Journal of Camille Lambert - April 13th (Part 2)

The mist rolled in from the edge of town, swallowing buildings, tents, and trucks as the klaxon alarm sounded. I looked up and saw the sky beginning to fade into absolute darkness, even though it should have been hours before dusk.
“Fascinating…” I heard Dr. Di Cesare say beside me, although she was the only one who seemed to think so.

Milo stared into the mist with a look of dread as flashes of gunfire began to go off deep inside, briefly illuminating the moving shadows as the screams of dying men and impossible monsters filled our ears.
“Kallas, Valentine, the refugees! Get them out!” He ordered. Neither of them needed to be told twice. The words were barely out of his mouth when they took off at a sprint toward the tents, guns already drawn.

“Gretchen, how do we drive them off?”
“They circumvented my runes… how…” She said under her breath, sounding more annoyed than anything else.
“Gretchen!” Milo snapped, and she seemed to be pulled out of her train of thought.
“Uncertain. I need to get back to my lab. Everything I could use would be there!”
She took off like a shot, and as she ran, the mist overtook us, turning her into little more than a shadow ahead of us.

“Stay close!” Milo ordered, going for his pistol, although we could barely see him through the mist either. I felt Dom reaching for my hand and looked over to see his shadow, pistol drawn and trying to keep up with Milo and Gretchen. Her white RV hadn’t been parked that far away, but it might as well have been miles.

The chorus of gunfire and screams roared in my ears. I could hear inhuman screeches as men were torn limb from bloody limb. As Dom led me behind Milo, I couldn’t help but look over and pray that our people were managing, somehow. Through the mist, I could see a shadow racing toward us. At a glance, I almost thought that it might be a man on a horse but… no. The sigil of an eye burned onto its forehead made that very clear.

“LOOK OUT!” I called in the moment before the horseman raced toward us. I could see Milo diving out of the way while Dom pulled me back. He fired two shots at it, and though I did not get a good look at the creature before us, I saw enough to know that it wasn’t a horse and a rider… it was one creature. A pale, blood soaked thing with claws like scythes and eyes crowned around its head like a wreathe. It slashed at Dom who dove out of the way, before rearing up on its hind legs and unleashing a scream that sounded like a man in pain.

I could see Milo firing at it as well, but the bullets might as well have done nothing to it. Just like the last Sigiled Nightwalker, it barely even seemed to notice.
“You made your choice to stay here…” A raspy voice echoed from the creature, and I knew that it was Calhoun speaking to us. “Now look what you’ve made me do.”

The Nightwalker came for me next, and I dove to the ground, scrambling away as its claws raked against the asphalt road. The red eye sigil focused on me, and on the creature's face I could see a gaping maw underneath that eye, dripping with wet saliva and filled with long, jagged teeth.

It reared up again, and I could do nothing but wait to be crushed beneath its hooves when the deafening echo of a gunshot rang out. The Nightwalker screamed. Chunks of its head were ripped away from it and a new, pinkish steam rose from the mess that was left. It collapsed onto its side, still twitching in death.
I looked over to see the shadow of Dr. Di Cesare, holding that revolver of hers.
“Most interesting… assuming direct control over certain Nightwalkers.” She said. “Come There are certainly more.”
Dom helped me to my feet and we took off toward the RV again.

Through the mist, I could see the RV up ahead. Dr. Di Cesare threw the door open and quickly ushered us inside. As soon as it was closed again, I watched her take a knife from her coat and roll up her sleeve. Without so much as a wince of pain, she drew the blade across her hand, then using one finger, began to hastily draw a sigil on the door.
“Should keep them out… should…” She murmured, and once she was done she tore past us, deeper into the RV.

There seemed like she’d been using it as some sort of makeshift lab. I could see counters littered with old books, jars full of strange ingredients, and a small altar with scattered journal pages laying around it. I could see photos and diagrams of strange flowers that seemed to be every color at once and none of them at the same time, and crude anatomical sketches of flower-headed creatures.

On a small work desk pressed into one corner, I heard a walkie talkie crackle to life.
“Can you hold them back? We’re still loading the trucks!”
I recognized the voice on the other end as Kallas.
“Well move your fucking ass! We’re losing ground here!” Came the reply and it sounded like it was coming from Nina.

Milo ran toward the desk, grabbing the radio off of it.
“Valentine, Kallas, what’s going on out there?” He demanded.
“Everything’s gone to shit!” Valentine replied, “We’re falling back to the Church!”
“Already?” Milo asked, breathless. “Gretchen, how long before you can-”

“And who’s this I’m hearing now?” A new voice asked. It sounded like an older man, although I knew it wasn’t Calhoun.
I looked over at Dom, wondering if maybe he recognized it. Judging by his expression, he did.
“Who the hell is this?” Milo demanded.
“I’m the man watching you folks get your asses beat. It’s kinda funny, actually. You people come in here, throwing your weight around all high and mighty only to crumble the moment we give you anything more than a little love tap. Name’s McClellan. I suppose you could say that I’m the Sheriff around these parts.”

“Oh for fucks sake, are they on our goddamn channel?” Nina asked.
“Thought I’d tune in, see how things were going. Governor Calhoun was kind enough to spare me and my boys the hassle of dealing with you personally. Least we can do is enjoy the show.”
“Oh God… he’s monologuing!” Nina whined.

“You folks have kicked the beehive. Now you’re gonna get stung.” McClellan crooned. Everything he said ended in an upward inflection and it had already gotten annoying.
The Governor wasn’t too happy to have to clean out the other towns, but you forced his hand. And what he’s gonna do next… you should be held accountable for that too.”

“Next?” Milo asked warily although before he could get his answer, something hit the RV, rocking it violently from side to side. Dr. Di Cesare almost fell over, before bracing herself against the counter and going through her books. She glanced at one of the flower diagrams before violently shaking her head and tossing it aside. Over the radio, I could hear McClellan laughing.
“Gretchen?” Milo asked, “Please tell me you’ve got something!”
“Patience…” She urged, “Extant research only addresses killing these things one at a time, not as an army.”

The RV rocked again and I ran to the window to look out. I could see something move past, something a hell of a lot bigger than the one the Doctor had just killed. Through the mist and the darkness, I could see the glow of a fire flare to life somewhere in the distance. Somehow, I got the feeling that Nina was behind it.
“Just tell me what we need to do to kill these goddamn things!” Milo snapped as the RV was hit again. I saw something in the opposite window, vacant black eyes and flat, chitinous mandibles that clicked together, only barely hiding the incomprehensible mouth behind them.

“I can’t just cast a spell and kill them all!” Gretchen replied, “I need more time! Maybe if I can open a door to another pocket we can at least get out of here, but I need time to find a safe one!” I could hear something scraping against the metal roof of the RV and saw it begin to buckle near the corner. Jagged spikes broke through it as whatever was outside began to pry open the RV like a can of soup.
“We don’t have time!” Milo warned.

Dom watched as the Nightwalker began to pry at the roof before looking over through the window and noticing its shiny black eye. Without a moment of hesitation, he fired at it, shattering the window and cracking it like an egg. A thick, black goo dribbled out of it and the Nightwalker shrank back, letting out a screech of pain. It briefly retreated, holding its spikey, crablike claws in front of it defensively. I could hear it making an irate clicking noise and it waited for a moment as Dom fired a few more rounds at it although this time, they just bounced uselessly off its armor.

“Five trucks out. Confirmed that two are at the Church!” I heard Kallas say over the radio, “Six, seven and eight almost loaded. Those are the last ones!”
“You might get these ones out… but there’ll always be more.” McClellan said, “I’ll admit that this has all been a bit of a setback, but there’s a lot of little towns just ripe for the picking out there. And once he gets the rest of the 5000 souls he needs… well, if you think this is bad, wait until you see what he’ll be able to do then.”
“Truck six is away! Three is at the church!” Kallas said, trying his damnedest to ignore McClellan.
“Double time it!” Milo snapped, “Valentine, what’s going on out there?”

“Fire’s keeping them at bay but they’re getting brave!” She warned, “We’re heading back toward the refugees. Milo, where are you now?”
“I’m in Di Cesare’s lab, with Dominic and Camille.”
“We’re gonna need to fall back to the church. Can you meet us there?” Nina asked.
Milo looked over at me.
“Get to the driver's seat, keys are in the ignition. Get us out of here.” He said. I just nodded and did what he asked, listening as he went back to Nina.
“We’re en route!”

Just like Milo had promised, I found the keys in the ignition and turned them. The engine roared to life. Through the mist, I could see the shadows of other Nightwalkers and my blood turned to ice in my veins as I saw the sigils on their foreheads. Crimson eyes, more than I could count at a glance, and each of them watching me.

The RV shook again and from the corner of my eye, I saw a massive claw coming for me. I threw myself to the ground as it shattered the driver's side window. The claw ripped through the cabin of the RV, before prying the roof off completely and tossing it aside.

I watched the Crab Thing as it approached the ruined cabin. One spiky leg came down on the hood of the RV. The Crab’s one remaining eye seemed to fixate on me as it reached for me with a claw, and I scrambled backward, only barely avoiding it. I looked back just in time to see Milo with a look of utter horror on his face. He grabbed me by the arm, pulling me deeper into the RV as the Crab Thing began trying to pry the roof off again.

Behind it, I could see other Nightwalkers drawing near.
There was no running from this.

“Gretchen, either shoot this goddamn thing or do something!” Milo cried, looking over at Gretchen. She glanced away from her research with wide eyes. I saw her reach for her revolver, only to hesistate when she noticed the other Nightwalkers watching us from behind the Crab Thing. I could see her doing the math in her head. Four shots left… not enough to kill the Crab and the Nightwalkers. The gun couldn’t save us. Her eyes settled on the flower diagram she’d cast aside earlier. I saw her grimace before running toward the back window.

“Shaal forgive me…” She said under her breath as she pressed a finger into the cut in her hand and began to hastily paint another sigil on the glass.
“Everybody get under something. It will go for the Crab first. As soon as it does, run. Do not stop.”
“What are you gonna do?” Dom asked.
“I’m opening another door… you’re not going to like what’s about to come through,” She replied and grabbed something off of the counter, hesitated for a moment, and dusted it carelessly on the blood she’d marked the window with. Then, as if she’d just thrown a live grenade she dove under her desk.

Milo scrambled behind a chair, while I pulled Dom behind one of the counters. The Crab Thing peeled the roof up, leaving us completely exposed and for a moment, I wondered if Dr. Di Cesare’s plan had failed.

Then I heard the sound of shattering glass. I looked to see that something had just launched itself through the window. It landed gracelessly on the ground, before stumbling around on coltish legs. It almost resembled a person, or maybe even one of the smaller Nightwalkers. But there was something very different about it. Its skin was an unusual shade of pinkish green, strange luminous flowers like the ones in the photographs Dr. Di Cesare kept in her lab, and moss seemed to bloom from its skin, and I swore that I could see pale yellow eyes in the center of those flowers. Its body seemed to ripple and change. Its hands twisted into gripping claws as it let out a raspy hiss.

Every single eye on it focused on the crab, which paused for a moment before reaching for the new creature. The claw closed around it, and the creature writhed and screamed, its flesh twisting and morphing into sharp tendrils that it slid between the gaps in the Crabs chitin, earning a fresh cry of pain from it. The new creature's head seemed to be split open, sort of like a flower blossoming, unleashing a shimmering payload of what looked like spores into the Crab’s face.

From his position behind the chair, I saw Milo’s eyes wide with terror as he watched this unfold. It was the kind of terror I’d never seen before. Something so deep in his soul that it must have took everything he had not to scream.

Dr. Di Cesare scrambled out from under her desk. She snatched the radio from Milo and without so much as a moment of hesitation ran for the door of the RV.
“Move!” She said, with an urgency that I knew better than to ignore. The three of us abandoned the RV and took off into the mist.

“Mr. Kallas, as soon as the trucks are through, kill the bonfire at the church! Cut off all access to the Calhoun Pocket!”
“What, why?” Kallas demanded.
“The situation has worsened, we need to enact full quarantine measures!” Dr. Di Cesare said, “Do it now!”
“What the hell did you just do?” Nina demanded, “Gretchen, where’s Milo?”
“We’re heading for the refugee area, on foot! Do not wait for us! I repeat, do not wait for us!

I had no idea what the hell the Doctor had just done, but I didn’t think I’d ever hear fear like that in her voice. It was the first time she hadn’t sounded completely composed. The fire was growing closer, and seemed to have spread to most of the town. Buildings burned around us, as did tents. I could see the shadows of other Nightwalkers silhouetted against the inferno, bringing back memories of the last time Puriysk had burned. Up ahead, there was gunfire and I saw one of the refugee trucks skidding onto the road, and away toward the church.

Looking back, I could see shapes pursuing us in the mist. I couldn’t make out what they were, but the sigils on their foreheads told me enough. They were gaining on us, and I could only pray to whatever God was listening that they wouldn’t catch up.

Beside me, I saw the fire grow taller and almost fell over, trying to get away from it. The fire seemed to rise up into the sky before coming down on some of the Nightwalkers that pursued us. I looked over to see Dr. Di Cesare, a hand outstretched and a frantic look on her face. She moved her hands again, pulling more of the inferno onto the road to cover our tracks.
“Don’t stop!” She said, “Keep running!”
And I did exactly what she told me to do.

I could see another car up ahead, an SUV this time tearing onto the road, although, unlike the truck before it, it turned toward us and skidded to a stop just up ahead. Milo reached the SUV first, throwing open the passenger door and getting in. Dom and I were second, with Dr. Di Cesare being the last.

From the driver's seat, I could see Nina looking back at us, making sure that everyone was there before making a sharp U-turn and speeding toward the church, leaving Puriysk and the Nightwalkers behind.

“Are you genuinely insane?” Milo demanded, looking back at Dr. Di Cesare. “Do you have any idea how stupid that was!”
“It was the only spell I could think of that would yield immediate results,” She said. “Every time you open that door, something always comes through.”
“Yes, and there’s a very good reason you don’t open that door, Gretchen! You’re lucky we’re not all dead right now! For Gods sake, you may have just killed us all anyway!”

“What the fuck did she just do?” Nina asked, confused.
Her question went largely ignored.
“We were out of options!” Dr. Di Cesare replied, “We are up against an opponent who will resort to any means to dispose of us! Any means. It is therefore necessary that we do the same!”
“And that gives you carte blanche to unleash that? For Gods sake, we weren’t even equipped to deal with that! That wasn’t even part of the goddamn discussion until you pulled it in!
“Can somebody just explain to me what the hell just happened?” Dom snapped.

Milo looked over at him, then back to Gretchen.
“There are countless other pocket realities in the vast expanse of the void,” She said. “Many serve as havens for various Gods and their followers… I simply opened a door to let one of them in.”
“I wouldn’t call that thing a God, I’d call it a plague!” Milo said.
“Hive mind,” Dr. Di Cesare corrected, “The Prince of Rosen Spring operates as a singular consciousness, it has more in common with fungi than a virus or pathogen.”

“I’m sorry, did you just summon The Fucking Rosen Prince?” Nina asked, and again she was ignored.
“Whatever it is, we have a standing order to burn any trace of that thing we come across,” Milo said. “Why the hell do you even know how to summon it?”
“I don’t work for you!” Dr. Di Cesare replied harshly, “I’m allowed to research whatever topic captures my interest!”
“Well do me a favor and warn me the next time you’re about to unleash a Class 5 Apocalyptic entity!”
“You wanted something that would get them off of us, I delivered! We were exposed and outnumbered, there were no other viable options!”

“Can we go back to the part where you called that thing an ‘Apocalyptic Entity?’” Dom asked. “What the hell did you just bring in?”
“It’s a sort of hive mind,” Dr. Di Cesare explained. “It infects other entities, absorbs them into its shared consciousness, and uses the bodies either as drones, or organic material to construct new bodies for itself.”
“Oh my fucking God…” Nina said under her breath, “And you just pulled that out of your ass? You didn’t try shooting your fucking magic gun?”

“We do not have the munitions to just mindlessly shoot everything that poses a threat! At minimum… the Rosen Prince should distract Calhoun and his Nightwalkers long enough for us to complete the evacuation!”
“Yeah, by absorbing this entire place!” Milo spat. “At this point, Calhoun’s already dead… let the Rosen Prince take care of him!”

“That’s not a gamble we should be willing to take,” Dr. Di Cesare said. “We are not dealing with a man who is trapped here. If this situation becomes untenable, I have zero doubt that he will simply abandon this place and begin again elsewhere, at which point it may become impossible to find him again. Even if we did, factoring in the recent sacrifices, it’s highly probable that he would be exceedingly harder to kill. If you want this man dead, then our window of opportunity is now and it is closing very rapidly!”
“Hey… this may be a stupid question but what happens if the Rosen Prince assimilates Calhoun or the Eldest?” Nina asked.

Both the Doctor and Milo fell silent. Milo’s head slowly turned to look at her.
“Yes, Gretchen. What happens then?” He asked.
Dr. Di Cesare was silent for a moment.
“All the more reason to kill Calhoun first,” She finally said.

Up ahead, I could see the ruins of the church, although the moment I saw them, it was already clear to me that something was wrong. The church was dark. There was no light from the bonfire inside and as we drove past the metal poles that marked the doorway, I noticed no change in the forest around us.
“Oh no…” Nina said under her breath, “Fuck, fuck, fuck fuck…”
She tried to steer the car through the other doorway, but nothing changed.

The doors were closed.

“Good, Mr. Kallas has ensured that nothing can escape."
“Yeah and that includes us, dumbass!” Nina snapped.
“That’s of no concern. I can open another, smaller door. We should shore up inside that church. We’ll get out the same way you did before,” Dr. Di Cesare said.
Nina swore under her breath before driving toward the ruins of the church.

She skidded to a stop, and Dr. Di Cesare was the first one out.
“We need to move quickly, get anything you can burn and get it now. Time is short,” She said.
Nina went around the back of the SUV and pulled the trunk open, taking out a can of spare gasoline before following Dr. Di Cesare inside the church.
“There’s one more in there,” She said to me and Dom. “Grab it!”

I figured that since I had the idlest hands, it might as well be me. I grabbed the gas can from the back of the SUV and took a parting look at Puriysk, which burned brightly behind us. The fire seemed to have consumed everything, and though the sky was dark, the glow from the inferno made it look like twilight. It was both the most beautiful and horrible thing I’d ever seen.

Even from where I stood, I could still hear the screams coming from Puriysk, only now they weren’t the screams of men being slaughtered by monsters… they were the screams of monsters slaughtering each other. I couldn’t help but wonder what was going on in that town… and realized that it might be better if I didn’t know.

I didn’t linger, I took the gas can into the church, following Nina. She was already beginning to dump the contents of the can on the charred ashes of the bonfire. Milo was right beside her, tossing some of the extra firewood that the others had collected to keep the fire alive onto it, to try and give it some new life.

“There’s headlights down the road, somebody’s coming!” Dom called from the doorway of the church.
“More refugees?” Milo asked.
“I don’t think so.”

Milo swore under his breath.
“Gretchen, can you finish up?”
“I need a minute,” She said. “We undid the old runes and ritual circle when we expanded it outside the church. I need to repair them.”

Milo growled in frustration before storming over toward the Church door. Nina tossed her empty gas can aside and went to follow, blowing past Dom and Milo and heading back out to the SUV. I watched her pull open the drivers side door and take something out. It took me a moment to recognize exactly what it was.

It was a rifle. She hastily checked the magazine before looking out at the oncoming headlights. I could make out three cars, most of them older and more worn than the ones Milo’s people drove although the one at the front was a clean, polished muscle car.

I’d seen that car before, and I knew that Dom had too.
It seemed that Sheriff McClellan was here to deal with us personally.

The cars slowed to a stop before us, and the four of us stood at the ready. I reached for the .22 I’d kept holstered, and felt a little guilty for the small sense of relief I felt that my gun might actually be useful for a change.

The doors of McClellan’s car opened, and I saw him stepping out of the driver's seat. I could see other men getting out of the cars behind him.
“Hell of a mess you’ve caused us…” McClellan said. His black boots sank into the mud beneath him. His wispy white hair seemed to flutter in the wind. I could see a chrome revolver sitting on his hip. “And yet you just refuse to die.”

“You must be the Sheriff,” Milo said coldly.
“And you must be the dumb motherfucker who thought he’d mess around with Governor Calhoun… how’s that working out for you.”
“Well despite everything, I’d say we’ve probably taken fewer losses than you have,” Milo replied. McClellan actually cracked a half smile at that.

“You’re a cocky little shit, I’ll give you that.” He said. “Not sure what the hell you assholes did back there… but I’ve never seen Nightwalkers claw each other to pieces like that before… either way, the fight’s over. And from where I’m standing it looks like you’re running outta here with your tail between your legs.”

“And from where I’m standing, you look like a dead man walking,” Milo replied. “If you’re smart, you’ve come here to leave with us. I don’t know if you realize what’s just been unleashed here, but mark my words in a few days time this place will be nothing but a graveyard.”
“Oh, I can promise that whatever you think you did, isn’t gonna change a damn thing,” McClellan said. “You can run if you’d like. I’ll even let you do it. Either way, once he’s got the rest of the souls he needs the Governor will hunt you down like the rats you are and-”

A volley of gunshots came from beside us as Nina started shooting. I saw a couple of the Sheriff’s Boys behind McClellan go down, while others dove for cover. McClellan himself moved behind his car with surprising speed, only narrowly avoiding Nina’s trigger happy rampage.

“These people talk too fucking much…” She said under her breath as we hid behind the stone walls of the church.
“Open fire boys, let’s clean this up!” I heard McClellan bark from behind his car.

I saw a couple of the Sheriff’s Boys try to peek out from behind one of their cars, and took aim at them, firing blindly. One window of the car shattered, and one of the Boys had time to pull his head back. The other wasn’t so lucky. His head jerked back and he hit the ground dead.

I felt my heart skip a beat, as I realized that I’d been the one who killed him… although there was hardly time to process what I’d just done. The gunfire around me saw to that.
“Reserve units, move in on the Church! We need some backup!” McClellan said, presumably speaking into a radio and not talking to himself. I saw the door of his car open as he tried to crawl back inside. Milo seemed to see it too and fired at the driver's side of the windshield. He only got off a couple of shots before McClellan’s retort blew a fresh hole through the glass.

I heard Milo cry out in pain and hit the ground, clutching at his shoulder. Nina’s eyes widened as she watched him fall, and I ran to his side to check on him. He pressed a hand against the wound, gritting his teeth and trying not to scream.
“I-I’m alright…” He lied, but I knew that he was out of the fight.

“Motherfucker…” Nina spat, before directing her fire at McClellan’s car, putting bullet after bullet through his windshield. I could hear a pained scream from inside and heard the engine turn over. McClellan’s car was launched backward, going in full reverse and slamming into one of the other Sheriff’s Boys cars. It knocked the car back against the boys hiding behind it, forcing them out of cover. A move that Dom was quick to punish. His gun spoke three times, and I saw two men fall, one dead and the other wounded.

McClellan hit the gas again, still in reverse and desperately trying to flee. He only succeeded in pushing the car he’d just hit over the wounded man.

I could see more headlights in the distance, driving through the flaming ruins of Puriysk toward us, although against the fires I could see the shadow of what used to be the Crab Thing coming to intercept them. I watched as it impaled one car on one of its sharp legs and caught another in its pincers, dutifully tearing at it to get to the meat inside. Tendrils like vines seemed to hang off of its body now, and I watched them slither inside the broken car. I consider myself lucky that I didn’t have to witness what they did to the people inside.

With most of McClellan’s group dead, Nina stepped out into the open, firing again at his car. I saw the driver's side door open and watched as McClellan tumbled out, his body bloody and broken.
“Motherfucker…” Nina spat, advancing on him with a bitter, determined purpose. I saw one of the last of the Sheriff’s Boys coming out of cover. Nina raised her rifle at him, but Dom shot first.

It was just Nina and the Sheriff now. She regarded the corpse of the last of the Sheriff’s Boys out of the corner of her eye, before making a beeline for McClellan. I watched as he tried to stand, only for his legs to give out from under him.
“Wait…” McClellan rasped, “Wait…”

Before he could say another word she’d taken aim at him and pulled the trigger, putting four more bullets into his chest.
“Shut up,” She said coldly, before turning away and going back to the church. McClellan lay on the ground, not quite dead but past the point of surviving. He twitched and wheezed out his final breaths before finally going still.

The moment Nina was through that door, she was at Milo’s side again.
“How bad is it?” She asked.
“I’ll live…” He rasped, “It’s… just a flesh wound. Help me up.”
Nina helped him stand, before looking over toward the center of the church.
“Gretchen, how’s that door looking?” She asked.
“Runes are in place… ritual circle is set, I’m almost ready!” She called back.
“Let’s go,” Nina said, dragging Milo over to the columns.

Gretchen set the bonfire alight and as we passed through the columns, I could see that the doors were open again. Faded figures of soldiers and refugees stood by anxiously. I could even see Kallas among them, pacing about with a worried look on his face. The moment he saw that the fire had started again, he looked up, seeming both relieved and even more anxious at the same time.
“I was never much good out in the field…” Milo grunted, “Should’ve stayed on the other side.”
“Don’t talk,” Nina said. “You’re still alive, right? That counts for something.”

He chuckled.
“Suppose it does,” He said.
Dom and I watched as Nina guided him toward the bonfire, then out through the right set of columns, into the version of the church where we could actually see the night sky overhead. As Nina brought Milo through, Kallas was right there to meet her.
“Take him,” She said. “He’s hurt but he’ll live so long as you patch him up right away.”
“Understood,” Kallas said, “Come on, let’s get you through and put that fire out.”

Nina just shook her head.
“No, we’ve still got work to do in here. I’ll hang back with Gretchen until we’ve confirmed that Calhoun’s dead.”
“No can do, Dr. Di Cesare ordered full quarantine measures. We need everyone out!"
“Not until we confirm the kill,” Dr. Di Cesare said. “I require someone with more experience in these things than I have. Take Mr. Durand and get him taken care of. We’ll connect with you later.”
Kallas grimaced and looked over at Milo.

“Do what she says,” He rasped, and I saw a quiet resignation cross over Kallas’ face.
“What about you two?” He asked, looking at me and Dom, “If we close this door, you’re not getting out until Valentine and the Doctor do.”
“That’s fine,” I said. “We still have unfinished business.”
Kallas just shook his head and turned to leave, letting Milo lean on him for support as he did. Milo looked back at us, or more specifically he looked back at Nina.
“Valentine…” He said, “Make me proud.”
She gave him a single nod, before letting him go.

Once she was past the columns, Dr. Di Cesare gave a single wave of her hand and the bonfire flickered and died.

The Church went dark. And we were alone again.

“Doctor, how much can you do to keep those things in Puriysk out of here?” Nina asked.
“Given ten or twenty minutes to modify some of the extant runes, quite a bit,” She replied. “It won’t be foolproof, but-”
“Just do it. Let’s dig in here, wait for the fires to die down, and see if we can’t scavenge anything from the ruins in the morning. The more we can get, the better cuz as soon as we’re set, we’re going to Parsons.”

2023.03.23 21:47 To_moon_ Lost lost lost

My baby boy is turning 10 months next week and I am finally finallllly ready to sleep train for real this time. Im just not sure how? Don’t want to do extinction. Looking for strategies/methods/tips/advice/anything.
My LO was never a good sleeper. Even in his newborn stage, he was a crappy sleeper. He was the worst at around 2-3 month where we would need to bounce him to sleep every single nap/night for 45m. He refused to be bounced for sleep one random night at around 4 months, and instead we just laid next to him (no touching). We were using his crib as a side car so he would lay at the edge of his crib and i would lay on my bed. He would usually fall asleep in less than 10m most nights. Then when he started to roll, he would roll to my side of the bed and we eventually coslept.
Last week I closed his crib in an attempt to end co sleeping and instead try room sharing. He went to sleep in his crib pretty seamlessly. Only problem is that he would wake about 3 hours later and i need to soothe him to sleep (insert paci, pat back). He would continue to wake every hour after that until i bring him next to me to sleep. Which I eventually do at around 2/3am because im so so tired of getting up every hour.
Some other info: - We have a solid sleep routine. Bath lotion jammies bottle book sleepsack prayer affirmations sleep.
Thanks everyone for reading and for your help!

2023.03.23 21:30 LastCucumber3336 Wind breaks for flower beds?

Hey ya'll, my poor flowers are taking a pretty good beating from the wind at our house. We just moved in fall of last year so this is my first spring and boy it's been relentless wind. We get one day of light breeze and then a week where gravity just doesn't exist.
What are some things I can put together like in an evening to help with wind damage? I'm pretty sure I already have some losses because of it so it needs to be a quick fix preferably. It's also getting too hot for buckets or water jugs.
I thought maybe stakes and like shade cloth, or mesh? I'd like it to be removable as well.
The flower bed is against the front of the house so trees aren't really an option right now. We do plan on planting more trees eventually, but it's not in the budget this year.
Any ideas are appreciated!

2023.03.23 21:24 Novel_Antelope_4858 [TOMT][KIDS SHOW?][Mid 2010's?] An Animated Kids Show That I Can't Remember

Please help! I've been trying to find this for so long it's tormenting.
Now I don't even know if I hallucinated this or what, but for years I've been trying to remember the name of a show with only a little memory to help me. This is what I know:
- Definitely western animation
- Saw sometime during the 2010's
- Made in Latin America (or at least I saw it when I was in Latin America)
- From what I can remember, the show stars two young kids, a boy and a girl
- Show takes place in a swamp a forest or something, somewhere remote surrounded by trees and cabins
- There are also several non-human residents that are befriended, one in particular is a friendly zombie-like character with a chainsaw arm
I know for a fact that it is not Gravity Falls, nor something relating to the Evil Dead. That's all I know.

2023.03.23 21:19 Ladeedeedeeda Car Vs Bike accident

Hi guys, so around 5 months ago my husband was involved in a bike Vs car accident He was at a stop sign at night, and tapped the back wheel of a man on a bike,- (no lights, that a law in Illinois) he did not fall of his bike but immediately starts screaming “I’m going to sue your ass, and take everything” a bunch of cuss words and threatening him My husband stays in the car and calls 911, while asking the guy if he’s okay but staying inside because he felt threatened Police arrive and the guy says he is fine, he calls his wife and then his wife tells him he needs an ambulance My husband offered to buy him a new bike, (no damage to car or bike on police report) he said no and that was the end of that, my husband did not receive a ticket or citation
Our insurance just received the claim and his attorney and him have already said what they’re offering isn’t enough
We had 25/50, I’ve upped it since then but that’s what we had at the time
We have two young boys and just bought our house and I’m worried we’ll lose everything if he makes good with his threat to sue
Obviously I want him receive everything he deserves, but I’m worried that’s a crazy amount
It didn’t help at all that when I googled the guy numerous police reports and arrests came up- hate crime, drugs charges, battery, driving with suspended license, so doesn’t sound like we’re dealing with the most reasonable guy- not judging him
Sorry about grammar typing this while dealing with my baby and stressing out
So basically should I be as worried as I am, or is our house safe? I don’t care that our premium will go up, we deserve it

2023.03.23 21:05 CaspianX2 Paper Airplane Chase for Nintendo 3DS - Review

Paper Airplane Chase

Genre: Arcade
Players: 1-2 Competitive (Same System)
.
Review:
Paper Airplane Chase actually started its life as an unlockable minigame in WarioWare Inc.: Mega Microgame$ on the Game Boy Advance in 2003. In 2009, this minigame was released separately on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service, and later grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when the Nintendo 3DS released. This is an Arcade-style game where players angle a falling paper airplane left and right, trying to get it to avoid obstacles.
The presentation here is simple but decent, using 2D pixel art visuals, with cameos from the WarioWare characters. This comes complete with their distorted voice clips from the first WarioWare game playing. Unfortunately, this game doesn’t also contain all the great music of WarioWare, instead being more relaxed and slower-paced. This works well enough for the game, but it’s not particularly exciting.
As for the gameplay, what’s here is simple, yet still compelling. You’re just turning left and right. There’s a little nuance in that the angle also determines your speed - the closer you are to pointing straight down, the faster you go. You’ll also need to keep in mind your turning radius, which will make sharper turns difficult.
The game includes an endless mode where you try to get as far as possible without crashing, a timed mode where you’re trying to get to the bottom of a set course as quickly as possible, and a 2-player competitive race where each player takes half of the Nintendo DSi/Nintendo 3DS. These are all good options, though in the end the core gameplay here remains the same.
In the end, I think Paper Airplane Chase makes for a fun little distraction, but probably not much more than that. There’s not really enough depth here to really latch onto. However, for the low price of $2, this may be worth adding to your collection. It’s an entertaining way to spend a few minutes at a time, just not much more than that.
tl;dr – Paper Airplane Chase is an Arcade-style game originally released as an unlockable minigame in the first WarioWare game. Here on its own, this is still mildly entertaining, though it lacks the depth to keep you engaged for more than a few minutes before you’re ready to move on.

2023.03.23 20:59 2B-0r-Not2B 37 [M4F] Bangalore - Looking for a Connection

Hi redditors! I am a 37 years old guy who made Bangalore my Home, and I am hoping to make a connection with a like-minded woman.
A little about me: I am separated from 6 years and I parent my son. I am an avid swimmer who can swim all 4 strokes, certified open water Suba diver, waiting to clock few more dives before going for advance certification, armature surfer and a decent badminton player. I am basically a sucker for water sports. I enjoy wine, scotch, full back, and music playing in my ears while driving into horizon on my GT 650. I am good cook with a few amazing dishes. I am an Applied data scientist, and I love my job. I enjoy watching movies, but I strictly stay away from series until unless they fall in my zone which is to the either extremes. For examples my favours being, BoJack Horseman, Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal and The Boys on one extreme and Castle and Brooklyn 99 on the other extreme. I am a foody who appreciates the quality and detail. I do not believe in any form of God other than godly nature of living beings.
The darker side of me: I am separated from 6 years and I parent my son who lives with me. I coparent my daughter who lives with her mother in another far away city. I love my kids and they are the reason I wake up every day and continue my life. I was one of those fools who believed in “having kid will fix the relationship”. We both fucked up as wife and husband but we try our best to be good parents. I had abusive childhood; alcoholic father and mother who outlet her frustration on me as I was genetically similar to my father. She at some point of time decided that I too will be addicted alcohol and had zero hopes on me. My younger sister on the other hand was exceptional in studies from the childhood and my mother’s hopes of getting out of her misery were around my sister. I subconsciously was trying to prove myself and was carving her validation which I never got till date and finally said fuck it 5 years back. My ex-wife had equally bad childhood and we both felt we will complement each other only to realized later that it was a recipe of disaster. We are like two straight lines which intersected at a single point called marriage and never again. Surprising, what traumatized more is not my failed marriage but my childhood. I have same recurring dream of my childhood which manifest in different ways. In hindsight, with my abusive childhood, I should not have married before I go a hold of my subconscious emotions and worst not an equally traumatized woman as life partner. A decade back mental health was a taboo and life was left to chance which in my case did not land well.
What I'm looking for: I am hoping to find someone who is kind, down-to-earth and non-judgemental and I promise you can expect the same from me. I bring along with me some emotional baggage but I will try my best to not burden you with it. I am neither looking for a shoulder to cry nor a sex outlet. I am just hoping to find someone with whom I am laugh along, share my happy and sad moments. If your end goal is a marriage then with a hight probability I can say that I am a wrong person. I have developed my own belief system based on my life experiences and marriage does not fall in it.
What I am not looking for: If you are below 27 years then thanks for reading up to this word, but please stop, we will have generational gap and moreover you will find tones of guys suitable for your age. If you have an iota of doubt that you might regret knowing me, then stop. If you want a sugar daddy then you will be just wasting your time with me. Last but not least, I am not a sex machine and my tool sits stable in my pants.
My height is 5.9 and I am 76Kgs. I do not smoke, I eat anything which is well cooked and tasty. I am neither left nor right but also I am not apolitical. I respect my body and it reciprocates back with no health issues till date.
I cannot promise you the world but I can promise you an experience of life time. I value relationships and I know that they have to be nurtured with care. But it is a two sided effort and I will do my best.
If you are interested in chatting and seeing if we hit it off, then please feel free to DM me. I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Adios.

2023.03.23 20:58 Sugar_Phut Eight celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan and Jake Paul, have been charged by US regulators with participating in an illegal crypto scheme

Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65046882.amp
I feel terrible for these average joe investors falling prey to these schemes over and over again. They would legit be better coming to this subreddit for financial advice.
The other celebs charged are: Musician Soulja Boy (DeAndre Cortez Way) Singer Austin Mahone Porn actress Kendra Lust (Michele Mason) Rapper Lil Yachty (Miles Parks McCollum) Musician Ne-Yo (Shaffer Smith) Senegalese-American singer Aliaune Thiam (Akon)
All of the celebrities, apart from Soulja Boy and Mahone, have paid a combined total of more than $400,000 to settle the charges.

2023.03.23 20:41 Terthelt The Adventure Zone: Balance - FIRST TIME LISTEN: "Petals To The Metal" Chapter Three

Episode 20: That's So Raven
Recap Masterlist
WE'RE BACK
Your girl returns to McElroy town! I keep swearing the crazy long waits between these recaps will end (I used to pump them out quicker so I could read the reactions on my break at work, but since losing my job, I've had a lot more available distractions), but in this case, partway through my writeup, I took a cross-state visit to spend some time with my girlfriend and did not do much interneting at all. May Big Dog have mercy on my insignificant soul.
Can't Believe They Made Elevators From Balance Real, Bravo Griff
Ad Break
Time For Things To Happen???
Post-Episode
Phew. That was... a lot. By virtue of being not a lot at all.
I can see the outline of so many cool, fun, hilarious things here: the dynamic and seemingly hopeless escape from the elevator shaft, the Raven effortlessly curbstomping our heroes with a bevy of elemental spells, the mysterious words of the halfling rescuer, etc. It's all decent conceptually. And here and there, it did bring out some solid bits from the players, though you can probably gather from the low amount of quotes that I didn't find a ton worth highlighting.
But man, this was a snooze. And I really feel like it shouldn't be, so maybe you're all pretty shocked at my poor receptiveness now that things are starting to kick into gear. Petals was supposed to be THE arc, but we're at three chapters out of ten(!), and I still feel nothing but an increasing sense of boredom and trepidation where the start of Rockport proper (as in, once they got on the train) at least kept me consistently laughing through my many problems.
If the guys didn't sound so happy and excited, it'd feel like a modern TAZ episode.

2023.03.23 20:36 hehdhdhskaieurhdbdjs Advice on big attitude in a 5 year old I want to get ahead of now

So prior to being in a relationship with my girlfriend of a little over a year I have had 0 experience with raising kids, so almost every single day there have been definite learning experiences and challenges I have come across and had to figure out, especially since she has 5 and 13 year old boys and an 8 year old girl. Currently we have been having a huge issue with her 5 year old son.
To preface, when my girlfriend is away (mostly at work) and I’m in charge things go pretty smoothly; her 5 year old listens to me and does everything I tell him to, hardly ever gives me any attitude or says anything negative, he typically wants to be around me and do things with me while also going to hang out in his room watching tv, basically I’d say he’s my little buddy. When we’re out in public he’s super shy around strangers and nice/polite to everyone he knows, to me I feel all fairly normal mannerisms for a kid his age. When his mom is around though it is a totally different story…he is mean (name calls his mom and me along with his siblings), does not listen to either of us, screams and demands until he gets his way, takes over the living room and tv from everyone refusing to be in his room (to the extent he refuses to sleep in his bed only sleeping on the couch), is destructive (IE writing on walls and things he shouldn’t, throws things and makes messes, he has even went to the extreme and peed on his sisters bed and on the couch on two random separate occasions).
Some examples from just the last two days…
Two days ago his mom worked until 11pm (so I was with the kids all day) and I picked him up from preschool, we talked about his day like normal, we went home, I got him a snack he asked for politely, we went to pick the other kids up from school (they release at different times), went home and hung out with no issues cleaning up the living room of his toys, I went and brought his mom dinner at work and he was a little upset when I got home because he didn’t realize even though I told him what I was doing that I was going to see his mom (though no meltdown, just a little frustration and he moved past it quickly), he ate most of his dinner, got right into the bath and got into his pajamas all by himself, then went to his room and watched tv until it was time to go to sleep. Pretty much a normal day with me.
Now yesterday was different since both his mom and I were off. We picked him up together from preschool and he right away told his mom he wanted a snack, grumpy and refusing to talk to us until he got a snack, so his mom and I went to a local coffee shop to get drinks and we got a brownie we all shared, then when we went back to the school to pick the other kids up (about 20 minutes early) he started yelling “it’s taking too long” after being there for 5 minutes and proceeded until the others got into the truck to go home, then at home he went into the living room and yelled at his mom (who was in the kitchen with me) to get him a snack until she brought him after a little back and forth to come out to the kitchen to get it a snack (which he will start screaming if I ever try to bring it to him), then as his mom and I were sitting in the kitchen working on finances together on the computer he came out to the table with us and began asking with further progression of frustration of when we were going to a school event of his last night when we kept telling him how long until we were leaving refusing to leave the table until the hour wait until we left. After the event at the school he began yelling at the both of us once we got to the truck that the event was stupid, telling the both of us to shut up and zip it when we tried telling him to be polite and not say mean things, which turned to screaming that he hates us and we’re the worst while we went to snag pizza for dinner, got home and he ate one square of pizza throwing a tantrum that he doesn’t want pizza anymore and that he wants something else, refusing everything we offered, demanding that he wanted a granola bar then throwing it across the room when it’s not the one he wanted, then he gets naked yelling at his mom to dress him in his pajamas refusing to take a bath, then he refuses to go to bed and falls asleep on the couch.
The way I see things, I feel after the separation from their dad (he literally up and left one day with no word and has 0 contact with them) my girlfriend went through a period she just did everything the kids wanted for the ease of taking care of them by herself with no help, which the other two kids I feel are very normal in the ways they handle themselves and live their lives for their ages and circumstances, the 5 year old basically treats his mom like a servant, is extremely mean to her and me and does not take “no” no matter how long she tries to hold out whenever she’s around, and no matter what we try to do (even to the extent of sitting him down trying to talk to him about how he acts showing him videos of how he acts while he just laughs asking us to replay parts, and me having talks with him while his mom is away about being nice and listening, which he does just fine when she isn’t around) nothing ever works. In my inexperienced eyes it’s almost as if he just doesn’t realize what he is doing whenever she is around, that it’s just a part of his internal makeup even, like he can throw an absolute horrible tantrum whenever she’s around, then when he realizes she left the house it’s a flip of a switch he is perfectly fine, like nothing ever happened. And I don’t feel he does it for his mom’s attention since normally when we’re all together nobody gets ignored or overlooked, we typically are all together.
Any guidance can help, we don’t know if it would be best to try to take him to see a pediatric counselor when he never talks around strangers and is extremely shy, and I have no clue if this is just his terrible two’s phase going on as a 5 year old since she said this only started right before I first came around and has gotten worse since December.

2023.03.23 20:33 Jefferybeene [SOMC] - State of My Crap

[SOMC] - State of My Crap
After seeing the 'Perfect Box' post one too many times I had enough, so here we go.
PIC 1
Top Row, L to R
Hamilton Khaki King champagne dial
  • Bought because I liked it and wanted a Hamilton not in a movie. Leather strap was too short so I ordered something off Amazon that’s not here yet because of whatever, so I threw it on a strap I had lying around. Lume sucks but I like the day/date thing.
Seiko SKX009J
  • Bought it and wife (how many watches do you NEED?) wasn’t happy so I said I’d give it to her and get it back when I lost 20 pounds. Took two years but that happened, threw it on a Strapcode oyster band. Wear it a lot because the lume is sweet.
Seiko Recraft
  • Looked cool online. It’s decent but I just don’t wear it as much, honestly probably less than a half dozen times. Got it cheap online so not worried about MY INVESTMENT.
Seiko Field SK9090lij9089080ijlkjl
  • Whatever it’s a Seiko Field watch, which I honestly wear a ton. Decent lume, too. Ok, I looked it up, SNZG15 or something like that.
Seiko Flightmaster
  • Beat to hell and still going. No clue when I bought it, but at least ten years ago. Serviced never. Wore it for years and still break it out every now and then. Threw on the leather strap because the bracelet was falling apart and nasty. Probably should throw the bracelet in one of those pans with the stuff they use to clean engine parts.
Orient Bambino Version Whatever
  • It’s an inexpensive dress watch that I wear on very rare occasions. Band’s kinda iffy.
Bottom Row, L to R
Swatch Skeleton
  • Hey it’s a Swatch, I’ve always loved Swatches. Had some back in the 80’s. And cool it’s a skeleton. Is it cheap? It is! BUY NOW. Fact: telling time on this is a pain in the ass. Rarely wear this. Still cheaper than a Richard Mille and just about as readable.
Swatch New Gentrification or something
  • Legible. Cheap. Easy to read. 80’s nostalgia. Ticks so loud I can possibly hear it in another state.
Vostok Der Kommisar or Commander or whatever
  • It’s yellow. It’s a Vostok. It was cheap. I was drunk and ordered it online. The rubber strap that came with it was epically bad so I put it on this other strap that was lying around. The watch that also made me wonder if the crown would fall off when I went to set it.
G-Shock
  • It’s a green G-Shock.
Orient Kamasu
  • Honestly one of the watches I’ve worn the most. Put it on the SKX’s rubber strap because I wondered how it’d look and haven’t bothered to put back the bracelet. Pretty sure the Seiko Police are en route.
Victorinox INOX
  • Gift from my wife, a very thick watch. Band clasp is fiddly, but once it’s on wears great. Craptastic lume, tho. Wear it a lot because I like it AND it reminds me of my wife. Oh, and it looks cool in the sunlight.
PIC 2
L to Right-ish
Apple Watch 3
  • Mostly wear it now when I exercise, which means it hasn’t been charged in months because I’m lazy.
Timex Weekender
  • Gift from my Mom. Still a damn classic and the indiglo thing is perfect at the movies.
Nautis Cheap-Ass Dive watch
  • Hoo boy was this a damn mistake. Friend said to try Watch Gang so I did and got this. Heavy as hell and I have no idea why as when the battery needed replaced the insides are filled with plastic and air. Canceled that crap really quickly. What a scam.
Ted Baker watch
  • Gift from my wife, and yeah it’s a fashion watch but it’s got a pretty decent face, thin as hell and I’ll never get rid of it. Even if I know she paid way too much vs. what it’s actually worth.
Mil-Tec Fleiger watch
  • Another late night, what the hell purchase. Big watch and I’ve only worn it a few times. Think it was under a hundred bucks. And hey, for a few bucks there's some Luftwaffe history for you! Again, alcohol involved.

2023.03.23 20:29 pastelecakekurain Colorburst (Geiju's backstory Part 1)

~Hello there! This is something that I've been working on for a while and I wanted to share it with you all!
-Warning: Crappy writing.
"Sweetie" Kiyomi watched Geiju eat his strawberry ice cream. "Try to talk with him, perhaps he'll say a thing or two" She remembered her sister's words, She knew the possibility was unlikely but it was worth a try. "Is that Good?" Geiju took another bite, finished, and gave his mother a curious look. "All done?" He waited a bit, looked back at his empty cone, and nodded slowly.
She took it from him and tossed it in the trash. Geiju hopped down from his spot on the bench and started flapping his hands, he looked very content and pleased. "Excuse me, Mam, why is he doing that?" A little girl's voice spoke. Kiyomi turned to the little girl but not before the girl's mother grabbed her and walked away, with a look of discomfort. "How shameful, Why is his mother letting him do that?" an old woman said to her friend, loudly.
Kiyomi looked back at her son, Who was still hand flapping, and to her left hand. "Geiju, It's time to go to the doctor" She picked him up and they went on their merry way. He could understand Kiyomi perfectly, As any other child could, But he just couldn't speak at all, He was 4 but couldn't talk, not a word. She was worried for her baby, so she decided to take him to The local Pediatrician: Azuma Kaga.
Kiyomi watched Geiju play with building blocks, Arranging the blocks into a straight line. "Geiju Baba?" the nurse called out. "Geiju" he looked up from his block line. "It's time" He got up and waddled over to the nurse. "Hi, there!" The nurse chirped, kneeling to Geiju's level. "My name is Naomi Tsumeato! Just Follow me!" Geiju looked unamused by her but followed close after.
"You said Geiju can't talk even though He's four years old?" the doctor asked. Kiyomi sighed. "Yes....And he exhibits strange behavior at home and his preschool, like rocking back and forth and flapping his hands". Doctor Azuma eyed the young boy in the side of the room, who had gotten up and was looking at a psychology book, and surely enough, He was rocking back and forth.
"Not even simple words like mommy or daddy?" "No, Nothing at all" Azuma looked back at his notes.
" We'll have to look further into it..." She looked back at Kiyomi. " but I think Geiju is autistic." Kiyomi looked at her son and turned her head back. "Autistic?" "Yes, Autistic, I think the best course of action is to put him in cognitive behavioral therapy to improve his social skills." Azuma leaned close to Kiyomi, softening his voice.
"It will be a difficult journey but........" Geiju got up and walked back to his chair, Making eye contact with the doctor, who gave him a small smile. "Im sure he's going to turn out to be a very bright boy, Autism is a spectrum, which means an enormous range of ways it can manifest in your son" Kiyomi looked at her son, who gave her a toothy grin, she smiled with hope.
Naomi led them out and they went into the waiting room, it was filled with children who seemed to be acting out their little worlds. "Geiju, It's time to go home" Kiyomi held her son's hand, and he looked up at her. "Yes, It's time to go home!" Kiyomi said, picking up her son and saying goodbye to Naomi.
As they exited the clinic, A strong wind blew and the clouds were dark and heavy. Kiyomi still loved her son, why would she hate him for something that was out of his control, no, the thing she worried about was how Her husband would react, She knew how he felt about disabled people and she was fully ready to divorce him if she needed to.
She got home and took Geiju to the living room, and sat him down. "Geiju, Daddy will be home soon and I'll tell him what the doctor said, I'm sure he'll be understanding once we explain it to him, Im sorry but I have to tell him, it's best to get it out in the open.." She ruffled his red hair and kissed him on the forehead. She turned and put on Cardcaptor sakura Dvd and put on the first episode. "Why don't you watch some Tv" The minute geiju heard the opening song, he smiled and turned his full attention to the cute anime girls.
Kiyomi stood on the patio, looking outside at the dark clouds, she was still thinking about how to break it to her husband, but she knew she had to, Her son was in the living room, watching Tv. "I hope he doesn't get too angry" She mumbled, quietly, as she watched Shoichi start to come into view. "Kiyomi...What was Geiju's diagnosis?" He asked, not even bothering to kiss her or say Honey I'm home, It stung slightly in her heart but she stayed strong, Geiju needed her.
"The doctor told me he has autism" Shoichi frowned. "What? Are you sure? are you sure that the doctor didn't misdiagnose him? Im not raising a retard" he asked, anger in his voice. "yes, the doctor said he was Autistic, If.....you don't like that........... You can leave" Kiyomi tried to hold onto herself but she couldn't keep from crumbling in front of him, Like every time she tried to file for divorce but his threats of Violence would but his threats for violence would shut her up, but she wasn't going to be like that, not today, today she would put her foot down. "If you don't want to raise your son, Im going to take care of him' He opened his mouth to speak but she spoke first. "This marriage is over, Im calling a lawyer tomorrow, I'll give you time to pack your things but you will not be living in this house".
"Fine" Shoichi walked in the front door to the bedroom to pack his things. Kiyomi went back inside, feeling relieved, She was free for now. She went back into the living room to check on geiju. He was still where she had left him but now he was coloring. She smiled. "Geiju, What are you drawing?" He looked at her and showed her. He looked at her and showed her. It was a picture of a starry night sky, it was surprisingly well-drawn, especially by a 4-year-old. "Geiju.....This is wonderful!" She gushed, She was impressed, she was always so busy, why had she never noticed her son's talent?
"Im leaving" Shoichi called out, carrying bags. Kiyomi sighed and helped him out the door. "Are you sure you want to do this?' He asked. Kiyomi nodded. "You said you did not want to raise a "Retard" you can go to a hotel or your mother's house" Shoichi scoffed and left.
That night was one of the tiring nights of Kiyomi's life. She was sitting on the couch calling her sister and divorce lawyers She went into the kitchen and made coffee, then Geiju wet the bed and came to her crying. "It's ok" she reassured him, as he cried. She pulled the soiled sheets from the bed. After that was settled, she put him back to bed and fell asleep on the couch.
The divorce went smoothly and Kiyomi packed up her and Geiju"s bags and moved to Brauza town, A homely seaside town.
-
'Darling!" Kiyomi cried out from the kitchen. "Y-es mam?" Geiju stammered out, peeking from behind the wall. She smiled gently as she wiped her hands on her apron and kneeled to her son's eye line. "Geiju, We're making Hamburg curry today" she watched geiju get visibly giddy, Hamburg curry was his favorite food. Kiyomi quickly stood up, grabbed a small Crocheted purse, and put it around geiju.
"But we are out of Shiso herbs, Auntie is coming over for dinner" "Auntie Mari?" "Yes, I want you to go to the 7-11 to buy Shiso herbs, Mommy has to stay here to make sure the curry doesn't burn"
She had called the next-door neighbor, a very homely woman named Ryoba Aishi, who also had a child Geiju's age, to watch Geiju, Just to make sure he would be safe.
"Mommy?" Geiju asked as he put on his shoes. 'Yes?" "C-an, I bu...y a c-ake?" She smiled and nodded, which, made Geiju grin. 'You made lots of progress at speech therapy today!" She helped tie his laces. "You deserve some cake" "St-raw-berry?" "Yes, Strawberry"
"Bye, Bye" Geiju skipped and his hand flapped with excitement. He avoided touching the purse as much as possible, It felt strange and too spikey. It was a pretty purse that was shaped like a tangerine but he liked the silky and soft strawberry purse that Auntie Mari had bought him the last time she came by, He wondered why she liked Shiso herbs so much, They tasked bad anyways. He spotted the next-door lady, Who wore lots of Purple and had her long black hair in a messy bun. She spotted him and gave him a wave. Mom had taught him to wave back, so he did.
The lady walked next to him, tittering softly about her husband, how wonderful he was, and how her daughter was "Just like him" So mature and responsible, You would love to meet her! They, Eventually, reached the 7-11, the lady bid him farewell and walked off into the store.
He approached the counter, and the cashier looked at him. "Do you need help?" the man's mood softened noticeably, now having a bright smile that was being faked. Geiju also noticed a white tag on the man's chest, reading "Yuiko Tamanaha" with "They, them" written below the name. What did that mean? He wasn't sure and that wasn't important, The shop was nice and quiet, Just how he liked it, Most stores were too loud for him, so the 7-11 was perfect.
"S-hi-Shiso h-eee-rbs and St-raw-berry short-ca-ke plea-se" He stammered out. Yuiko led him to the Shiso herbs, which cost 398 ¥, and Strawberry shortcake, that cost 134 ¥. He had a lot left, So he bought a pack of Banana, Strawberries, Blueberries, and Yuzu Mochi, that cost about 100 ¥, A pack of Strawberry Yakult yogurt, which cost one measly yen coin, and a box of Itoen Oi Ocha Instant Green Tea, That cost about 25.00 ¥. He had memorized all of the costs, Auntie Mari had left a small coral red and sky blue striped notebook that had all of the of costs 7-11 products. How she did it, He had absolutely no clue.
He walked up to the cashier, who was talking with a boy with short maroon hair, wearing a light blue shirt and a pair of green overalls. The boy turned to him and grinned. "Oh, Hi!" The boy waved, and Geiju recognized the boy: Shouko Tsuburaya, one of his classmates from elementary school. Unlike him, the boy was tall and stood up straight, He always had a smile on his face, bringing joy into whatever room he walked in.
Shouko chattered away as Geiju paid for his food. "Oh, Are those Shiso herbs? My dad loves them!" He was slightly bothered by him, Evident by his tapping left foot. Shouko followed him on the way out, still chatting with him. "Can we be friends?" "Fri-en-ds?" "Yeah, friends! you seem nice!"
He thought about it for a bit, Friends? He liked Shouko but he talked a lot, maybe this was how friends are supposed to be? He grinned and rocked side to side in delight. "OK!"
"Did you know my friend's birthday is coming up soon?" "Bi-r-th-day?" "Yeah, her birthday is next Tuesday! Im making a cake with her!" "Wh-a-ts-her n-ame?" He watched a light pink blush creep up Shouko's cheeks. "Uh...Amai odayaka, Shes one of the First graders........Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (Hes completely red in the face, How cute) You know......The one with long light brown hair that's tied in the end with a green frill ribbon and Pretty green eyes that look like little emeralds~" Shouko dreamily put his hands to his chest. "And she has long slender legs, soft pudgy skin, and a really nice voice" (Somebody's been watching way too much Clannad, like boi, you are 8, chill)
*It's like Sakura"s love for Yukito...* Geiju thought. "I-s-s-he cute?" "Yeah!" The two walked to Geiju"s house, Geiju became very happy when he saw his aunt's black car in the driveway. "Aun-tie Ma-ri!" He called out as he opened the door, barely kicking off his shoes as he jumped into Mari's arms, her dark red hair was pulled back in a messy pony, just like it was last time.
“Hey there Gei-chu! How are you doing?” Mari laughed, Spinning around with him in her arms. Auntie Mari was different from Mommy In many ways. They had the same eye and hair color, But Mommy was short and wore long dresses and skirts and Mari was tall and wore Overalls and tank tops instead. She was loud, but he could bear it.
Kiyomi turned her attention to Shouko, who held out the bag of groceries. “Oh, hello there! What's your name?” She made her way to him, kneeling to match his eye level.
“My name is Shouko Tsuburaya!” he grinned as he shook her hand. Kiyomi looked into the bag. “He got all of them......Even some tea” She got up and gave geiju a pat on the head.
“Good job!” Geiju smiled very widely as he rocked side to side. Shouko looked at the clock and sighed.
“Oh, it’s 5:20! I have to go soon, or dad will be mad at me.” He frowned, gripping his shopping bag tightly. “Why don’t we invite him here?” She eyed Kiyomi, Who nodded.
“That sounds good! Can I call him?” “Sure!” He and Mari made their way to the telephone, Kiyomi rolled up her sleeves, Always, the routine to dinner is the same, but today it was slightly different, As Shouko was here. Geiju drew some pictures as shouko tittered on. “Oh, that looks interesting!”
The doorbell rang suddenly, the doorbell never failed to make Geiju startle a bit. “Must be my dad!” Shouko exclaimed, Kiyomi screamed for Mari to take over the steak and leaped for the door.
“S- Takehiro barely got a syllable out before Kiyomi tackled him to the floor, with a loud thud. “OH GOODNESS IM SORRY!” She cried out as she got off from on top of him.
“Mommy!” Geiju ran over and started crying. “Oh no!” Shouko scurried over to his father, Helping him up. “Oh, for crying out Loud Sister, this is giving me flashbacks from high school. Your days of knocking people to the ground are supposed to be over, aren't they?” Mari cried out from the kitchen.
“Gah-Ah, It's Alright, I've gone through worse...” Takehiro groaned as he adjusted himself, patting down his ruffled police Uniform. Shouko turned his attention to Geiju, calming him down.
“There, there” He was rubbing circles on his back. “It's ok now!” The noise in his ears began to clear up. An arm wrapped around Him, while a hand combed through his hair.
“Oh, god” Kiyomi mumbled, Mari walked over, Shouko’s father looked a lot like him, Similar hair type and same smile, however he had solid brown hair and orange eyes. He looked a lot like one of her and Kiyomi’s classmates in their second year of high school. Then she realized.
“TAKEHIRO?!” Mari ran into the house and came back out again, holding a picture. She pointed to the boy next to a teenaged Kiyomi, it was him, but slightly fatter.
“Oh, oh my” Kiyomi gasped turning to Takehiro, she had somewhat interacted with him back when they were in Hashimoto principal high school, He sat in the back of the class and never seemed to interact much with anybody, so she didn't think much after he transferred schools.
But now, His once plump, fat body had been replaced with Muscle and he wore the town’s Police uniform with a Gun on his holster. He looked handsome now, that’s what Kiyomi thought. She felt a slight blush creep on her face as he helped calm down geiju She shook her head; He was probably married to a very lucky woman; it would be horrible to try and flirt with a married man.
“Crap the curry!” Mari ran back inside, and Geiju and Shouko followed suit, Leaving Kiyomi and Takehiro alone. She smiled awkwardly, something that Takehiro always liked. Even back when he was in high school, He always liked walking close to her on his way to school, about five meters away from the Scarlet short-haired beauty, making sure she didn't fall back down the school's hellish tall stairs to the entrance (Sounds creepy, but true, she did fall down the staircase on the first day of school)
“So....Uh...How's it been?” he asked nervously, a little surprised by his sudden nervousness. “Alright......Geiju’s having a little trouble with his math grades and My ex-husband has dropped off the face of the earth” Kiyomi sighed, shaking her head.
“Ahh...That’s rough” he said, why was his heart beating faster than a cheetah?" “Sometimes I wonder if Geiju misses his father....” Kiyomi sighed, sounding quite Mechalonic. “You know... I wonder that too” He sighed, reaching into his left pocket and pulling out a picture.
A picture of a young woman with long, curled hair, her hair was such a dark shade of red it almost looked brown, bangs curled up to not hide her stunning green eyes that seemed to kiss in the corners. She was smiling gently, posed with her right arm obscured from view. She wore a dark brown and white sailor uniform so Kiyomi assumed it was a yearbook photo. at the bottom of the picture was small text reading: “Tao Etō”
“Is this your wife?” she asked, slightly intimidated by her beauty. Takehiro’s face had borne a somewhat pained expression. “She was popular, she could have befriended anybody..........But she chose me, A chubby loner” He murmured. “She was very kind, graceful........and very sick girl......” Kiyomi connected the dots.
“I'm....so sorry” “I was holding Shouko in my arms... She told me not to cry” His voice broke a bit. Kiyomi could only hug him as he sobbed at the bitter memories. Takehiro felt like Tao was in his arms again, that’s why he was so nervous. Both would nurture these new feelings, to make this little sprout bloom into a beautiful flower.
Mari watched; her plan had worked. She turned over to the hammer in her purple purse.
“Shoichi.........Shes happy now, cry about it”

[Anti-Christ heroin speaking to Christ cocaine]
There is a light (Red 1) in the forest (White 4)
There is a face (Blue 2) in the tree (Grey 5)
I'll pull (Grey 5)
you out (White 4) of the chorus (Blue 2)
And the first one's (Blue 2) always free (White 4)

You can never go (Grey 5) hunting (Grey 5)
With just (White 4)
a flintlock (Grey 5) and a hound (Grey 5)
You won't go (White 4)
home (Grey 5) with a bunting (White 4)
If you blow (White 4) a hundred rounds (Grey 5)

It takes (Grey 5)
much more (White 4) than wild courage (Grey 5)
Or you'll hit (Grey 5)
just the (White 4) tattered clouds (White 4)
You must have (Grey 5)
just the right (White 4) bullets (Grey 5)
And the first one's (Blue 2) always free (White 4)

You must be (White 4)
careful (White 4) in the forest (White 4)

2023.03.23 20:26 sapphicmage No boys allowed Genealogy Theorycrafting

A little while back I talked about which games could be possible using only female characters and ever since then I can’t stop thinking about trying one of the older games with it. Namely, Genealogy of the Holy War. It’s one of the theoretically harder ones, with Ethlyn being your only option for the prologue and the first part of chapter before Ayra (Edain joins slightly before, but cannot deal damage). And yet…I think it can be done. It would take a lot inventory planning and careful resource management and a whole lot of luck but it should be possible. Once I finish New Mystery, I want to give it a shot.
We also need to clearly define what the men can and cannot do. The goal is to have it be as much of a girls only run as possible, but we can’t completely have the men do nothing. Some of them will have no choice but to see combat and others are required to recruit women.
Men can:
⁃ Talk to people. Important for recruitment, boosting the stats of some women, and giving/getting items for the women to use ⁃ See combat IF they do not have a weapon equipped. An unfortunately necessary allowance with the starting positions of certain units (Dew and Lewyn come to mind). That said, it should not be abused (ie putting a wall of unarmed men between a woman and enemies) ⁃ Fall in love. This will be challenging enough without also making it substitutes only. Besides, Ethlyn and Deirdre already have lovers so there’s no need to restrict the others ⁃ Give their money to their lover. Not much different than talking and it won’t be a big sum (since they can’t fight to earn more), but it still belongs to the wives.
Potentially:
⁃ Do map events (like Lex’s Brave Axe event). I’m on the fence on this one but it isn’t all that dissimilar to talking for items. Either way, they aren’t using it themselves. ⁃ Purchase items. Another one I’m unsure of, but Brigid not passing her inventory on to Patty is a problem. She’ll have a hard enough time surviving her join chapter without a little help in her inventory
Men cannot:
⁃ Deal damage. Anything to do with fighting other than completely unavoidable “you start in the enemy’s range” type deals ⁃ Visit villages. They didn’t save them so they don’t get the reward. ⁃ Take castles. See above.
So what are the obstacles here? Once both generations get going it should be perfectly manageable. It’s those early chapters that cause the most problems since both generations will have to start as solos.
Gen 1: Ethlyn
You’ll have to wait for Ethlyn to show up before you can do anything. It might mean unequipping everyone and just sitting there until turn three.
The good:
⁃ the slim sword is actually pretty decent??? 8 might isn’t incredible but it’s 3 in most other games ⁃ She has a horse! ⁃ Holy blood means she has an A rank in swords so she can take Sigurd’s silver sword, which she can afford with a village or her husband’s money ⁃ She gets a fantastic +6 strength on promotion ⁃ Critical ability plus bonds with Sigurd and Quan to help her combat ability
The bad:
⁃ starts at level 1 ⁃ Very fragile ⁃ Very meh growths ⁃ No pursuit ⁃ Still has to solo the chapter ⁃ You’ll put all this effort into building her only for her to leave in chapter 4 ⁃ She passes her inventory down to her son, not her daughter
She’ll have to solo all of the prologue. Edain joins at the beginning of chapter 1, but has no means of attacking. That means Ayra is the next unit get, and she’ll be tough to recruit. Hopefully Ethlyn will snowball from the paralogue, otherwise this will be very rough. If you can make it to getting Ayra, the rest of gen 1 shouldn’t be an issue. There is a big question though: who do we pair? Optimal pairings are going to look a lot different when you’re only trying to optimize one character.
Edain: Lana has zero use for strength so a magic dad is the way to go. Claude seems like the best option for a higher staff rank. Helps Edain pass down better staffs too. Definitely a low priority child though…she’ll keep the others alive but she’s not likely to be a big damage dealer.
Ayra: Lex or Dew look like the best options for helping Larcei in the early parts of gen 2 with paragon and sol. I might make the very controversial decision to keep Ayra unpaired though. I prefer Creidne and the early part of gen 2 doesn’t look too bad using just her and Lana, and you get Julia and Fee very quickly. A good Larcei would make things a lot easier though.
Lachesis: I’m very unsure here. Nanna’s strength is surprisingly impressive, but she also wants magic for healing and pursuit to double. Leaning towards Lewyn for balance, maybe a full physical dad instead.
Sylvia: Really shouldn’t matter. Lene shouldn’t see combat and no skills are a must have. It’s what Sylvia can put in her inventory that’s most important.
Erinys: another one I’m unsure of. Jamke gives nice balanced stats while Lex gives her amazing defense plus paragon and vantage (and if I’m not using Lex elsewhere she might be the best option).
Tailtiu: Azelle by a mile. Best magic, good speed, and pursuit. It’s still unfortunate that Tine can’t ever inherit Thoron but she’ll get it eventually.
Brigid: Holyn gives her Luna and B swords at base while Dew gives her Sol and slightly better Attack and Speed. Patty’s in a very difficult situation: she inherits her father’s items and not her mother’s. And since we’re not using fathers…..both start with a good amount of gold though so if we allow the boys to purchase items they might be able to pass down something useful to her (especially Dew…15,000 gold plus the bargain skill is big).
Really in Gen 2 I think the biggest issue will be keeping Patty alive. Starting with Lana plus Larcei/Creidne makes the start of gen 2 a lot easier, and you pick up Fee and Julia quickly.
Any pairing recommendations? Problem parts I’m not thinking about? Rules that need to be adjusted? Concerns about my sanity for considering this?
