slashing at his throat. Yotun cringed away, yelping as its claws left vicious cuts through his forearm. Instinctively he rolled onto his belly, his spines extended into a ball of spikes. He shook in terror as he felt its hot breath on him, a moment later whimpering, snivelling as it battered him again. The creature made a snarling sound, irritated by his spines. It hit him again, hard enough to knock the wind from him, the shock making him unroll. He looked up into the eyes of death.
“
H-hey!” he heard a thin voice yell as a rock came sailing into the animal’s flank. It spun about with a hiss. Callio stood there, brazen and afraid.
“Run!” he gasped. The girl turned in terror to flee, but in an instant it was on her. She was pinned, wild-eyed and screaming, on her back, unable to roll over and splay her spines. The sound seemed to fade, replaced by a thundering droning, a belt of pressure so tight around his skull he thought it had burst open. Yotun collapsed as he tried to lift himself, finding his left arm to be shredded, blue flesh peaking between his fur. His body felt leaden, unable to move. Time slowed as the monster bore down on Callio, her frantic, shrieking inaudible. The girl’s silent scream was choked as its great jaws clamped about her throat. The air was pressed from his lungs; nothing seemed to be happening, save that moment. Then there was a rumble, like distant thunder, more felt than heard. The animal recoiled as its side caught fire, dropping Callio limply to the dirt. A man with a rifle strode through the brush, the lever ratcheting again as he fired on the predator. Hissing furiously, the monster bolted for the trees, a round of sizzling plasma reducing an ear to a burned stump. In two bounds it was lost amongst the leaves, white fire chasing after it.
Yotun’s eyes drifted to his friend, her body lay twitching where she had been dropped. His arm flooded with lancing pain he crawled to her, pleading that she was alright. But in reaching her he found there a despair usually reserved for his nightmares.
Blue blood was staining her cream-coloured fur, droplets on the white flowers around her. Her paws curled slowly as she held them against her chest. She wore a strange, perplexed expression like she was trying to solve some particularly stimulating puzzle. Great holes punctured her neck, her head hanging limply to the body. There was a grip on his shoulder as he was firmly pushed away, the big brown man’s paws moving frantically through his pack. He was speaking to him, but Yotun only heard the pounding in his ears.
I know him, don’t I? a part of him recalled. The man produced a medical kit, retrieving a bundle of gauze and pressing it to the wounds. It turned blue at once.
Callio was wincing, tears welling in her eyes as she tried to say something, something he could not hear. But he could see. All he could do was see. He wished he had never seen at all.
The big man was shaking him, and Yotun gasped in shock as awareness returned in a wall of sound.
“Yotun!” Braq barked at him, guiding his paw to the bandage. “Keep pressure here!” He did so at once, his stomach spinning. Callio made a muted sobbing sound, as his paw pressed down hard, her blood sticky on his palm. His left arm was afire with agony, but he ignored it; it was nothing compared to what he could see.
“I-it’s o-okay,” he told her. “I-I’ve got you.”
Oh no… no, please, no… Braq spun around again, reloading the rifle as quickly as he could. He paced around them in a firm careful stride. “H-help me!” Yotun pleaded weakly, not to anyone in particular. Braq winced.
“I am,” he said, pacing nervously. Yotun sat there dumbly, Callio making weak sounds as he pressed against her open throat. It had all gone wrong.
“Wh-what w-was-!”
“A roht,” Braq murmured, pain etched across his face. “I’m so sorry lad.” There was a deep resonant growl between the trees, making Braq bristle as he re-primed the weapon.
“W-won’t it go away?!”
“No, not when there’s food to be had.” He peered back at them. “Don’t worry, helps on the way.” Yotun gawped at him, a look of terror and blame.
“Y-you said th-there weren’t any m-monsters in the woods!” Yotun gasped.
“I lied,” Braq whispered. A split-second later there was a crash through the bush, Braq raising his weapon swiftly. He fired blindly at his target, and there was a thudding sound. It was silent. The moment stretched out, marked only by Callio’s rasping breath against his palm. Braq stepped forward into the scrub, and swung the gun left and right as he moved in slow cautious steps. He disappeared from sight between the trees.
Suddenly he cried out in fright, falling onto his back into the clearing. The monster had pounced on him, the big man struggling beneath it with the gun in its jaws. Yellow teeth scratched at the metal. Abruptly a shadow exploded out of the bushes nearby, leaping at the predator in long bounding strides. The blur hit the roht across the back, lodging a knife into it as it went, the force of the collision dragging the predator from its prey. Rolling to its feet, the big brown beast hissed at its attacker, batting at it with a massive paw. The other leaped away, its lithe sinuous form more agile than any gojid. Its long snout sat before two dark forward-facing eyes, and its lips were drawn back in a hideous snarl. The two predators circled one another, growling and snapping as their tails hung low. The roht easily outweighed the newcomer two to one, but it was also clearly slower.
Yotun looked down at the girl in his arms. She was not looking at the fight for their lives, instead her soft brown eyes were searching his face as though he held some answer to a special question. Her eyelids started to droop, as though too heavy to bear.
No! “Callio?” he gasped. “C-can… p-please stay awake…” The predators nearby were diving and dancing around one another, the roht trying to rush in and push down the dark reptile. He pressed his palm harder to his friend’s throat, causing her to whine, tears filling her eyes. “Ju-just hold on, w-we’ll g-get you out o-of here!” Braq had rejoined the fray, the rifle discharging superheated bolts at the monster. Callio’s paw rubbed against Yotun’s cheek, brushing away the tears he did not feel.
“Silly boy…” she gargled, that light smirk on her bloody lips.
“I n-need to tell you something…”
“Tell…” she managed weakly but could say no more. Her eyes slid shut, her face went slack, and she died in his arms.
“Wh-?” he mumbled, peaking beneath the bandage. “Callio?” He put his head on hers; he did not know why. “Wake up. W-we’ve got to get home…” he told her. “Please w-wake up.”
It’s a dream, a bad dream for my journal. “Wake up!” he all but yelled, shaking her broken body. “No…”
Yotun was vaguely aware that Braq had stopped firing, the rifle landing near him as the roht ripped it from the man’s grasp. Braq dove away as it leapt for him again, the shadow taking the opportunity to slash at its haunches. This drew a pained yelp from it, distracting the monster as it whirled to howl at the other predator. Seemingly emboldened, the dark creature attacked with renewed vigour, feinting one way only to pounce from another. Before him Braq snatched up the rifle, hastily slotting rounds into the chamber as the two monsters fought.
“Watch it girl!” he called out as the roht stood up to throw itself heavily at the black reptile.
Girl? some part of Yotun’s grief and fear-stricken brain pondered. Whatever ‘she’ was she heeded his warning, rolling beneath and scrambling away from the beast. The roht was starting to lather from its wounds, panting and snarling fiercely. Sensing this, the shadow closed in, biting and slashing at it before darting away. Then she was too close for a moment too long, and the yellow teeth snapped shut around her tail. With a wrenching toss of its shaggy head, the roht flung the lesser predator across the clearing. With a yelp and a sickening crunch, her middle wrapped around a tree trunk.
“NO!” Braq yelled out as she fell solidly to the ground. She had stopped moving. The roht turned its yellow eyes on the gojids. It charged them, and Yotun sat there like a fiirit on the freeway. Braq tried to fire the rifle, but the mechanism jammed with a hefty clunk.
Death then. With a terrific yell, Braq threw himself over them both, his broad spikey back flaring. The roht slashed at him, and both barked out in pain. It threw its head low under his spines, grabbing the ecologist by the ankle and dragging him away from the kids.
“Ah-yah!” Braq kicked savagely with his other foot, the claws jabbing at the predator’s face and freeing himself. For a brief moment, the man managed to wrestle his way on top of the creature, wrapping his muscular arms under its head and elbowing its skull repeatedly. But then the monster threw him from itself and pounced on him, Braq barely getting his paws up in time to hold back his demise. But it was a futile maneuverer, and Yotun could see the fear in his eyes the roht’s strength slowly overpowered him.
It killed her, and that dark thing, Yotun thought absently.
Soon it’ll kill me, and everything will be alright. His only regret was that Braq would have to die as well.
There was a hollering yell, and then it was off him, the man sucking in air in agony and relief against the ground.
“Ki-yu…” Braq wheezed, trembling as he tried to force himself up.
You see that bright one? a half-remembered voice flashed through Yotun’s mind.
The shadow was straddling the roht in the middle of the clearing, screeching at the top of her lungs as she slashed with her claws at its throat. Blue blood was being flung in all directions, the roht’s legs kicking desperately beneath her as it tried to buck the other predator off itself. Its paws scraped at her flanks, but the darkling batted the blows aside. The great beast tried to bite at the reptile’s throat, but she recoiled, and wrapping her clawed hands around the snout snapped it shut. Ki-yu let out a savage bellowing howl before she dragged the still-kicking predator's muzzle and head into her jaws. Yotun tried to look away, but he found he could not. The roht let out a strange bleating sound as great sharp teeth dug through hide and skull and eye and brain. With a sickening
Ca-CRUNCH the predator's head shattered, and it stopped crying out. Stopped kicking. It did not even twitch.
Yotun realised he was screaming when his lungs ran out of air. The predator sat astride the roht with its teeth still lodged in the blue mess that was once a head. It was not looking at him, instead, it seemed to be panting. It wore a distant expression on its face, its dark eyes unfocused.
With his unmauled arm, Yotun reached for the rifle. The movement seemed to awake the creature, and it shook its mouth free of the shattered skull with short jerking motions. He pulled it up, heavy and clumsy in his shaking paw. The creature just watched him, its bloodied claws stretched out over its kill. He was trying to figure out how to shoot the thing when Braq limped over and pulled the rifle forcefully from him. He fell to his knees before them, his paws moving desperately over Callio’s corpse.
“Shit! Oh, no, oh
shit shit shit!” he muttered to himself. He smelt of blood and sweat.
“She’s dead.” Yotun told him, as simply as if he had asked for the weather. The big man looked him so close and so deep in the eyes, Yotun could see himself reflected in his pupils. Braq hung his head, his heavy paw gripping Yotun’s shoulder. The boy looked up to see that the voice in the forest had ambled over to them. The woodwaif wheezed as she breathed, a strained expression on her long face as she clutched at her ribs. She dragged her tail along the ground, its middle broken where the roht had bitten it. Blue blood covered her, a trickle of red leaking from one nostril. Her dark scales glistened in the sunlight, her form supple and strong.
She’s beautiful, he thought distantly as she towered over him.
“Please,” he whispered, “just kill me.”

“
Simbelmynë. Ever has it grown the tombs of my forbears. Now it shall cover the grave of my son. Alas that these evil days should be mine. The young perish and the old linger; that I should live to see the last days of my house… No parent should have to bury their child…”

Memory transcript: Tarlim, Venlil civilian. Date: [Standardized human time] September 1st, 2136 Sharnet and I stood back as Jacob barged into the room. As much as we wanted to help, I doubted my size would be a calming presence. The screeching had stopped by the time we reached the door, but that didn’t automatically mean good news.
I stood beside the door after Jacob barged in. It sounded confused inside. Part of me wanted to enter, just be part of it, but I feared my size would make things worse. It would make any Venlil fearful. I could hear Jacob asking if anything was wrong. And the squawking is back!
That’s definitely a krakotl. I look back at Sharnet. She also had her ears pressed against her head, but she was doing her best not to run. I let my tail brush against her back to help calm her. I-
A bipedal figure sprinted out of the room and ran into me. The collision made me step back in surprise, but my fur helped cushion the impact. I looked down to see a human wearing a visor covering the upper half of his face.
“Oh…” he began to stammer, “I-I-I’m sorry! Please, I need t-”
His voice fell as his head tilted up, following my towering form. He said nothing.
Well, it’s not screaming! I’ll take that as a good sign! I flicked my ears in greeting. “Hello.”
He stepped back. “JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH YOU’RE HUGE!”
Loud! I stepped back as well. Was that fear? I don’t-
“Look at you!” The man continued, his arms thrusting and waving towards me, “You could touch the ceiling! I mean, Wow! What a day…!”
Okay. I guess this isn’t fear. I see Jacob lean his helmet out the door. “Y’all okay out here, mister half-mask?”
“Okay? Look at this!” He just spreads out his arms and barks a laugh. I see Sharnet flinch as he does. The exposed lower half of his face must be triggering bad memories. “I get marched through an alien city, in a herd! Like actual sheep! Then some talking turkey rams into the window and attacks us, and then this… this VenBig! This.. this is THE Venlil Prime!”
I cock my head at him making the same joke as Jacob before doubling down with yet another joke, this one calling me important.
This is so weird. I can see even Sharnet perk up in slight confusion at the near overwhelming positivity of the reaction!
“You, Venmaximus,” the human continued, “you must be SO popular with the ladies!”
The ladies? “They must just fawn all over when they’re in season! You could probably
drown from their affections!?Are they even able to handle you? If it’s proportional, it must be a LOT to handle! Those women must be particularly adventurous to ride THAT beast!”
Ride? I, uh-oh.
Oh. “You would have to be so careful! You could end up shooting them off like a-“
“Hey!”
Oh thank the gods, Jacob. “Yankee! Mask!”
That seemed to get the man’s attention. He touched his head mask. “Huh! What? Mask?”
Jacob holds out a reflective piece of something. “The lower half!” he exclaims, pointing to his own helmet.
The partially masked man looked at him, tilting his head. He seemed confused. "Why... Oh.
Oh! Right! Sorry, Sorry.” He grabs the lower half of the visor from Jacob and brings it to place. “Those two got used to my mouth pretty quickl-UHHHHH, Seeing it, I mean! We always ate together."
Jacob nods. “Well, Ah’m glad y’all are…” his voice trailed off as his head swiveled around the hall. I took my focus off the pair to look, and finally started to get nervous. Several other humans and Venlil had come out of their rooms and were staring at us. No, staring at
ME. Okay, a crowd. Full focus of everyone. Fear. Shock. Amazement? Everyone is looking at me in silence.
This is, uhhhh, I don’t… “Alright, Y’all!” Jacob’s yell broke me out of my anxiety, “Show’s over! Ask questions at mealtime! You! Freckles!” He pointed to a human with a multi-pigment face, who lightly recoils upon being called out. “Masks ON out of your room! Oh Lawd, you ain’t alone!” He walked behind me and Sharnet moved to push us. “Raht! In tha room! Lease ‘tall the lookers leave!”
I allowed Jacob to hurry the three of us into the room. I had to duck through the door, as usual. Also as usual, whatever was happening stopped as the three other inhabitants of the room turned to stare at my towering form. Two Venlil and a Krakotol.
That bird looks to be split in half? I heard Jacob closing the door behind us. “Ah apologize fer the-” He coughed and cleared his throat, “
for the intrusion.” He stepped forward and faced the other human. “Name’s Jacob.” He stuck out his gloved hand. “Nice t’ meet y’all.”
The man took his hand and shook it.
It really did seem like a greeting. “Kaeden. The two fluffy ones behind me are Kaabra and Venik. The Bi-color birdy is Vichee.”
Jacob nodded. “Good to meet y’all. Pologies up front for mah drawl. Ah get worse when Ah’m excited.”
“I feel you. I narrowly avoided full Dublin Irish, and Brooklyn Italian, during my rant…” Kaeden gave a nervous laugh and made a few gestures. The translator dubbed those words as… accents? There’s that many? “Very animated when I’m excited.”
“Ha! Knew ya were a Yank!” Jacob walked over to me, his right arm extended at me. “Well, considering how excited you were, I would like to introduce y’all to my exchange partner!
Introduction! I flicked my ears and swayed my tail in the gesture of Venlil greeting. “Hello. My name is Tarlim.” I look at the three other non-human residents of the room. They still look surprised and fearful.
As usual. I lowered my ears.
Focus. Breath Calm. “I know that my size is frightening, so if you need to, please just scream and get it out of your system.”
Venik looks like he's about to say something, but whatever it was got interrupted by the Krakotol Vichee letting out another loud squawk. It looked like it frightened Kaeden by the way he jolted.
So they do feel fear! Showing quick action , he whirled around to grab her beak, snapping it shut. “I’ve heard enough out of you!”
Okay, that was expected. Mostly. The other two Venlil just sit in silence.
What? “Wait, only one of you? Why aren’t you two freaking out?”
Venik straightens up. “I-I know who you are. I… I watched your trial on the streams a few years ago.”
“Trial?” Jacob and Kaeden speak simultaneously.
Oh Speh. I had hoped to tell Jacob my history a bit later. Jacob leans back in surprise. “You never mentioned that. Something sensitive?”
I felt my tail curl around me. It is, but it’s still something that should be known. “It’s easy to look up.” I look down towards Venik. “How… how much do you know?”
“That you fought, and you won! You stood up to the exterminators! You cleared the diagnosis of Predator’s Disease. You proved to everyone that different didn’t mean evil!” Venik said it all in with an air of reverence.
Like I had done something heroic. I let out a whistle in appreciation of his words. This is new. I am used to people being scared or curious, but this? “Well, when you put it like that, it makes me sound brave.”
“You are brave! You’re the closest thing we have to a Hero! It was because of your case that I was allowed to shed my parent’s overprotective isolation. I was allowed to stop hiding, just because I was a runt.” Venik took a step towards me. Kaabra had tears in her eyes as she looked down at her tablet.
What was she looking at? I swayed my tail appreciatively at Venik for his kind words. “I’m glad at least some other good came out of all that.” I took a breath, but something tickled my mind. “I noticed you only mentioned the exterminators. Did you… Did you hear about the…
other group included in my lawsuit?”
Venik flicked his ears, his tail stalling. “Other group? No? I just remember the Exterminators.”
I sighed.
He didn’t know after all. Sharnet brushed her tail against my legs in a comforting gesture. “You don’t know,” I mumbled.
He needs to know. Jacob needs to know. “You know I was wrongly diagnosed with Predator Disease, but you don’t know what that meant. Hardly anyone does.”
Focus. Breathe. Calm. “Do you know what happens to those diagnosed with Predator Disease? Why my freedom required a lawsuit at all?”
“Okay!” Jacob butted in suddenly, drawing all eyes to him. “Sorry to interrupt, but is this something you want me to overhear?”
I looked down at him. He was concerned. He wanted to make sure that this was something he was welcome to know.
Focus. Breathe. Calm. “Yes,” I answered. “This is something you will eventually learn. It’s all on the net, after all.” I turned back to Venik. “Let me tell you about-”
“The correctional facility.”
Who said that? Venik looked over at Kaabra, who’d gone stiff. I followed his example. Her voice was nearly a whisper, filled with terror.
She knew. Vichee, the Krakotl behind her, somehow looked even more terrified than before. A photo was enlarged on her tablet. It showed…me.
THE photo. I was being held up by two pole collars around my neck, each held by an orange-vested Venlil. One White, one Tan.
Mute and Treven. “They’re dead.” I looked back at Jacob. He had stated that as plainly as if he’d said water was wet. “Ah don’t give a damn you call that predatory, they’re dead.”
I noticed Venik’s paws shake with rage, taking in several labored breaths. Kaeden was acting the same.
Were… were they angry on my behalf? While I didn’t quite agree with Jacob’s sentiments, the thought of so many people on my side caused my tail to wag behind me. “I would be lying if I said I would stop you.”
Focus. Breathe. Calm. “That place… It was torture. I almost died many times because of what management had done to me. Purposeful overcrowding on the shock floor. Electric shock settings set too high. Starving me to ‘curb my growth.’ And that’s just the minor stuff.”
Focus. Breathe. Calm. “It got investigated after my lawsuit. The management just cut and run, but they couldn’t hide everything. They said that there were things happening there worthy of only the Arxur.”
Focus…Breathe…Calm. “You call me brave. I…I wouldn't say that. This bravery is just me going forward. It’s…the only way to stay sane.”
The room was silent for a moment as the horror of what I said sank in. Only Sharnet was unsurprised, but she had no reason to be anyways. Venik looked furious, though. His ears were flat against his head and his teeth were barred in thinly-veiled aggression.
But it wasn’t him who stepped forward to speak. It was Kaeden. “Bravery is a choice. You have to choose it, every day. The fact that you’re here now is proof of it. It doesn’t matter the reason. Even if it’s just for survival. You have to
choose to survive. You could have always chosen to surrender, to give up.”
The masked human looked up at me. I could hear the indignation in his voice, suppressed as it was. I focused one of my eyes on him. His tone wasn’t something I’d expect from a predator. It was one that betrayed a knowing beyond empathy.
He had experience. “You’ve dealt with your version of exterminators.” I stated, a whimper crawling from my throat, “You know what I have been through, don’t you?”
He stood firm beneath my gaze. “I do. If I was born one of you, I would have been thrown in there right with you. It’s saddening to see this is how your people deal with those who are…different. I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, if you’ve met any humans other than Jacob, that I’m a little bit… off?” Kaabra, Venik and Vichee all looked at him, wide eyed.
I flicked his ears to signal no. “I have only met Jacob before now.”
“Yeah,” Jacob piped up through his speaker,” Ah wouldn’t say that the Texan in a Blue Spacesuit is a good basis for a “normal” person.”
I heard Kaeden bark out that human laugh.
He sounded… relieved? I hoped that’s what that meant. “Well… to ‘normal’ humans, I stick out like a sore thumb. I have ever since I was a kid. Everyone knew there was something wrong with me but me.”
Sharnet hesitantly stepped out from behind me. She was gripping the fur on her legs with her hands. Anxious, but she’s pushing through it. No false bravado this time, just doing. “Do… Do you w-want to say what happened? T-to talk about it?”
Kaeden nodded.“I don’t mind. It’s history.” He sat down on a nearby chair to begin. “First, it was my friends and neighbors. They knew something was wrong with me. They thought they could help me fix it. Their version of help was jumping me, four on one. ‘Teaching me to fight, defend myself’ They said. Then it was the doctors. They tested me over and over to narrow it down. Kept me isolated for days at a time, stripped nearly naked. My mother put a stop to it.” He fell silent for a moment. A memory must have returned as he spoke.
“Then it was the army. They had to break me down to build me into something new. Then it was the enemy. Using civilians to lure us out into the open, then picking us off as we tried to help. Then it was my own country. They needed a perfect soldier. But what they had was a man. No…” He shook his head, “not a man… a scared kid. So they reshaped me." He gestured to himself.
I looked at him. I didn’t quite understand. “What did they want to make?”
“A monster…” he whispered, gripping his arm tightly.
I looked down at him, tracing my gaze over his form. His stance was anxious. He huddled inside himself. In speaking of the wrongdoings of others with sadness, he seemed to remember his own wrongdoings with shame. He held no pride in the past, and whoever he was then, he must work to never be that again. Like Sharnet.
Like me. “Well,” I stated confidently, “I am glad to see that they failed.”
Kaeden seemed stunned by the confidence in my words. Almost as if it was something he had never considered. Venik and Kaabra nuzzled up to him, their tails wrapping around his legs.
“That’s… Well… heh.” He stammered. He didn’t understand.
It was hard for me to understand when Paly assured me I was good. “I have seen a lot of monsters,” I continued, pointing to the picture still on the pad. “I know how they act. How they hide. I had to, in that place.” He looks back at me. “I can say with certainty, you are no monster.”
I heard a light laugh come from beneath his mask. He tapped the side of it for emphasis. “You haven’t seen me without this yet. I literally look like a horror movie monster!” His barks appear again.
All this about looks. I tried my best to give an unimpressed stare, but I couldn’t stop my tail from flicking in amusement . Still, I stand tall to emphasize my height. I tower over everyone in the room. “Do you truly think that I, after all I have been through, would be in a place to judge somebody on how they
look?”
I notice the bird behind Kaabra perk up a little and then stare down at their two differently colored wings. Venik shifts a bit awkwardly, looking down as well. Kaeden laughed again. It was a genuine, pleased laugh.
Genuine. “No, I suppose not! But seriously. I look like Frankenstein’s Monster! Please tell me you know the reference, Houston.”
“Yes! Though in the book, the monster was made to be beautiful!” A laugh barked from his suit speaker. Kaeden just raised his hands in the air as Jacob continued. “Ah ain’t gonna help someone put themselves down. Ah mean, ya must be doing something right! You got TWO Venlil sticking around! And whatever the bicolor bird is doing. Ah mean, they certainly haven’t run despite all thems squawkin’. Hey,” he turns towards Vichee, “you okay over there?”
The Krakotl flinched at Jacob, yet it seemed more due to his words than his movements. I had to admit they were a sight to see.
I had never seen that kind of pattern before. I had honestly thought Kalek being green was the extent!
“I… I’m different too.” They explained. “And not a single one of you mentioned it, aside from calling me ‘Bi-colored’. But there were no insults there, just a statement of my feather colors”. Vichee said this all quietly, as if they couldn’t believe it.
Kaden nodded. “Alright, to be fair. I wasn’t too concerned with how you looked, when you were
trying to peck a hole in my skull!”
I stared at him. Why was he saying that like it was a good thing? Both Jacob and Sharnet were looking surprised, impressive for Jacob given how his helmet covers everything.
Kaeden raised his hands. “It’s fine now! I mean, my first meeting with this one had her kick me in the ‘nads, dive over a table and wet herself.” Kaabra gave a bleat in shock and started swatting, careful not to use her claws. Vichee, going by their feathers, seems to be barely holding back a laugh.
“Then this guy here,” Kaeden gestures at Venik, “ambushes me,
stabs me then tries to break my arm! I sorted you out right quick though, didn’t I?” It was Venik’s turn to bleat and his whole face turned a dull orange, his ears as well.
“Then
you,” he turned to the Krakotl. “Dive bomb my balcony, perch on my back and try to give me a lobotomy!” He barks out his laugh again. I could help but giggle along with the absurdity as he continued.
“By the time I ran into the walking stormcloud here,” he gestured up towards me, “I thought he was gonna hurl me out a window or something, just to complete the combo. Jesus H. Christ, this has probably been the best week of my life.”
“I-I’m sorry,” Sharnet spoke up, “did you say Venik… stabbed you?”
I perked my ears. That’s right! I had almost missed that!
So Sharnet wasn’t the only one who reacted in such a way. Jacob even turned his helmet towards the other human.
Kaeden took the knife from Venik, making as if to examine it. “Yup. Steady hand too, or paw, I guess. Had I not gotten my arm up in time, it would have been fatal most likely. Gut shot. Not a good way to die, But!” He crossed an arm over his chest then STABBED HIMSELF?? In the ARM?? He moved it away and pointed to his shirt. “See, no damage done! Though I was pretty pissed off for a little while.”
“I th-thought he was… well… um… doing bad things to Kaabra. W-we were childhood friends, and when I saw her walking through the station looking ashamed…” Venik fidgeted.
Sharnet shuffled at the sight, gripping the fur on her legs. “I… I, uh..”
I let my tail brush against her back to calm her, but I couldn’t help but stare at the knife still in his arm.
“Scuse me,” Jacob patted the wounded limb, “this is fake, right? Yeah, it’s a prosthetic. You might want to make that clear the next time you try something like that, cause ah think it looks to my companions that you just stabbed yourself through the arm!”
Prosthetic? Wait, a fake?
His arm isn’t real? It looks so lifelike… “Oh! Oh right… Sorry, sometimes I forget it isn’t so obvious to everyone else as it is to me.” I breathe a sigh of relief as he removes the knife.
Thank the gods, I didn’t even know what he was doing! When he passed the knife back to Venik, the smaller Venlil gave him a well-deserved kick in the leg.
“Yeah, it’s a prosthetic arm!” Jacob waved his arms to calm us. I was already controlling my breath, and Sharnet’s fur was slowly lowering. “Means it’s not… organic. ” He turned towards Kaeden and pointed at the arm. “You don’t need any help with repairing anything, do ya? Ah work in construction, so ah have a good amount of experience with repairing robotics. Those things are always tryin’ ta break down.”
Kaeden bobbed his head in response. “I will have to keep you in mind. Right now I’m in good shape! I can do most of the day to day stuff, but for anything major I’m uh…
short handed.”
My translator noted that the last part was used as a terrible pun, and I couldn’t help but let out a disapproving bleat. By the sounds of it, Sharnet and Jacob had similar attitudes towards the joke. Of course, as with all puns, this only gave the offender strength. “I’m glad puns can be translated.” He laughed. “That opens some new roads.”
At the very least, that kind of joke basically destroys any intimidation one might have. Even after seeing him stabbing himself, I no longer felt nervous thanks to the pun. Going by her body language, it would even seem that Sharnet feels the same.
“Well,” she comments, “I guess I don’t have too much to worry about if that’s your level of amusement.” She steps forward and gives a signal of greeting along with a bow. “My name is Sharnet. I’m an… independent journalist.” With the ease of muscle memory, she pulls her holonote from her belt pack and flips it open.“I was hoping I could ask you all some questions about the exchange program. I’ll need to use my holonote, if you don’t mind.”
As soon as those words leave her mouth, I see Kaeden stiffen.
Do reporters make him uncomfortable? “If the Cotton Balls don’t mind answering your questions, you can interview them.” While attempting to seem calm, Kaeden begins to shuffle towards a corner of the room. “I… prefer to keep my face away from as many people as possible. Vichee, if you’d like to step out of the picture too, you can join me in hiding over here.”
Cotton Balls? No matter my curiosity, it was still polite to step back myself, and Jacob agreed. Sharnet had one of her ears raised, likely in , as she started her interview. “I will not take any photos for anonymity, and will only use my Note as an audio recording. Is that acceptable?” She blinks twice before speaking again. “Wait, ‘Cotton Balls?’”
Kaabra chuckles. “Kaeden likes to use nicknames for pretty much everything. But yeah, I’m okay with that. What about you, Venik?”
Venik swishes his tail in a sign of approval.
It’s nice to see how close they all are. Sharnet’s sways in turn. “I’ll get the obvious questions out of the way first: did either of you feel in danger while meeting with your partner? If yes, what changed for you to feel as comfortable as you appear to be right now?”
Kaabra angles her eyes away for a moment, as if she was thinking about how to answer the question. “Kaeden had startled me when he showed up. I had my back turned, which resulted in the ‘incident’ he mentioned. But after I woke up, I noticed he took great care to clean up and offered to help me clean my fur. There’s…always a bit of fear, I won’t lie. However, his actions never showed anything but respect, care and affection for me. It’s more than enough to keep the instincts at bay.”
Sharnet flicks her tail and turns her holonote to Venik. “And what about you? I thought the program only assigned one human to one Venlil.”
Venik’s ears droop a little. “My human never made it to the station. Something in the text logs prompted investigation. I never heard from him again. I was allowed to stay thanks to being with Kaeden.” Venik fully flattens his ears in annoyance.
Sharnet perks up at the mention of his human. “Investigation? Do you think that the humans are hiding something?” She flicked her tail. “Beyond the obvious about them being predators, that is.”
“Hiding something? No, I don’t think so. Kaeden’s been very open with us, even with a lot of the… more
unsavory aspects of their culture. As for my partner, I’ve gone over the logs, trying to find something that might have prompted investigation. He seemed kind enough, but was almost…flirtatious? Uncomfortably so, at points.”
“Ah think ah might have run into him,” Jacob announced, “some guy declared he was after ‘sweet, sweet xussy.’ Which station were y’all on?”
I nearly choke at what Jacob said, devolving into a small coughing fit. Kaeden does the same.
Xussy? Is that what they’re calling it?? “The secondary station” Veink eyes Kaeden sideways. I can feel Sharnet’s upon me as well.
I must remember never to use Jacob’s pad. “Way-ell,” Jacob drawled, “might have been another guy. Ah left him tied up on the shuttle, just in case.”
“Okay,” my poor, innocent Sharnet spoke, slightly uncomfortable, “good to know they’re avoiding the… more
lustful ones. I can’t say that’s unique to them, the crowd outside is proof of that. Is that all you’ve seen so far as evidence of hiding? No weapons being smuggled to the planet? No secret invasion fleet? No super-soldiers sneaking onto the planet?”
I must admit, I myself have thought of things humans haven’t told us. Still, those ideas are a little extreme. Though, the super soldier part seems to cause Kaeden distress.
Does he know something?
“Super soldiers?” Jacob interrupted. “That was on the ‘it’s predatory so banned’ list! How do y’all have that concept?”
Sharnet waved her tail in calm dismissal. “One politician or another always gets the idea that ‘This technology, training, or feature is going to be THE thing to turn back the Greys!’” she explains. “If it wasn’t already apparent, it never works out.”
“It’s the same on Earth, honestly. Every few decades someone tries to make a super soldier. Usually it just ends up with combat stimulants.” Kaeden commented, his voice cracking as he spoke.
Wait.
Prosthetics. Military. Reshaping. Familiarity. “Ah, that’s what they did to him. Poor guy.”
I felt Kaeden’s eyes on me.
Speh, I might have said that aloud. It must not have been too noticeable, thankfully, as Sharnet appeared to not hear. She soon turned back to Venik and Kaabra. “So, you didn’t see anything noteworthy?”
Venik and Kaabra drooped their tails in negative responses as Venik answered. “If they have anything like that, they’re keeping it from the other humans too.”
Sharnet visibly relaxed at that. Yet within that, I noticed a hint of disappointment. Some part of her must have still hoped there was something to justify her actions. She moved her left paw to her leg and gripped the fur there for a moment. “Noted. So; next obvious question. To your knowledge, have there been any instances of a human harming their partner? Causing panic doesn’t count, for the record.”
Kaabra perked her ears. “When I first arrived at the station, I asked a similar question. But the Venlil guide there told me no one was hurt. The only instance that came close was a human trying to sneak up on their partner to scare them. The other humans practically threw him off the station afterwards.”
Sharnet’s ears lowered slightly before perking back up in a forced manner. She didn’t seem to want to show something. “Okay, big question now. What
flaws do you think the program has? Things you think the next potential round could correct?”
The pair flicked their tails as they thought. Kaabra continues.“Flaws…hmm. Maybe increasing the exposure steadily? Going from pure text and voice based communication straight to in person was…jarring. Allowing visuals like pictures and video might have helped soften the impact. Maybe an option to share media too? Even if only approved things. Kaeden and I talked a lot about music and books, but we had no way to share them.”
“Me and Tarlim got lucky,” Jacob noted, “Our monitoring program was glitched. Let us send a couple pictures to each other before it got patched.”
That is true.
I have to wonder how much effect those photos had on me. Sharnet wagged her tail. “Well, what about the station itself? Or even the facility here? Anything you would improve about the places of meeting?”
“The rooms on the station felt like jail cells. Comforts were sparse, and space even sparser. Probably made everyone feel even more stressed, I know I was.” Kaeden chimed in. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise that I never got to go there.
Which reminds me. “Definitely not enough head room,” I add with a bit of a huff. “I’m still surprised this place allows me to stand straight.”
“A partitioned meeting room might have helped. Humans enter from one side, Venlil the other. Would have cut down on the instances of startling.” Kaabra added.
“We could also use a deterrent against dive-bombing birds so they don’t bust themselves
against a window,” Jacob snarked, gesturing at Vichee. The bird ducked their head into a wing, obviously embarrassed. I couldn’t help but agree. This place was to help people feel safe!
“Okay, so there’s definitely room for improvement.” Sharnet noted before squinting at the pair of Venlil.
Now this is a new expression for her! Her tail lashed behind her. “Are you two mated?”
Okay! That was blunt of her! The pair were almost glowing through their fur with their bloom!
That definitely answers that. Happy to be proven right, Sharnet wagged her tail. “Oh, how long have you been mated?”
Kaabra and Venik both look over to an obviously stressed Kaeden.
Why would they look at him for a question regarding their mating? Wait… Sharnet followed their gaze, pausing for a second. Suddenly, she reached the same realization I did as her eyes slightly bulged. Unlike me, however, she spoke her hypothesis, the words seeming to fall out of her mouth. “A-Are you two mated with a human!? How long has that been happening??”
I didn’t think it was possible for an uninjured Venlil to turn so orange. “About a week…” Kaabra admits quietly.
This seemed to only intensify Sharnet’s drive, as her ears perked up naturally. It’s almost like she couldn’t stop herself. “Is there any knowledge of biological compatibility? Were you both in season?? Is this even allowed?!”
Kaabra bleated in flusterment, quickly hiding her heavily blooming face behind her paws. I felt bad for her. Having her private life put on display like this must be embarrassing, I should know. It would seem as though Kaeden felt the same, as he soon interjected in her place.
“Kaabra’s cycle came early. It was, uh... very unexpected for us all. Venik got caught in it too. Thankfully, it would seem that I have better self control. I wasn’t affected too badly. As for it being allowed? We…have no idea.”
Sharnet looked to be about to say more.
That’s enough. I stepped forward between her and them. She looked up at me, her ears giving a confused flick. “That is something between them, Sharnet. We don’t need to cause an incident over this.” I sighed heavily. On the topic of cycles, though, my thoughts wandered down to the crowd amassed below. I suppressed a snicker. “Besides, those people outside with the “we’re delicious” signs will likely cause enough problems without our aid.” I mentally cringed as the last part left my mouth.
Why did they come to mind? “I’m sorry,
what?” Vichee suddenly burst out. Kaeden seemed similarly taken aback.
“There…there are people who want us to eat them? What the fuck…”
That’s certainly ONE way to put it! “By tha looks of tha crowd down thar,” Jacob called from the balcony window, my translator struggling to handle his now emphasized accent , “ah think thay mean et in more than one way!” A laugh came from his speaker, “Rainbow socks! Ah think humans are gonna fit in jus’ fine!”
Rainbow what? Venik perked his ears in familiarity as he turned to Jacob. “Socks? Raven said I should get some, but Kaeden won’t tell me why!”
I heard a groan erupt from Kaeden.
It would seem that Venik hasn’t quite caught on! “You know, speaking of that group,” Sharnet speaks up again, tragically derailing the topic, “Vichee. Are you a part of the “we’re delicious” group? Did you come here for a predator to eat you, or “eat” you?”
For all the flaws of the translator, I’ll give credit where credit’s due when a euphemism is translated so perfectly! Vichee flaps their wings in what I can only assume is embarrassment. “I uh… w-well… I was curious! About humans! I-I thought maybe we c-could be friends, b-but I was scared they would want to eat me. In the uh…fatal way. I kinda hoped I’d at least make a good slave…”
“Okay,” Jacob’s speaker sounded, his voice suddenly dripping in exasperation, “
besides just being wrong, why would we even need slaves? Automation is so much cheaper! Heck, we even automated actual killing completely out of the meat that everyone panics about us eating! That’s one of the few “predatory” facts we’re actually
encouraged to mention! Why would we even want to eat or enslave any of y’all?”
I could see Kaeden shuffling his feet, uncomfortable at Jacob’s outburst. “You’ve seen the videos, right? About…you know, what the grays do to them?” He said softly.
“Ah’m pretty sure it should be obvious we’re not moronic Nazi Lizards!” Jacob sighed, roughly tapping his helmet with his glove. “Ah can’t think of anything that actually looks similar between us! Even our eyes are different!! So mah question stands! Why do y’all think that we’re specifically here to cause harm?”
I stare at my friend for a moment. His previous positivity was genuine, but…was at least part of it an act to hide some hurt? Vichee sputtered and flapped their wings nervously. “You eat meat! We’re all
made of meat! Meat eaters need to kill in order to survive! Besides, don’t predators have to hunt? Don’t you have instincts to suppress around us?”
“What, do y’all have instincts to suppress every time ya see a bush?” He raised his arms.
Definite frustration. “We just stop eating when not hungry! And how are y’all different? Y’all nearly killed Tarlim just cause he made y’all scared! How is killing ‘because I’m scared’ better than killing to not starve?”
He sighed. “Look, Ah don’t expect you to change your mind today. Ah’ve just been around a lot of Venlil on the station whose attitude can be summed up as ‘my partner’s the lone exception to my fear.’ Gets frustratin’ after a while.”
I want to give words of comfort. I-
“Okay, one more question.” Sharnet suddenly spoke up, probably to break up Jacob’s rant. She turned one eye directly at Vichee. “You spoke about fear of being eaten, enslaved, and/or killed, so I must ask: why are you staying? Here, in this room? The balcony is right there. You could fly right off and none of us could stop you!”
Vichee twitched their wings, very anxious in their answer. “I’m scared. Alright? Absolutely terrified. I could probably lay an egg and not even notice. But… for all the fear, I haven't felt threatened? The entire time? Does that make sense?”
They paused for a second to nervously preen themselves.“That one, Kaeden, he could have easily killed me a hundred times by now, but he just… let me stay here. Asked me my name. And those two, they are completely at ease around him. I saw him pick one up and put his face to their stomach! When I swooped in, they were mad at
me for interrupting! It’s just… bizarre! All of it! The longer I stay here, I just… feel okay?.”
I felt my tail waving in sympathy. It is so confusing to have what you expect to be so different from reality. Sharnet lowered her ears onto her head. “At least you’re handling this better than I did.” She shut her holonote and placed it back into her belt pack.
Another reminder of how poorly she handled her own meeting. “Thank you all for your time.”
“Did you miss the part where they attacked me?” Kaeden pointed at the scratches in his clothes with a laugh in his voice.
Sharnet let out a nervous giggle herself, trying to play it as not that important. “You did say you wanted to ‘step out of the picture.’ I thought you didn’t want to answer any questions.”
“I’m just saying, if
this is handling it better than you did…” Kaeden trailed off as he spoke. He’s smart, he can put the pieces together.
He would know. I looked down at Sharnet. She was gripping the fur on her legs tightly as Kaeden seemed to stare at her, becoming more and more uncomfortable. Jacob appeared to sense the change in mood as he walked over to the door, cracking it open to peer out.
“Looks like the crowd has cleared,” he announced, making a slight show “we can get out of y’all’s hair…fur? Wool? Whatever term works.” He waved his arm in that random uncertainty gesture. “We can let you get back to whatever it was y’all were doing before.”
Venik and Kaabra fidgeted, their tails lightly twining. Kaeden sighed tiredly. “It was good to meet all of you. For what it’s worth, I hope to run into you all again. Just uh, not literally next time.”
I began to guide Sharnet to the door. She was a bit stiff, the memories getting too fresh for her to handle. “Who knows,” I called back to Kaeden, “a chance meeting could occur. It was good meeting…
y’all too!” I let my tail wag as I ducked out the door.
Nailed it! Behind me, Jacob bade his goodbye then began to follow us out, but stopped before closing the door. Even as we were heading down the hall, I heard his parting remarks. “Hey, if y’all are havin’ sex, get some condoms, fer God’s sake! Ah don't want to hear about real-life space herpes breaking out round here!” With that, I heard the door click shut as he caught up. I toyed with the idea of telling him that I had heard what he said, but I decided against it.
There’s been enough personal details spilled for one day.
Besides, I can always look up the words on their data dump! That shouldn’t be too terrible! How bad could it really be?

I regret having eyes. I’d like to refund my brain, please. It’s corrupted. My paws wouldn’t have kept clicking the links otherwise!
