2023.03.23 22:08 OhmoebaTheGamer Having trouble meeting people? Are you a gamer, a geek, a nerd, or a cosplayer?

Hey Everett folks! I know there are at least a hundred or so of you who hang in this subreddit that are already a part of the community I came here to post about, but since I'd never posted in here before, I figured there might be a few people who were still unaware this existed, so thought I'd pop in!
If you're into gaming, nerd culture, or other geeky types of stuff, I highly recommend hopping into the Rolling Bones Discord server and linking up with other folks who live in the region like ourselves. They accept members from the Everett area, Bellevue & Redmond (or the "Eastside" as they call it) Seattle, Tacoma, and as far south as Olympia. Some reasons why I like it so much:
  1. Video gamers in here are *very* active in actually playing games with one another. Some of the really popular titles we play right now (and are hosted through the server itself): A. 7 Days to Die B. Minecraft C. Project Zomboid D. Valheim E. World of WarCraft F. League of Legends G. Final Fantasy XIV H. Stellaris/EU4/HOI4/CK3 (Grand Strategy Games, basically) (Sidenote: I would *love* to find more people to play DayZ with on PC, personally)
  2. They have meetups and people *actually* show up. Sometimes these crowds get to be larger than 50 at the 'big' bi-monthly meetups in Seattle, but we have others that go on(one in Everett, for instance on Mondays!) in local spots. These groups usually either get together for tabletop board games, TTRPGs, MtG, or just to grab some beers, hang out and shoot the breeze. We go to concerts together, to movies, etc. If you're a transplant here, this is a great way to find your first group of friends in the city, everyone's very welcoming and friendly, even the shy ones among us :)
  3. It's a healthy social environment - the topics tend to stay on non-controversial issues, as bad as it gets is a debate over which is the best Spiderman game or something - no politics are allowed, but it's a VERY inclusive place, everyone's welcome "except for assholes" as we put it, there's every race, color, sexual orientation, gender, etc in here. Speaking of gender - the ratio is roughly half male/half female with quite a few folks who identify as neither - so it's pretty balanced in terms of membership. (I think there's even an all-ladies brunch club that they have, actually)
  4. They even have prizes and giveaways sometimes, and I hear they're even working on some cool art for tee shirts and stickers and such, so it's a really cool vibe, feels more like you're getting into a big club of friends rather than just strangers on the internet.
  5. It's active! There's over 1,500 people in there now, chatting, planning meetups, BBQs, I think there's even a house party that folks are planning, there's talks of a gathering up at Golden Gardens, ever since Spring started rolling around people really got active in the events forums and it stayed going on all winter-long as well. It's aliiiiiiive.
I don't know if it's allowed to post the link to the Discord on here yet, so just drop a comment if you'd like to get an invite! :)
"Let's roll some bones, sometime" as they say :D

2023.03.23 21:20 tonnie_taller Ohio Senate passes $13.5B transportation budget, includes tighter rail safety rules

Ohio senators reacting to the East Palestine train derailment proposed state oversight of wayside detectors that can spot railway defects, among other safety provisions, in a nearly $13.5 billion transportation budget that passed Thursday with bipartisan support. The proposal will now go to a joint House and Senate conference committee to work out differences, with … Continue reading Ohio Senate passes $13.5B transportation budget, includes tighter rail safety rules

Windwail Highland's Forgotten Settlement

THIS IS PART 3 I FORGOT TO ADD IT TO THE TITLE AND I OF COURSE CAN'T CHANGE THAT NOW THAT IT'S POSTED

BEFORE WE START PLEASE AT LEAST READ PART 1 BEFORE READING THIS PART, I DON'T WANT TO ANSWER QUESTIONS I'VE ALREADY ANSWERED AND IT PROVIDES A LOT OF BACKGROUND

Part 1
Part 2

Residential Complex:

The final area is highlighted below in yellow
Residential Complex Approximate Area
This area was likely residential in nature as it has both the largest area and the most ruins within. The majority of these ruins are indicative of small structures, something likely to be a house. It also has the remains of cobbled pathing, something not seen in the other two areas. Exact details about the pathing can be seen below.

Path Remains:

This area of the Windwail ruins has the unique feature of the remains of cobbled paths. An example of which can be seen below.
Cobble remains
Little of the actual cobble used for the path remains visible. The reason it’s still a path lies in the cobbles that are likely buried underground. These cobbles prevent plant growth by both draining water out of the area much faster than soil, but also giving plants less space to put down roots. As a result the ground from the path remains barren. These paths also give a much clearer demarcation of where exactly the various structures in this area were located.

Map:

Due to the large and spread out nature of this area I’m going to have to do things a little differently. Below is a map of the area with every ruin marked and labeled. As such locations will only be described on the map and not in the ruins descriptions as was done before.
Part 3 covers ruins 1-9 while part 4 will cover 10-21.
Key:Clovers: Path markers for my own self reference
Stars: Ruin Locations
Red Line: Approximate path locations
https://preview.redd.it/8gcusmj6ejpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=c6fe015a7eee13af6d617ae6fbbc83ce6fce1726
Ruin #1:
Angle 1
Angle 2
This is undeniably a building of some sort. The north eastern wall is almost entirely complete and the space the building occupied is easily discernible as 3 of its 4 corners still survive. The floor was likely tiled because of the presence of a barren path of soil within its perimeter. The arch seen on the far right in both angles was almost certainly a doorway arch as it would line up nicely with the path remnants this ruin is connected to. Its location just outside the main bulk of the ruins leads me to believe that this building was likely used for storage or gatherings. The use as a storage facility would explain the small path remains between it and Ruin #4. This is because such a location would be visited frequently, but nowhere near as often as a home. The lack of cobbling on this path further supports this as it was likely not important enough to require such technology and special attention.
Ruin #2:
https://preview.redd.it/i20rhg3yejpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=d34b74228804c20827d2ab13da3f21c30d6c4719
The ruins in the background is another one of the inverted arches and the one in the foreground is likely the remains of a pillar. I believe that this particular ruin was intentionally buried at some point in the past. My evidence for this is the unusual rise in the ground that the inverted arch sits on, as well as the fact that the left side of said inverted arch has been almost totally exposed. It seems unlikely that natural soil would erode like that. Additionally there is likely the remains of another floor as seen from the large barren spot. The pillar appears to be a much cruder version of the pillars found around the religious complex as it is made of four smaller columns combined to make one big one. Overall it’s likely a building stood here, what kind of building I don’t know as the inverted arch remains a mystery to me.
Ruin #3:
https://preview.redd.it/p140677lfjpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=a04ea01f42aa76c2826d0a94f27fa6780765c1e7
The ruins in the background of this picture are undeniably that of an arch. The pillar in the foreground's purpose is unknown and not enough survives to delineate a purpose. I believe this arch to have served a decorational purpose. Sort of like a welcome to the city monument. I say this because it sits upon raised ground compared to the path going through the main area. It sits in the perfect place to show off the prosperity of the settlement to visitors. This is further backed by there being no signs of cobbling/flooring near it, making it unlikely that it ever supported a roof.
Ruin #4:
https://preview.redd.it/wergab70gjpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=14c7dbd56e80a680eecd2d91d19830ac93e3f87b
This seems to be the remains of another arch of some kind as seen from the curved bricks on the right side. Curiously this ruin lies directly next to another example of the unmarked stonework seen in the last part. This could have been a part of an arch over a path as it is very close to the path remains that lead to Ruin #1. But it’s one of those ruins that exists in a too incomplete state to really be sure. The purpose of the unmarked stone column also remains a mystery as I can think of no real purpose for such a small column being located there.
Ruin #5:
https://preview.redd.it/1mn96p7hgjpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=a945cd39650323c78a7a2ebbd56c6e9c431b0262
Once again we have the ruins of an arch of some kind. This one seems to be partially buried meaning it is likely much longer than what we can see. Interestingly it has a small patch of barren ground to the left of where it has fallen even though it would have originally been standing up a fair distance away from that patch. Although that path could exist for entirely natural reasons such as not getting enough sun. I’m leaning for towards it being a natural occurrence because this arch remnant would fit in very nicely with Ruin #6.
Ruin #6:
https://preview.redd.it/wsqunabvgjpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee5ba5eb6b1c06571950954760005ea173e5707b
Another arch remnant comes in as Ruin #6. This ruin is almost totally buried but luckily the curved part of the arch just barely remains above ground. I see it as highly likely that this arch was a part of the same structure as Ruin #5. If you follow a straight line from where the column section of the arch likely is, it puts you pretty close to where Ruin #5 likely originally stood. The reason the arch in #6 is facing the opposite direction to #5 is either because A: These two ruins were different arches within the same structure, or B: One of them twisted to face the wrong way when it collapsed. The structure they may have once been a part of is long long gone. Thus knowing what they were used for shall remain unknown.
Ruin #7:
https://preview.redd.it/y8rn9l2bhjpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=42e3156ef2724fa47c080af49d5c891447f8b504
This ruin is the first one here that I believe could have been a personal residence of some description. I say this as it is located close to the main (and cobbled) path, shows signs of a foundation, and said foundation is not very large in size. Behind the ruin on its left side (most of it is hidden by a rock in this image) there is another column of unmarked stone. This column's proximity to a marked ruin makes me think that it was at one point a part of the same structure. This is further backed by the fact that if you approximate where it would have stood before falling it lines up almost perfectly with the edge of the barren soil. Why those bricks are unmarked is unknown. A possible explanation could be habitation by a different civilization after the original fell in this area. Finally, some of the barren ground in this area looks like it directly connects to the main path, leading me to believe that this building also had a pathway leading up to it, something that is only otherwise seen in Ruin #1.
Ruin #8:
https://preview.redd.it/ztmvaezjhjpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c62ac52f82e87c4752bce9f2bf13243b0ff76a0
This ruin consists of the small pillar seen in the center of the image, as well as a fallen column of unmarked stone on the left. It sits very close to the main cobbled path but does not have any indication of having been part of a structure at any point. It’s possible this column existed for entirely decorational purposes due to its proximity to the main path. Or maybe it’s what remains of a gazebo or something similar for people to relax outside in. There’s simply too little left of whatever it was to make a solid guess. The unmarked stone on the other hand, seems to be a part of the stone it lays upon. This implies that someone was carving it out of the stone from the cliff. Or this is just a dev error. I’m leaning more towards badly placed asset than having a meaning.
Ruin #9:
https://preview.redd.it/yf0cntethjpa1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=891f62cc0bb5d42d44ba936a02edd6d9b9bbbf79
This ruin is a rather large column of unmarked stone sitting right next to the main path. On its right sits a pile of large stones. It feels like these stones may have once been a part of whatever the column was used for. I say this because these stones block what would have been the probable path leading to Ruin #7. It feels unlikely that stones would just be put in the way of a path without having some sort of use. Maybe they were once paving stones, or part of a garden, or even just purely for decoration. Or maybe they came to be there after this civilization fell. This is all just speculation after all.

That concludes part 3. I thank you for your patience as I writing these out is sort of a little passion project. However I have ADHD, which means that I can only write in short bursts about once a day. I want to say sorry for the repeated use of the same syntax but each of these ruins are written as basically a separate analysis and there's only so many words in English to describe certain things. Part 4 will be out whenever it's done (likely a week or so). Until then I hope this is of interest.-The hopefully soon-to-be Genshin Ruins Expert

2023.03.23 20:13 norm_summerton Armature Gardner needing help

Hello. I’m going to be putting in a garden this year and I was wanting some good tips to help me out. I had a garden a few years ago in the same spot and the soil is not good for growing. I did manage to get some tomatoes and peppers but other things wouldn’t grow. Is there something I can add to the soil to make it better or should I dig it out and just get some new black dirt?
Also, any tips for keeping rabbits, cats, and bugs away would help a lot. I have plenty of time to work in it. I am located in central/northern Illinois. Thank you!

2023.03.23 19:59 joeyo1423 Looking for advice on where to plant certain plants beyond my raised beds

I have a backyard in which around half of it gets a lot of sun throughout the day. In that area, I built 4 raised beds, and do my gardening there. Its worked out really well. But now, I want to expand in a few other areas -
One is along the south side of my house. It gets lots of sun and its pretty bare over there. I was initially thinking of planting berries over there, but later read that its a bad idea because of the acidic soil, and they need to be spaced out really far from the foundation. So - what is a good plant to grow along the foundation of my house and how far should I put them from it? I have seeds for tons of different vegetables - various kinds of lettuce, beans, radishes, onion, peppers, herbs like dill, basil, rosemary, and many more, turnips, carrots, etc... and much more I did not name because Im already aware how big they get. As for fruit, the only ones I have are various berries (blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, blackberry) and tomatoes.
The second spot is along my fence - since I cant grow the berries along the house, i thought maybe along my chain link fence. I was thinking around 4-5 feet away to allow a bit of room for me to get between the bushes and fence. Does this seem like enough distance, and is it sensible to grow them along the fence?
There is another really long fence as well but that area can sometimes get hit with a good amount of water during a heavy rain. Any good candidates for that area? Even if its something I dont have seeds for, Id like to know because ill be happy to get whatever would work well along the fence
Last question, sorry - I have never grown tomatoes, strawberries or grapes. Are grapes okay to grow along a fence since theyre vines, or is there a better way to go about it? Should I get a trellis instead or something similar? Same for the strawberries and tomatoes, what would be an ideal setup for them?
Thank you very much if you read all this and have any advice

2023.03.23 19:50 Winter_Shelter_242 Pebble tips??

I am on the very sleepy Stitch quest and I have been trying to dig pebbles for a week now and I still can’t get any! I’ve been trying different digging buddies but my highest is a level 7. I don’t have forgotten lands unlocked yet so I can’t dig there. I’m confused on whether or not I dig on the sparkly spots or just normal ground like if I was gardening. I need 25 pebbles and I only have 2 that I have found just laying on the ground. Any tips would be very helpful as I have been struggling :)

2023.03.23 19:47 joeyo1423 Lawn gets very marshy after the rain, but in certain spots, and my plan is to add compost/soil. Was looking for some better opinions than my own

It would be far too expensive for me to redo the grading, as the lawn seems to have highs and lows all throughout, instead of all sloping to one area.
I read some stuff online and here, and aside from changing the grading, it seems like most recommend adding materials to the lawn to help drainage.
My plan is to use somehting like Vermiculite mixed with homemade compost, and maybe a little topsoil - but how to best go about this? Should I remove the layer of grass, lay the mix down, and put the grass back on top? Or should i get rid of the grass, add topsoil, and try to reseed it?
Any other suggestions? Ive tried aerating and that did absolutely nothing. I am assuming the tool isnt going deep enough, but I am not sure. There are around 6 bad spots, ranging in size from around 50 sq ft to 200 sq ft, so im going to try to address each one, one at a time.
I was wondering if others who are more knowledgeable think this is a good place to start, or if there are other things I can do?
I should also note, i did put in a garden, more plants around the house, and along the fence. Both my back-neighbors yards gently slope into mine, but now there is a small wall of dirt there with some water-loving plants going across the fence - this helped a lot, but during bad rain it still takes a couple days of hot sun to really clear it out

2023.03.23 19:03 TheCJK Endless Summer 3

First
The next morning Purrk got up, cleaned himself in his shower, and made his way to the midrange Bara mess hall. Leezib smiled at him and got a plate of foragables ready for him to graze on. He took it and made his way to an empty chair at the table.
Everyone was still groggy, eating in silence when a creature walked through the circular door.
Purrk looked it over. It was scaled, all over its back an shoulders, but its chest was hairy. Its head was pointed, and had two black beadlike eyes. It wore thick chains of tightly woven gold and silver metals around its chest and shoulders.
Leezib bowed her head to it. "Greetings Rova."
It raised a clawed hand as it hunched slightly. "Greetings Leezib."
"How can we help the captain?" She asked.
Rova spread his claws, showing a row of pink fingers underneath. "The captain wishes me to deliver the new Purrk to his task."
Leezib looked over at Purrk. "His task?"
Rova nodded. "Yes. When you are finished Purrk, please follow me."
Purrk looked down at his half full plate and back up at Leezib.
Her eyes widened as she tilted her head toward the creature.
Purrk slowly took another bite and over at Rova. The two held each other's gaze as Purrk kept chewing and refilling his mouth.
Eventually his plate was empty and Leezib stood up, grabbing it. "Go on weirdo. He's waiting on you, the captain is waiting on you."
Purrk, still chewing, got up and walked over to the creature.
Rova raised his claws and fingers as the door opened. "This way sir. I will take you to the designated room.
---===*===---
Purrk waddled down the winding hallway, running his hand along one of the woven ridges built into the wall. "So, Rova. Uh, where are we going?"
Rova was walking on all fours, but rose up to talk, turning his head back toward Purrk. "Room Delta forty forty seven, built into he aft quarters near the outer hull. Easily purged if fire breaks out."
Purrk nodded. "That sounds smart." He thought for a moment. "Uh, why would fire break out?"
"Ethanol is highly flammable. One mistake could cause the entire room to be engulfed."
"Oh! You want me doing a run?" Purrk started smiling.
Rova nodded. "Yes, yes." He lead them down an incline toward a thick metal encased door. "Through here Bara."
The door opened and Purrk stepped in. The room was domed, large enough he could barely make out the back wall, and full of barrels. Along the wall on the right were numerous metal stills with their waiting heat elements. He pointed at them and looked at Rova. "Wow. This is a lot."
"Captain Diminu sets his goals high. We have space, we have access to ports overflowing with grain, and as such he wanted to start a distillery aboard." Rova walked along the rows of fermenting corn, wheat, and sugar. "Unfortunately we have had several setbacks." He turned and looked at Purrk. "Turns out Diles do not have adequate olfactory receptors to distinguish methanol from ethanol."
Purrk laughed as he looked around. "You got money for all this, why not buy a detector or something."
Rova sighed, pausing to stare at Purrk. "He did." He said, motioning over Purrk.
"Oh. Ok. Wow." Purrk nodded to himself and started toward one of the still tanks. He put his hand on the cold metal. "This is a lot to run. Uh, I don't know how to move these."
Rova pointed at the cranes hanging from the domed ceiling above. "Quite simple, nearly guide themselves. Above that height line the grav plates have no effect." He pointed at a blue line painted on the upper portion of the wall.
Purrk kept nodding as he slowly spun around, taking it all in. "So, you want me in here, doing this." He looked at Rova.
Rova nodded. "It is why you were hired. Would you prefer to mop the halls? Your kind excrete a lot."
Purrk shook his head. "No, no. I'll get started."
Rova smiled with his small mouth at the end of his pointed head. "The Captain will be pleased to hear that. We expect great things from you Purrk." He turned and started toward the door. "We expect three pallets of jugs ready by our arrival at Wayward."
Purrk looked over at the stockpile of empty jugs. "Three pallets. Alright."
Rova exited out through the reinforced doors, disappearing as they slammed shut.
Purrk sighed, his hands on the side of his furry head. "Three pallets. Holy turds, three pallets." He looked up at the first towering still. "How the hell do I make this work."
---===*===---
The first day at the stills Purrk ended up finding four leaks, sealing them, making giant mess, and spilt four barrels of mash. During that, he got the basic operations down. The second day he managed to fill half a pallet of jugs with over a hundred proof whiskey. The third day he made it to a pallet and a half. He didn't know how close they were to the space station, his worry was evident in his exhaustion and lack of breaks.
The fourth day Rova returned to the distillery. He stood watching as Purrk ran the stills, tasting, moving back and forth monitoring temperature. He walked over, spooking Purrk. "I didn't mean to frighten you. I figured my chains made my approach easily heard."
"It's ok. I'm, I'm just busy." He looked over the creature. "I'm trying to get the order ready. How long until we get there?"
Rova smiled. "My apologies friend, but we arrived an hour ago."
Purrk tensed up, looking back at the two pallets of jugs. "Um. I, I didn't."
Rova waved the claws on his right hand. "Do not fret Purrk. We have monitored your progress, and you worked diligently. The tests we ran on the ground crew proved your worth."
"Tests?"
He nodded. "Yes. No one went blind this time."
Purrk blinked a few times. "This time?"
"Yes." He laughed slightly. "The poor unfortunate whose cabin you currently reside in, we had to drop him off to receive medical care. His loss, your prosperity it seems."
"Cause he went blind from the methanol?" Purrk asked.
"Yes, yes." Rova continued. "You did well making the amount you did. Taste and quality are up to par, and should make the ship quite a profit. Your cut will be amended."
Purrk smiled warily. "Thank you."
Rova smiled back at him, bowing slightly. "Your crew have been diligent as well. They have been overseeing the unloading of cargo, and await your assistance."
Purrk looked back at the stills. "Can I finish these runs?"
"Of course." Rova waved with his hand, splaying out his pink fingers. "After you have them done, we will send a crew to clean them for you. You have earned leave with your fellows if you wish."
"Alright. Thank you again."
"Welcome Purrk. See you down at the docks." Rova waved him off again, spinning around so his chains jangled.
"See you down there."
---===*===---
Purrk finished up and made his way through the corridors down to the loading ramp. He stopped at the entrance of the cargo bay and looked out over the swarm of peoples unloading flats and pallets. He saw the glint of Rova standing beside a large purplish creature. Several other spotted creatures stood around the purple one as well as a dozen Diles. The group were talking to several large colorful birds who had their own cadre of spotted creatures.
Leezib walked up beside him, digital clipboard in hand. "Heard you made some progress!" She slapped him on the back.
He squirmed a bit. "Yeah. It was kind of stressful."
"Well ease up. Everyone is talking about it, they're down there right now negotiating terms for its sale."
Purrk moved his head down toward the parties at the end of the ramp. "Who are all those people?"
Leezib smiled. "Those Touca there represent the owners of the station. Merchants."
"What's the big purple thing?"
Leezib held back a laugh. "That's your captain you doofus."
"Oh." He stood staring. "He's big."
She looked at him. "You've never seen one have you?"
"One what?" Purrk asked, turning toward her.
"Blenddar."
He shook his head. "No, no idea what they are."
She sighed. "The first race. Made to travel the stars ya know." She took a deep breath. "We're lucky to where we are." She slapped his back again. "Well, we could use you on the fork again. I got a list of unloadables and purchases. We hurry and get done and we're cleared for leave."
He stared at her for a moment.
"What?" She asked.
"After the warnings, you wanna go out onto the station?""
She laughed. "There's a good Baraman run bar on the outer level near one of the garden domes. We'll be fine." She started walking away. "You'll love it!."
He groaned and started off toward an unoccupied fork.
---===*===---
He moved the pallets from the back to the ramp at first. Once finished there Leezib motioned him to start hauling out grain sacks out for the Touca. He grabbed the first pallet and started toward their cargo haulers out on the dock. He drove down the ramp and stopped.
Purrk saw the extent of the station. Far away, seemingly under him, was a star. Its fire drawn up into the center base of the cylinder. The station spun around the machinery of the core, bright lights, plant filled domes, small ships flitting around, filled his eyes and mind. He turned and looked the other direction, toward the outer end of the cylinder. The machinery of the core tapered into a point, emitting a bright pink beam of light into the darkness of space.
Leezib laughed to herself, waving her clipboard at him. Purrk nodded and got back to stacking the cargo hauler.
Everyone busied themselves, checking off box after box on the digital boards. Eventually the work was done. Purrk wheeled the fork back into place and met Bithin who was waiting there with his own fork.
"Sup bud." Bithin said, dismounting.
Purrk smiled at him, showing his lower teeth. "Ready for a break."
Bithin laughed. "You're going out with us?"
He nodded. "Yeah. Why?"
Bithin's face went solemn, his fur standing on end. "Take your pistol and a knife. Stay in the pack with us, and don't stray. Ok?"
"Um, I don't have a knife. Just the gun."
Bithin waved him off. "I'll let Leezib know and she'll pack you one." He pointed over toward the entry door. "Go change up. I think everyone is about to get ready."
Purrk bobbed his head as he walked up the walkway. "I'll be down quick."
"No rush. We'll wait for everyone." Bithin replied.
---===*==---
The other seven midpay Baraman waited for him as Bithin promised. Leezib nodded and the group took off from the dock into the main halls. Purrk kept pace, but was quickly distracted by the numerous creatures walking around.
He paused as he saw a pack of covered entities rode down the center of the hall on a hovercart.
Bithin took his arm. "Don't stare. They don't like it."
Purrk leaned over to him. "What are those ones?"
"Shades."
Purrk looked over his shoulder quickly at them as they disappeared into the crowd. "Interesting. Why they wear those coverings?"
Leezib laughed. "You're such an idiot."
Purrk raised his hands. "What I do? Just ask a question and I'm an idiot?"
One of the other Bara shook their heads.
Bithin leaned into him. "They didn't come from the traveler bud. You need to take night school or something. Get that farm life out of you."
Purrk nodded slowly. "Guess so." He continued looking around at the numerous peoples walking and riding up and down the hall. "Guess so."
---===*===---
They reached the bar and entered in. The smell of the wood was refreshing as was the warmth. Purrk purred slightly, shaking at the forgotten feelings.
"Told you." Leezib said in his ear.
He kept pace with them and scooted into a booth in the corner. Everyone ordered lily beer and he followed suit.
The drinks arrived and conversation went around, but he wasn't able to focus on the topic of throttle responses in modified hovercarts. He looked around and looked at Leezib. "I'm heading to the bathroom."
She nodded. "Don't leave the bar."
He nodded and lifted his right hand in compliance.
Purrk walked across the bar and entered the male piss room. He squatted and relieved himself near the drain, relaxation going through his body.
After the last dribble he shook his rear and went over to wash up. The faucet flowed heavy and he doused his head and back with the water, shaking it down his spine. His fur ruffled and then he shook it all off. "Oh wow. That's nice." He took in a deep breath, smiling, and went back out into the bar.
He looked over at the booth and his comrades were still there, another round of empty glasses sitting in the center of the table. He smiled, but none saw. He shrugged and walked over to the bar, heaving his weight onto an empty stool.
The barkeep caught his eye and he pointed at a citrus blend. The barkeep poured it and slid it down to him. Purrk caught it deftly and smiled down at his brew, sniffing it in.
He downed the first and was starting on the second when the neighbor on his right leaned over. She was older than him, fur darker, greasier.
"Hey. You, you came in on that woven ship right?"
He nodded. "Yeah."
She bobbed a bit. "I came here on a woven ship years ago, ya know. I, I studied. Got my diploma."
"That's nice." He grinned, turning back toward his drink.
"No, no." She took his hand. "It's worthless out here. Got me off home, got me to travel, but I'm stuck out here you know don't you. You're not a ground man, not with them."
He shrugged. "Nope. Don't know. I'm an uneducated idiot like the rest of em." He said, staring at her.
She shook her head slowly. "No, no you're not. Not if you're off ship. Only smart Bara can get off Baringa and be free like us."
"Not me. I just got lucky."
She leaned back. "You didn't get your diploma?" She laughed. "How?"
He shrugged. "I make good whiskey."
She nodded. "Smart." She looked up at him as she took a long sip from her own glass. "Whiskey. " She laughed. "I studied archeology. Linguist, old tongues. I wanted to prove we're not all dumb ya know. I can talk like Touca. Smart." She waivered on her stool and Purrk held her steady. "I know the old runes. Know, stories. Ya know?"
"Sure." He smiled.
"You know runes?"
He shook his head. "Nope. I only know my pond back home." He looked down into his glass. "Miss it a lot."
She smiled. "Well I love runes. They're all over the makings. Big black stones, big runes. The traveler loved marking his works, all over them. Signs."
Purrk tilted his head. "Big black rocks with runes on them."
She nodded.
He laughed. "There's one of those near my pond back home. I loved sitting in it to sun off."
She laughed with him, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Yup. You do know!"
He looked at her. "Archeologist huh."
She nodded. "Yup." She leaned into him. "One day. One day I'll get out of her, get funded for a dig maybe. Tom said he would. Said he'd fund me one day. But everything's all been studied." She wobbled and looked at him. "Nothing new to know they say. Dumb birds."
Purrk raised his glass. "Dumb birds."
She laughed, lifting hers higher. "To the dumb birds!"
The bar erupted in laughter as glasses raised up. "To the Touca!"

2023.03.23 18:32 Mellophones4 How many lot loaders do y’all have during the day? I work 8-5 m-f and up until 4 pm I’m the only one every day

I just started about a month or so ago and so far I enjoy the job. The hours are great and I got them because I took the spot of a guy who had been doing it for 4 years.
What gets me though is during the busy times I would kill to have two people. Now that it’s warming up I’m struggling to keep up because we are getting busier
What’s the worst is the service desk and garden are always calling for loading assistance. The ofa’s and garden associates don’t have radios so of course they are asking for me. I keep getting told especially with garden to not do it but then people get attitude over the radio and if I customer complains I get talked to
Just yesterday the service desk called for loading assistance. I went over there and they handed me a bag with a single 45 degree pvc pipe. Said he’s in spot one curbside. I was already behind and I just took it and left because I didn’t want to make enemies so soon. But we literally had 5 ofa’s yet the choose to just use the radio
It’s past the point of frustrating when even the HC and front end supervisor ask me everyday “are you the only one here?” When I have to get over the radio and tell people It’ll be like 10 minutes before I can get to them
The old lot loader just said “that’s how it is man” so I guess not much will change

2023.03.23 17:53 Killtec7 [2023] Pre-Draft Rankings

As always the point of these posts are about dialogue, communication and potentially opening people's eyes to different threads around players that may not be widely known.
Not everyone knows Rashee Rice out produced NFL receivers at SMU. Not everyone knows Kendre Miller was a 3 star recruit that pushed TCUs only 5 star recruit in it's history off the roster. Addison played outside for the first time this past year and Lincoln Riley spreads the ball around historically. Stuff like that.
As always, I don't care about tight ends. I want quality profiles that slip into the third round of rookie drafts--it's just what I do.

NOTE: Before I get into it, I don't really talk about it below but I did review some of the special team stats for all players. Tank got a little play on special teams. No surprise Josh Downs and Gibbs (the best of the bunch) had some upside in this arena. Mims was about the only other player that was grade above average in the return game.
Additionally reviewing pass blocking, about the only guys that look like they’d have legs to have early pass blocking work are Tank, Charbs, and Bijan. Kendre is probably next tier, but he was too uneven to project anything for the NFL.

Quarterback Rankings (tier, expected draft capital)

1. Bryce Young, Alabama (I), Top 2
Statistically the man can’t be shook. You can slice and dice the data in about any way and he’s just great everywhere.
No size concerns; if Trevor Lawrence can be 6-6 220, if Stroud can have 5 inches and only 9 pounds on Young and have no size concerns, then we just aren't going to have this conversation with Bryce. Final nail in the coffin, CMC had over 1000 touches in three seasons before missing his first game with a combine weight two pounds lighter than Bryce. Frame this, frame that. 1000 touches at running back. Bryce is fine.
2. CJ Stroud, Ohio State (I), Top 2
Picking between the top two is a coin flip. Stroud is a killer and has been ripping the ball the last year. I see Matt Ryan when I watch CJ. It’s like my takes two years ago, where I eventually settled on Justin Fields QB1. They are both extremely good players, anyone that is cutting on one of them to elevate the other just isn’t seeing the full picture.
3. Hendon Hooker, Tennessee (II), Round 2
Hooker is closer to the big two than Richardson in terms of passing ability but we cannot ignore the advanced age. Hooker is 3 years older than Richardson; he was in the same recruiting class as Tua.
The difference maker for me, is that Hooker has been a better thrower of the football every year of his life compared to even Richardson’s best year. While Richardson has more athletic upside, production wise/statistically Hooker is just as capable of a rusher of the football.
Hooker will never go before Richardson in your rookie drafts. But if he slips into the third, I’d smash draft every time, and if the positional value runs out in the second—again smash that draft button.
This valuation is with the expectation that Hooker will go top 70 in the NFL draft. If he didn’t tear his ACL late, I’d guess he’d be a top 50 pick easy, but I’ll give some wiggle to this.
4. Anthony Richardson, Florida (II), Top 15
Anthony Richardson is not Cam Newton.
Cam Newton was a force, he was dominant in college football, and arguably has one of the single best individual performances in college football history.
Anthony Richardson is not that. But Anthony Richardson will be a top 3 QB in rookie ADP, he will be the third QB taken in the NFL draft, and he is a rushing quarterback.
I don’t mind Colin Kaepernick comps, I think that could be a potential outcome for Richardson.
But people that think he’s Dante Culpepper, or the next Cam Newton. There is just no evidence that that passing upside has ever existed with Richardson.
Bet on Richardson, that’s fine, but also openly admit you are betting on tools/projection.
5. Will Levis, Kentucky (IX), Round 1/2
I’ve heard some ridiculously lofty comparisons with Levis too. “Joe Burrow”, “Patrick Mahomes”; it’s not fair to grade on the idiot curve, but let’s be quite clear Levis profile is similar to Richardson in the sense that he was forced pushed off the rosteleft on the bench by a player unlikely to even get camp snaps in the league—and he never delivered on his promise or his physical tools.

Running Back Rankings

1. Bijan Robinson, Texas (I), Top 15
Ezekiel Elliott
2. Zach Charbonnet, UCLA (II), Round 2
Three-down back in a three-down body. Graded out similarly to Bijan via PFF. Efficient runner, put through his paces in a variety of schemes. If this was a red-shirt sophomore that only ever played at UCLA we might be talking about this class having two elite talents. Top 50 draft capital seals this evaluation for me.
3. Kendre Miller, TCU (III), Round 2
This one is a projection. He is not Dalvin Cook, Dalvin Cook was an all-time FSU player, and it was abundantly clear that he was great even as a recruit. He was consistently in the conversation for RB1 of that loaded 2017 class.
Having said that, Kendre Miller is the closest I’ve seen to Dalvin Cook since then. The contact balance and his ability to string moves together, stay on his feet, and bounce off defenders. If Nick Chubb is number 1, Cook is number 2, Kendre might be 3 for me in this department. (Ignoring the existence of the human goliath Henry because that’s not fair)
Flip side, I said I love stories. What better story than the three-star Kendre Miller chasing a very good and TCU's first five-star recruit in Zach Evans off the roster and refusing to get left on the bench. Kendre Miller might just be Lamar Miller—but this is probably the “my guy” of the season. He was just too electric, and was too efficient of a runner all season long.
Top 50 draft capital again seals this evaluation for me. But I haven’t seen him in anyone’s top 50 prospect rankings and ultimately hope that an NFL team sees what I see.
4. Jahmyr Gibbs, Alabama (III), Round 2
I’m a blasphemer. Not only is Gibbs not my RB2, but RB4 feels like the right spot for me.
Gibbs is a tremendous space player, and if you were locking him to Denver, I’d be all in. But he wasn’t quite as efficient as Alvin at Tennessee and like Alvin, it really bothers me that I didn’t get to see a full workload on him. This isn’t a size concern, it’s more so a concern of how NFL teams may be likely to use him. I’m thinking more like a poor man’s CJ Spiller—which hell that is good enough for one 1700 scrimmage yard season. But I don’t expect Alvin Kamara level production. The landing spot is extremely important to me with Gibbs.
5. Zach Evans, Ole Miss (IV) , Round 3
Pure projection pick. Hyper efficient any time he gets the ball in his hands, he reminds me of an Alvin Kamara quote from Mike Daniels on how Kamara was like a bull, and you wouldn’t expect him to be as strong as he is and just such a load to bring down. Watching Evans play I get this sense frequently, every bit of contact with Evans is violent.
6. Tank Bigsby, Auburn (IV), Round 3
That pro day doesn’t change anything but might give him some hype that he deserves. Tank as a pure runner is top 4 in the class IMO. Underrated, but I think the NFL will clear this all up for us. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t get day 2 draft capital.
Devone Achane, Texas A&M (V)
Sean Tucker, Syracuse (V)
Tyjae Spears, Tulane (V)

Wide Receiver Rankings

1. Quentin Johnston, TCU (I), Round 1
Movement ability, length, growth opportunities.
TCU has historically been a limited program at WR, and he predominantly played outside—but if QJ hits, I think a lot of the doubters are going to be at a total loss (similar to DK Metcalf).
I beg the NFL, send him to Buffalo and let him become buddies with Stefon Diggs.
2. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Ohio State (II), Top 20
This is the best receiver in the class. Highest floor, best pedigree. There is only one other receiver in this class that was more productive in high school. He set records at Ohio State. You want to play it safe? Take JSN over QJ. Do it, you won’t be disappointed by JSN.
3. Jordan Addison, USC (II), Round 1
If you put Jordan Addison in Quentin Johnston’s body, he’d be Marvin Harrison Jr.
Addison might be the most complete receiver in the draft, he played inside (Pitt) and outside (USC), and was clearly the best receiver on the roster in both situations. There just might be some physical limitations here that likely prevent him from being a tier I dynasty WR1.
4. Marvin Mims, Oklahoma (III), Round 2
I already alluded to it. Mr Texas Football, high school all-American, Texas receiving yards record holder. Landed at OU a year after OU landed 3 five-star recruits and still outproduced them all as a freshman.
As a sophomore, at that time, it easy to say Marvin Mims wasn’t supposed to be getting snaps. There were the 3 five-star recruits from 2019, they added another 2 players higher ranked than him by this point and Mims got less snaps and less targets as a result. But he still out produced all of them by about every measure while going from playing 70% outside as a freshman to 75% in the slot as a sophomore.
By his junior year he returned to the outside and was essentially the last man standing outside of Theo Wease.
Great players survive, overcome, and out produce. Now give me a guy with nearly 32” arms, excellent athleticism, and that background. He’ll probably go round 2 in the NFL draft and be available to jump on in the mid second of most rookie drafts. Let people draft the more hyped guys.
5. Rashee Rice, Southern Methodist (III), Round 2
I’m back and forth on this one between Mims and Rice. Outside of QJ, this is about the only alpha profile in the class (6ft+, 200lbs+). Similar to Mims he’s outproduced his fair share of talented cohort, the only boon here is that his cohort has played snaps in the NFL including the third rounder Danny Gray.
Throw in he played all year with a broken toe, played inside/outside throughout his college career.
I’ve already spilled the beans; I like long arms for leverage and late play separation. He strikes me as the next Brandon Aiyuk and I think a smart NFL team is going to identify him in the second round and give him a solid run.
6. Zay Flowers, Boston College (III), Round 2
Everyone and their mom will tell me how wrong I am for having him this low. But he’s a smaller frame than Mims, had less competition, and wasn’t quite as productive as Mims when you start adjusting all the different metrics. They are in the same ballpark, and Flowers in tantalizing, obviously I have them in the same tier. But I giggle when I see Flowers as people’s top 2 or 3 WR and then find Mims as their WR15.
7. Josh Downs, North Carolina (IV), Round 3
At face value Downs deserves to be in the same conversation as Mims/Flowers but once you start digging into it a little you find he was used almost exclusively in the slot, had a lower aDoT than you’d expect and IMO is closer to what people thought Rondale Moore was.
Still a tantalizing talent, a lot of NFL upside. His raw numeric profile (not including size) is the best in the class. No one else really had the consistent high-level production he did.
If there is anyone that will make me regret having them this low it is Downs.
8. Jalin Hyatt, Tennessee (IV), Round 2
Long arms, excellent athleticism. You know I want to love him. He was getting some round 1 hype there for a bit too. But almost exclusively worked out of the slot in a good offense. He kind of reminds me of watching Paul Richardson way back when. The comp I wanted to work toward was Chris Olave but I can’t shake 15 pounds and Hyatt only working outside for about 10% of his college snaps. Olave was 85% outside.
If we had some special teams upside I might be more likely to take the swing, but he strikes me as a streaky fantasy player with more NFL upside than fantasy upside.

Compiled Rankings

  1. Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas
  2. Bryce Young, QB, Alabama
  3. CJ Stroud, QB, Ohio State
  4. Quentin Johnston, WR, TCU
  5. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State
6. Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida
  1. Zach Charbonnet, RB, UCLA
8. Jordan Addison, WR, USC
  1. Kendre Miller, RB, TCU
10. Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama
11. Zach Evans, RB, Ole Miss
  1. Tank Bigsby, RB, Auburn
  2. Marvin Mims, WR, Oklahoma
  3. Rashee Rice, WR, SMU
15. Zay Flowers, WR, Boston College
  1. Josh Downs, WR, North Carolina
  2. Jalin Hyatt, WR, Tennessee
  3. Sean Tucker, RB, Syracuse

Full Ranking Commentary
· Using this more to look at how I view the talents to compare against ADPs to recognize who I’m out on relative to ADP and find out who I’ll end up chasing.
· I would expect to be way out of position for Anthony Richardson, Jordan Addison, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Zay Flowers. They’d be long gone before I take them. Doesn’t mean I don’t like them, just means others like them more.
· There are few universes where I see myself taking Zach Evans top 12, I’d prefer him mid second at the earliest.
· At RB, I have no concern over drafting Charbonnet, even at something like the #4 spot. Kendre feels like good value in the late first.
· At WR, Rashee is probably the guy I chase at the 1/2 turn if all my preferred talents are gone. Mims I shouldn’t have to snag until mid to late second.
· If I were to re-rank them slightly, I’d probably be something like #11-#14; Bigsby, Rice, Evans, Mims.
· Feels like the draft runs out of guys at about pick 7/8 and then everyone else is a guy that I’d love to take at 2.04-2.10 but I’m going to get forced selecting 9-12.
· By ADP, I think there is going to be a clear divide at the top 9 prospects. JSN, Stroud, Young, Richardson, Bijan will probably be the favored tier one talents. Gibbs, Charbs, QJ, Addison will probably be the clear tier two talents. After that it'll be the wild west, the predraft 3.01 could become the post draft 2.01 in a flash.
· I don't rank tight ends.

2023.03.23 17:25 KvotheLucchesi 20 days in Japan for First Time, we need help

Hi!
Me and my fiancee are going to Japan, Arriving in Narita on April 21, and leaving in may 9.
We are in our late 20's.
We are not late night drinkers, we dont go to clubs, etc..
Our main interests are: unmissible main attractions, anime relate stuff, nerd/geek/games, food (but not much expensive), take nice pictures.
We got really good ticket deal but didnt check the dates beforehand so Golden Week will happen in the end of our trip so we made the choice to go direct to Kyoto once we arrive and leave the last days (Golden Week) for Tokyo since we researched that Tokyo is not as bad as Kyoto and Osaka in Golden Week.
We need help and sugestions, if we are missing something really cool/nice, or if there is something which dont make sense in our itinerary. We are really open for suggestions.
April 21 - Friday (Narita > Kyoto)
Arrive at Narita (Around 8am) and get the Shinkansen to Kyoto (I know, its going to be exhausting as hell), leave our bags in hotel (Location is really close to Sanjo Station, 1 block from Pontocho Park) and wander around, its going to be a slow day since we will be tired from the huge trip. Maybe do some shopping at Donki, 7Eleven, walk a bit around Chion area and then head to hotel and sleep.
Maybe Kyoto Station/Tower at Sunset/Night here or in the next day.
April 22 - Saturday (Kyoto)
  1. Bamboo Forest
  2. Togetsu-Kyo Bridge
  3. Monkey Park
  4. Scenic Romantic Train
  5. Hozugawa River Cruise

April 23 - Sunday (Nara/Kyoto)

  3. Kasuga-Taisha
  4. Nara Park
  5. Mochi Pounding Nakatanidou
  6. Higashimuki Shopping Street
  7. Mochiidone Shopping Arcade
Leave Nara around 3pm maybe and do something in Kyoto that I dont know yet.
April 24 - Monday (Kyoto)
Missing anything?
April 25 - Tuesday (Kyoto > Osaka)
Slow morning, wake early and maybe revisit something, do some last minute shopping and checkout from hotel and head to Osaka. Leave bags in hotel, we are staying at Dotonbori, really close Ebisu Bridge.
Wander around the region and go to Shinsekai in the afternoon/early night.
Namba Yasaka Jinja (Is it a good choice at this day?)
Dotonbori at night.
April 26 - Wednesday (Osaka)
April 27 - Thursday (Osaka)
UNIVERSAL JAPAN
Maybe a bit of Dotonbori at night at dinner.
April 28 - Friday (Osaka > Tokyo)
Slow morning, wake up early, maybe go to something that we missed or revisit something we really liked. Maybe Namba Yasaka Jinja here and not at 25th.
Leave hotel and get to the airport as 11:30am, take a flight to Haneda (We are not taking the shinkansen because we got this plane ticket using credit card points, so kinda free).
Get to our hotel around 14 or 15pm and checking
We are staying in Shinjuku, just a block from Isetan Department Store.
April 29 - Saturday (Tokyo)
  1. Shibuya Hikarie
  2. shibuya Sky

I think there are plenty more to do in Harajuku, Omotesando and Shibuya, any suggestion that match our interests?
Somethings we will just see by wandering around those places I guess.
I think maybe its best to split this day in two, its like super packed, we can split it with the next day.

May 8 - Sunday (Tokyo)
Maybe Ueno in this day, last mine shopping/packing.
May 9 - The end
Back home :(

My main concerns are:
Is it too much things to do per day?
I would like to visit Ueno Park and Ameyoko Shopping Street, when is it good for me to visit there in my itinerary? In the last day? (May 8)
I want to visit Tokyo Skytree but I'm not sure when It is best.
Im missing any huge turistic spots? (I dont want to, since unfortunately I'm not going back to Japan very soon)
We are not huge Temple/Shrines lovers but we like them and want to go to the main ones with great historical weight and the most photogenic ones too, are we missing any really cool and famous one? Especially in Kyoto.

We are really open for sugestion and can change our itinerary (As long as we stay in the same city at night)
Sorry about any english mistake, It's not my main language.
Thank you all!!

2023.03.23 17:22 SomeRandomTrSoldier Pommel gardens would a better center base than Mirror bay watchtower with much less tweaks required.

Compared to Mirror bay watchtower Pommel gardens offers muuuch more cover and infantry play still leaving room for vehicle fights outside of the area. More secure sunderer spots and maybe increasing the size of base a bit would make it much more enjoyable center base than what Mirror bay watchtower is offering.

2023.03.23 17:16 mitchmatch26 2023 32 Teams/32 Days: Pittsburgh Steelers--Replacement Refs Style

Pittsburgh Steelers

Division: AFC North Record: 9-8 (3-3 Division), 3rd place AFC North Playoffs: Never rely on Joe Flacco to get you in.
First, thanks to u/ehhhhhhhhhhmacarena for letting me sub in on this for the 2nd time in three years. Maybe next year we'll get it right the first time. 😘 LINK TO HUB
General Season Review
The 2022 Steelers season was seen largely as a rebuilding year. No Ben. TJ missing a lot of time. OL not really a work of art. Offensively there are only 3 starters on their 2nd contracts, so the team is very young there. The Front seven on defense was/is severely lacking depth behind TJ, Cam, and Highsmith. The DBs outside of Minkah and Edmunds were largely unknowns, gambles, or value signings. Nothing about this team screamed “playoff chances until the last second of the season”. But that’s exactly how it went. They were alive until the clock struck zero on Jets-Dolphins in Week 18.
Mitchell Trubisky won the starting QB job out of camp, and as the veteran with the most starting experience on the roster, that makes sense. He was the safe choice. The staff has seen what they get with Mason. KP was a rook and you don’t want to shellshock him too soon. But you know what you get with a QB like Mitch. An uninspired offense that doesn’t move the ball quickly at all. Once KP arrived at half in Week 4 vs the Jets, the team was his. Sure the box score doesn’t look all that different. But if you have a choice between a vet who doesn’t do much, and a rookie who at least looks the same and improving? Take the upside.
KP improved every week and limited his mistakes. He ended up taking more control of the offense and had 4 fourth quarter comebacks/game winning drives, in weeks 9, 11, 15, and 16. Talk about improvement.
But the team still started 2-6. Finished 7-3 to go 9-8. Missed the playoffs. Nobody is “happy” with missing the playoffs or a barely .500 season, but given the situation, it wasn’t a bad season. Lots to love about this year. Some nice role players stuck out, the stars did what they do, and the franchise’s future showed lots of good things.

Weekly Game Review:
Week 1, @ Bengos: WHAT A WIN. WHAT A WIN. Okay, so I was at this game (6-0 all time baybayyyy) and felt gross after. An injured long snapper being the difference maker is crazy. Oh and Minkah going completely fucking super saiyan on the kitties from Eastern Kentucky Ohio. 14 tackles. 10 solo. 1 INT/TD. AND A BLOCKED XP TO SEND IT TO OVERTIME. Boy went crazy. Mike T started the game by stuffing everyones lockers with blacked out Air Force 1s, and Minkah brought that energy. Ja’Marr Chase felt it too when he gave Mink the bird and got 15 yards for it hahahahahahahahahaha.
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Side note: Cincy fans, your city is known for its god awful chili/meat sauce/who cares what it's called. But PBS serves the fucking Walmart brand of it in stadium?? What up w that??
Week 2, vs. Patriots: First week of seven without TJ 🥲. Bill Belichick activated sleeper agent Gunner O to fumble that punt in the third quarter and then the Patriots scored.
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Week 3, @ Brownies: Jacoby “Brisket” Brissett sliced and diced the defense to hand the Steelers this L. Best Browns QB on the roster, hands down.
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Week 4, vs. Jets: Distractions from WRs who weren’t getting the ball and QBs fucking moms should distract the Jets and allow the Steelers defense to take over and win this one pretty handily right? Nope. Wanna know why?
Because:
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Subbed at half. ITS TIME FOR THE PICKLER TO SHINE. No? Maybe next week in Buffalo.
Week 5, @ Bills: Ron Howard: “He did not shine in Buffalo the next week.”
Week 6, vs. Bucs: Kenny got slapped in the head and left the game in the 3rd. But guess what?? MITCH TRUBISKY DOESN’T SUCK AT FOOTBALL AND HE BEAT TOM BRADY AND THE BUCS.
Week 7, @ Fins: This SNF game was honestly not bad despite the box score. Despite the L there was a lot of positive to take from Kenny and his growth, which is what mattered most this year.
Week 8, @ Eagles: I don’t wanna talk about it.
Week 9, @ UPMC Rooney Sports Complex: This is around the time the reports that KP8 had an “office” at the team facility to grind extra tape. Turns out it’s just a desk in the team room. Sorry Russ haters, not today.
LIVE IMAGE OF KENNY WORKING IN HIS OFFICE
Week 10, vs. Saints: Ho hum. Steelers beating Andy Dalton. What’s new? TJ back after missing weeks 2-8 and healthy-ish. Najee finally gets kickin and the offense with it. Not a world beater, but better all around.
Week 11, vs. Bengals: 🚨🚨 30 POINT OFFENSIVE EFFORT ALERT 🚨🚨 Buuuuuuuut the Bengos transformed to the Dark Bengos over their bye and Dark Bengo must have his sacrifice. Top 5 Uni matchup on the year too hands down. Maybebe ever.
Whiteinbred Bengo vs Blacked Out Block Letters. Chefs Kiss.
Week 12, @ Colts: Steelers love beating the Colts. I don’t know what it is about them, but there’s blood in the water. My logic is Indiana is next to Ohio. Steelers hate and historically own Ohio teams. Indy by nature of being near Ohio is basically Ohio. So, the team just treats them like they do any other Ohio team.
Week 13, @ Falcons: The coolest part of this game was the similarities of Connor Heywards first NFL touchdown and his father’s first NFL receiving TD.
Week 14, vs. Ravens: KP got hurt on like the 8th play of the game bc he came down with whatever disability Tua has that doesn’t allow them to properly go down when being tackled. I don’t know if it’s the body weight sack rules, QBs not knowing how to fall, or the spinning twist tackles, something’s gotta change.
Mitch Trubisky sucks at football.
Week 15, @ Panthers: This was a win but it certainly wasn’t because Mitch Trubisky is *good* at football. The Panthers had 21 rushing yards. Even for pass heavy teams that’s bad. So when The Darnold is your QB, you’re gonna suffer.
I mean uhhh the RIGGED NFL STOLE this game from the GEQBUS.
Week 16, vs. Raiders: A lot of us Steelers fans were nervous for this game. The Raiders have been a thorn in Coach Ts side for years. He was 2-5 entering this game against them. But we weren’t gonna let that ruin the Immaculate Reception 50th anniversary game, especially after Franco passed. And in 1972 football fashion, the Steelers won a 13-10 barn burner on a TD pass from KP to GP with :46 on the clock. And then Cam Sutton made that diving INT to seal the deal. Merry Christmas Yinz.
Week 17, @ Ravens: Naj delivers his first 100 yard performance of the year. TJ Watt says this is the first time all year he’s been injury free. Mitch Trubisky is not allowed to suck at football. Life is good.
Week 18, vs. Browns: All the team had to do is win against a division opponent, and pray to god the Bills don’t phone it in against the Patriots. Oh and rely on Joe Flacco to beat the Fins. Never rely on flacco for anything.

Position Group Reviews:

QB: This is why everyone is here. To read about Mitchell Trubisky. Who sucks at football. He is the definition of a “he can change for me” signing. Uninspiring, not the reason those Bears teams won, and definitely the reason some of these games were lost this year.
But the real real reason we all are here. Kenny Fucking Pickett. The box score is not favorable here. But look a little deeper. 2nd best deep ball passer this year!! Crazy. Watch the games. Watch him progress each game. Not making the same mistake twice. 11 turnovers in his first 5 games. 2 in his last 8 games, which came after the bye. Boy was IN THE LAB. Three 4th quarter comebacks and 4 game winning drives. He may not be on the same trajectory of that young class of elite game changing QBs like Mahomes, Burrow, or Allen. But he good. Oh he goooood. And that flow?? Nothing can stop THE PICKLER.
RB: Naj started the year slow and never really kicked off in a major way. He had a Lisfranc injury from camp that had him wearing a metal plate in his foot until Week 6. But he was still solid on a relatively mediocre offense.
The real story of this group is Jaylen Warren. UDFA from Ok. St. Had to compete with 3 other RBs in camp who all had been on the roster the previous year. Coach T likes to say “2 dogs, 1 bone.” Well Jaylen is the dog with that bone in his mou--- actually not gonna finish that one.
WR: Yinzers will focus on the fact that Diontae Johnson had 86 catches and no TDs. Which is objectively bad. But let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater on DJ. Pretty much every route he ran was a sideline route, comeback, curl, or something else that yields little to no YAC. He yet again had a great year separating from DBs better than anyone in the NFL. He also continues to show that he never really earned the name Diontae Dropson with his 4.8% drop rate which ranks 75th highest among pass catchers in the nfl.
Pickens just made highlight after highlight this year. He’s a freak. But he suffered from a somewhat limited route tree this year same as Diontae.
Steven Sims was a nice surprise out of camp this year too. Reliable returner mostly, solid in the slot. Carved out a nice role in the offense for himself.
Everyone else here was a body (Boykin, Cody White, Gunner) or injured (Calvin Austin III).
TE: Muth is about as reliable as it gets. Best YAC on the team at the moment. Fights for yards. Had a solid year and looks to continue his growth in year 3.
Zach Gentry was just a body in his first two years in Pittsburgh. Albeit he’s just a 6’8” 270 lb body. But the last two years he’s been a reliable and improved blocker, as well as a solid 15-20 catch type of target. Not gonna light it up, but definitely worth a roster spot.
Connor Heyward was not drafted because he’s Cam’s brother! He’s a solid H-Back type that was used in a lot of different ways this year. Really big fan. He may never be a top end player, but has long time beloved role player written all over him.
OT: Chuks Okorafor continues to be underrated. He plays the less glorified OT spot and isn’t a top 5 in the league, so he must be trash right? Nope. Dude is solid. Worth the extension last spring/summer.
Dan Moore Jr. (DMJ) in year two was about the same as year 1. A big bodied, athletic, raw, and not great LT. He’s gonna get a third year to start, maybe with a camp competition body. Yinzers are sick of him and want a high profile turnstile like Orlando Brown Jr. to replace him. I say wait for year 3.
The Orlando Brown joke was written before the Bengos signed him and I think that it's even funnier now hahaha
iOL: James Daniels was the big signing of the year for the Steelers, and despite a rough start he was really solid. Definitely the best OL of the year for the team, but nobody was exceptional.
Mason Cole's signing inspired none but he played a little better than expected. Tomlin really seems to like him and his communication skills. I think the value he brings may just be stuff us fans don’t see or know since we don’t know the calls.
Kevin Dotson, a fan favorite in the past, lost a lot of fans this year. The left side of the OL was pretty bad overall but there are some who think DMJ may improve with a better running mate at LG. KDot had a good to great rookie year. Oft injured in year 2 and down year 3. He’s probably on his last legs here if something doesn’t change in 2023.
DL: Cam is great and aging like a fine wine, I don’t need to really expand on that.
The rest of the group was interesting to watch. Ogunjobi was nice, especially as a late June add to the roster. I hope he can re-sign in Pittsburgh.
DeMarvin Leal was a tweener coming out of the draft and it showed in his usage. Only ticked up after TJs injury and shuffling of the DL. He was IR’ed for a bit and never really topped 25% snaps in a game but once maybe. He’ll be an interesting developmental piece to watch in 2023.
The rest of the guys did their jobs. Alualu was benched in favor of Montravius Adams. Chris Wormley has been a good rotational guy. Isaiahh Loudermilk made little to no noise this year after a decent rookie year in 2021.
OLB: Everyone likely wants to hear about TJ, but Alex Highsmith gets the first mention here. TJ being out for like half the season called for Highsmith to step up. And he did. 14.5 sacks. A true breakout year and silencing the yinzers who say “just plug anyone opposite TJ and they’ll eat”. He’s in a contract year in 2023 and deserves to be paid. Alex Highsmith was an absolute baller in 2022 and deserves his respect.
TJ was banged up and made didn’t make too much noise this year.
God dammit they need a third EDGE guy to spell TJ/Alex. It’s a bunch of JAGs in that room behind them.
ILB: Speaking of JAGs. Nobody here impressed. People will tell you Mark Robinson made a splash in the Ravens game, to which I respond that he played 26 snaps that game. The ILB group was so mediocre this year I’m not going to expand on any individual past that bit above. Big draft/FA need. Maybe 2x.
CB: Cam Sutton 🥲 was given the outside CB job full time this year basically. And he thriiiived. After being a role player for most of his career thus far, he bet on himself, and is now paid in Detroit. He got to watch Joe Haden play outside for a few seasons and I really think that Steelers era Joe is a good comp for Sutton. Smart, tackles well, versatile. Enjoy him Lions fans.
The rest of the group did well enough I guess. Levi was a solid inside outside guy and took the bulk of the CB2 snaps. A bargain at $4m/year. Thanks Commies for really screwing up Buffalo’s plans there. Ahkello Witherspoon greatly cooled down from his 3 INTs in the last 5 games of 2021. He got some time outside and wasn’t great. Not the worst CB in Tomlin’s tenure, definitely not the best.
I also want to take a side note on Arthur Maulet. He’s not a great NCB. But he brings a lot of energy and fire to this team. He apparently got in some peoples faces in the locker room after a 2022 loss that I refuse to talk about. He really seems to value that accountability and brings a level of leadership that is good on an otherwise young team. He’dnever get a mention otherwise, but I think he deserves some love for what he brings.
S: Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Terrell Edmunds continues to show he is Mr. Consistent. He wears a lot of hats for the defense, is always available, and largely a mistake free player. Yinzers still hate him because he’s a first rounder that isn’t an all-pro, but if every first rounder was at least an available, consistent, career starter, most teams would be fucking loaded.
Damontae Kazee is that third safety Mike Tomlin has been searching for the last few years. Tre Norwood looked like he may be it last year, but Kazee beat him out for the job. He’s a human missile. A violent player. And a full, healthy season ahead should do him well amongst the fans.

Final Thoughts

Draft and free agency are looming. It’s exciting. New GM/AGM, new QB. Tomlin does what he does. There’s a lot of things to be excited about as a Steeler’s fan for the foreseeable future.
Kenny is the focus of the team now. Everything done should be done in furtherance of his development as the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise QB. Better Defense to support him on his bad days. Better OL to keep him upright. Better skill guys to make his life easier. It’s all for him. As it should be. If he’s right, the teams right.

2023.03.23 16:06 DrThrowitallaway Mower recommendations for a half-acre lawn?

Hi all-- looking for mower recommendations. Have about a half-acre of lawn on the lot, maybe a little under, broken up here and there by a few trees, a garden plot, some shrubs, etc. The lot is fairly level but the ground is uneven/rough in spots. I'm debating between one of the smaller lawn tractors, like a rear engine rider, or a standard gas push mower or walk-behind.
Rear engine rider seems very fun, and it has a cupholder. The 30" RERs seem fairly maneuverable and would fit through our gates. Downside is cost and maybe maintenance?
With a push mower or walk-behind, the benefit is exercise, with the downsides of it taking longer to mow. I know they have some with larger deck sizes but those are almost as expensive as the RER. It's been a while since I used a self-propelled but I remember being annoyed with one the last time I did, having some difficulties pulling the mower backward/turning it to get the corners of the yard.
We have to mow from March through November here and during the spring the grass grows like 8 inches a week. The lawn is a mix but is largely thick perennial ryegrass. I don't care about lawn stripes or anything fancy... just need to keep the grass down. Any suggestions for what would best tackle the job?

2023.03.23 15:47 l1ghtbulb85 Sloping patio leads to vegetable patch - chemicals could leech into food

Hi, I have a patio which slopes away from my house to allow rain water to run away from the house. It currently leads to a step down and onto the grass. I have previously used chemicals to clean the patio and then when it rains or I rinse it, the chemicals wash onto the grass and kill it.
I would actually like to grow some food in that spot of the garden as it gets great sunshine. But I'm worried about the chemicals getting into the food if I clean the patio.
I am considering building a raised bed and filling it with decorative stones for any chemicals to drain away. I could put the vegetables in pots on top of the stones. But lots of pots isn't ideal for growing veg I don't think.
Am I missing any obvious alternative ideas?

The Story: When a seemingly-powerless human walks straight through the wards shielding her bestiary, Aloe finds herself with a mystery on her shop floor - and with her merciless kin eager to get their hands on him, they've got a deadline on solving it.
---------------------------------
Double post, apologies xD grabbed the wrong chapter without realizing
---------------------------------
Daisy stood in the entryway of the Dancing Dragon. Slowly, her tail wagged back and forth. A low whine slipped from her throat.
Fumbling to jam on her boots, Aloe held a warning finger back toward her. “No.”
The knurl shuffled forward a step. A shape flashed out of nowhere behind her, taking a flying leap to land on her back. Rat clambered forward, all but climbing right onto Daisy’s head.
She groaned, shifting her gaze to the boisterous little pollam. “I said no. I’ll be back in an hour or two. Just…wait, okay?”
Standing, Aloe shoved the door open, closing it before either of the pair could renew their attempts to join her. Between the early night and the Moonbane potion she’d downed, it’d been a pretty good rest. She actually felt halfway refreshed, which meant today, she could finally get out and live a little.
The warm, pungent aroma of coffee preceded the sign of the coffeeshop itself. Aloe smiled to herself as she rounded the corner, greeted by the familiar sight. She didn’t wake early enough most mornings for coffee to be on the table as an option. Since she was up now, she’d decided, she might as well make the most of it.
A few quiet exchanges later, and she toddled off toward a table in the corner, cradling a hot mug of something that smelled divine. She couldn’t stop herself from glancing around, scanning the other patrons, but no one seemed to be paying her a moment’s worry. Logically, she knew that her glamour was perfectly in place, and yet, something about having your home get invaded the day before made you just a little bit jumpy.
Settling into her corner, she took her first sip, and smiled. It just tasted different out here, brewed by people who knew what they were doing, where the air didn’t taste like wet knurl fur and bird droppings. She had chosen wisely when she’d plunked the Dragon down within walking distance of this place.
The thought made her grimace, though—and as surreptitiously as she could, she slid her pocket ledger from her skirt.
The numbers tallied up for the balance put a tiny, sad scowl on her face. She was doing- okay. She was fine. The Dragon was ahead of its target goal for the month.
But not as far ahead as she’d like to be, and that was before she accounted for Daisy’s bad leg going sour again. If she factored in the cost of another healing, that’d throw them right back into the red.
“Wish I could do a damn healing myself,” she mumbled, her brow furrowing as she eyed the unchanging numbers. There was no changing what magic she had, but that didn’t stop her from wishing. Most of the beasts who’d wound up at the Dragon were there because their condition wouldn’t let them return to the Deeproads. That meant almost all of them put some level of financial drain on the shop. Selling some sunbird feathers didn’t bring in enough to make up for that.
Grimacing again, she gave one last hard look at the total, then leaned her head against one hand. “I’ll have to figure something out,” she mumbled.
There really wasn’t a ‘something’ here. The light-touched were just squatting here on Earth. Just a paltry fraction of a community, compared to the massive sprawl of the humans. Her sitting out in the boonies wasn’t going to get customers in the door to buy her magical components.
Her fingers danced across the hot outer walls of the mug. The coffee steamed up into her face, carrying a soothing, bean-scented damp with it. The only way she’d start picking up walk-in customers for the shop was if she threw in the towel. If she moved back into Windscour district itself, applied for a spot inside the magical boundaries of their shell, the magic-and-crystal pocket dimension that served as home. There, surrounded by the other light-touched, she might have a chance of turning the shop around.
But that’d mean she went back. That’d mean she gave in. If she wanted to return to the between-lands, she’d have to apply to Kyran himself. She already knew the smug bastard of a district lord would insist on that much. She wasn’t ready to do that. Not yet. Not ever.
If she wasn’t going to be able to pull enough from her idle customers, and she wasn’t willing to move back into Windscour where there were more customers to be had, the only route left for her was to increase her commission business. Aloe let a long, slow breath hiss out, her eyes tightening. That…would be doable. It would.
It’d just mean more field work, and that meant more risky gambles. There was always someone out there who needed a monster lured away from his Deeproads garden, who wanted to catch a beast for a particularly hard-to-get component.
This wasn’t her first time in the saddle, and Aloe hadn’t gotten herself gored yet. She had the right magic for the job—but since she wasn’t about to hurt any living creature, and certainly not a beast, that put a lot more risk on her shoulders.
A tiny grimace crossed her face as the memory of Daisy shambling up the stairs flashed before her eyes again, though. She couldn’t do nothing, and if she wanted to help, she needed the money for a proper veterinary healer. She’d do what she had to. Even if it meant taking some risks.
Gripping her coffee, she stood, pushing her chair back into place under the table. If she’d made up her mind, then she needed to get back to the Dragon. She’d open up for the day, spend the afternoon deciding where she’d take the shop next, and-
Aloe paused, her steps slowing. There was a tiny cluster around the single, almost-muted TV in the far wing of the coffeehouse. Considering most of the usual patrons seemingly made it their life’s goal to studiously leave each other the fuck alone, that was pretty notable.
Sure, she had a busy day ahead of her, but the chance to be a little nosy in the humans’ business was just too tempting to pass up. Aloe sidled closer, taking a speculative sip from her coffee-
-and choked, sucking in a mouthful of scalding-hot liquid. She spluttered, coughing. A few heads swiveled toward her.
She no longer cared what the humans were looking at. Her eyes were glued to the TV—and the photo of the man plastered up on it.
“Sounds like he never stood a chance,” she heard a woman standing nearby whisper. “That really sucks.”
“Isn’t that right around here?” her friend whispered back. The two moved away, their voices pitching lower.
Aloe stared up at the screen, hardly hearing them. A car crash, according to the banner across the bottom of the news. The guy just leapt out into the road, it said. Very tragic. No one expected it.
Her eyes drank in the still-familiar face of Rowen Cole.
The drone of the coffeeshop fell away, her vision narrowing. How? She’d delivered him straight to the district. They were supposed to wipe him and send him right back out. Had he dashed straight back out to get hit by a car? Just like that?
No, her thoughts whispered. That’s a coincidence. And she didn’t do coincidences—not when there was an easier, simpler answer.
Her nostrils flared. The coffee cup flexed as her fingers tightened around it, starting to quiver. Rowen Cole wasn’t dead—that much, she didn’t doubt for a second.
“Kyran, you bastard,” she whispered, still glaring daggers up at the screen. “What, you saw your prize and just couldn’t hold yourself back?” She should’ve expected it. She’d assumed he had a scrap of regard for life, but he didn’t, did he? He hadn’t even been concerned over her, so why would he care the slightest bit for some human he’d had dumped in his lap?
And now poor Rowen was stuck. Plucked from his human life. She shook her head, turning for the door. She had to-
Her steps slowed. She had to what? Go after him? It’d mean putting herself right back into the depths of Windscour District, and she’d always been dead set against that. And even if he was still alive, that didn’t mean Kyran would let him go just because she asked. Even if she asked nicely. Could she really do anything?
As the seconds ticked on, though, Aloe’s jaw tightened. Maybe she could, and maybe she couldn’t. Right now, all she knew was that she had to try. Pass or fail…she’d do her best.
Shouldering past a pair of men standing half out in the entryway, she hurried back out into the chilly fall air.
—------------------
The bus creaked to a halt. Aloe looked up, blinking through eyes still clouded by dozy sleep. The jeering laughter of the other passengers filled the air around her. Ahead, she could just barely make out the glittering waters of Lake Michigan between the buildings.
Well, she’d made it. Pushing herself upright, she rubbed at her eyes, lurching down the stairs of the bus before it could drive away and drag her off on another lap.
A yawn on her lips, she trudged along, eyes sharp on the landmarks. There were a great many entrances to Windscour’s shell network, but none of them were terribly close to where she lived. That’d been by design. It’d seemed a good plan at the moment, but now…She sighed, eyeing every tree and statue alongside the road as she strode onward. “Where are you,” she muttered under her breath. “Come here, you-”
A smile tugged at her lips. There—a stone arch, set off to the side of a garden. The humans might never recognize a thing, but she knew a planesgate when she saw one.
Slowing to a casual amble, she tugged her glamours a little tighter around her. A low, breathy note filled her lungs, twisting and twining up and down as she wove her spell. With a tremor of vibrato at the end, it caught hold, swathing her in a new layer.
There. If anyone was watching, she’d vanish as soon as they took their eyes off her, and if she’d done her work right, they wouldn’t think another thing of her. With that set, she veered off, heading toward that garden arch.
A pressure grew against her skin as she stepped closer, tingling like static electricity. She smiled tightly. Bingo—the portal’s aura. Not the world’s most comfortable sensation, but a dead ringer that she’d found the right mysterious hunk of stone.
Raising one hand, she traced out a symbol in midair. Her magic rose with the gesture, one of the first spells any light-touched learned. “Aloisia Miratin, long of Windscour,” she whispered. The words still rankled at her a little. She hated having to keep her citizenship. But, it did prove handy at moments like this, she had to admit.
Now, she stood waiting, feeling her magic sink into the aura surrounding the planesgate. A spark of resonance, and she stiffened, drinking deeply as the district’s distilled magic pooled around her. “That is nice,” she murmured, giving a rueful shake of her head. True shells were crafted from magic and from crystal, laid in the belly of the Earth to link one realm and the next. There was nothing in the human lands that could hold a candle to the raw strength of them. Even a working like the Dancing Dragon was just a minor construct in comparison, nowhere near the same league.
With a hum of energy, the portal came alive. She couldn’t see it, but she didn’t need visual cues to recognize the raw crackling of magic. “Thanks,” she murmured, brushing one hand toward the ancient stone. Her magic went with it, glancing across the equally-ancient spellwork. She didn’t think the spell could really understand her—spells weren’t usually good conversationalists—but, well…given what’d happened below them in the Deeproads, she liked to offer the portals any encouragement she could.
The crowd behind her was a little too close and a little too loud, though, so she sighed, swinging herself to face the planesgate straight on, and strode through.
Crossing into a shell was always a strange experience. Aloe grimaced, squeezing her eyes tight shut as the magic washed across her skin, dissolving any and all of her illusions. It was a bit like being doused in oil, or having hot, damp air blown in your face. Like you were walking through a film, stretching it farther and farther with every step you took.
Until the magic burst, and Aloe lifted her head, looking out across the edge city. Homes were laid out in clusters around the narrow roads, a few figures trudging around between them. The town was a dizzying mix of old and new, with class-windowed, modern architectural statement pieces plunked down right next to weathered, time-worn old wooden towers and townhouses.
Callaton—Edge city of Windscour, perched right around the perimeter of the district seat.. She sighed. Just about the last place she wanted to be right now—especially considering the hornet’s nest she was about to kick. Scuffing one foot against the ground, she shook her head, starting forward again. The sooner she stopped whining and did what she came here to do, the sooner she could go home to the Dragon.
Deeper into the town she went, trying not to lock eyes with any of the locals she passed. Shells were small almost by necessity, like neighborhoods built on a spiderweb of magic that linked, one branch to another, and formed the districts. She was a stranger here, so she’d stand out, and she very much did not want any of them talking about the strange blonde erelin they’d spotted walking their streets.
With every step she took, her own anxieties burned higher—but behind them, her rage. With the morning sun beating down on her from overhead, she was starting to think more clearly, and Kyran’s game was so transparent as to be laughable. He’d decided to pull this right under her nose. He’d gambled that she’d be too cowed, too uncomfortable to come confront him to his face. Well, she was uncomfortable. She’d come anyway.
She reached the end of the block, turning, and found Callaton coming to a sharp edge ahead—and at the road’s end, another archway. This one was more elegant, worked from polished brass and mounted atop a low plinth.
For all the bluster she’d summoned up a few moments before, her heart sank at the sight of that archway. “I’m really doing this, aren’t I?” she murmured, closing in on it. Her feet climbed the stairs to the plinths’ top. Her magic came as she whispered for it, one hand stroking the tines of the kalimba still hanging from her belt. Mere citizenship might’ve gotten her into Callaton, but it was just an edge city, and this portal would bridge the gap to the castle itself. Windscour Castle was the district seat, and it didn’t play as nicely.
Which meant that as much as it pained her, she…she needed her lineage, now. She needed the credibility that her blood and her magic would bring, no matter how far she’d run to avoid it up to now. She brushed a thumb across one of the long, slender metal bars, pouring a bit of herself into the low note that echoed forth.
The portal shuddered, its aura resonating as it tasted her magic. She held her breath—but no sooner had her magic vanished into the archway than the magic spilled outward. The planesgate came alive. For better or for worse, she was in.
And as the energy sprang to life, Aloe hesitated, eyeing the portal with distaste. She’d sworn she wouldn’t go near Windscour again. Once she’d set boots on the stones there, Kyran was going to try and make his move. More than that, the thought of heading back into that place made her head spin, filled her nostrils with the tang of salt.
“Buck up, Aloe,” she mumbled, swiping a hand across her mouth. “Can’t back out now.” If she knew Windscour’s cadre, she was already being watched. The thought of Kyran having himself a laugh at her standing out his door and then turning tail was infuriating enough to drive her back into motion.
Hands balled up into fists at her sides, she strode through the archway.
Once again, she was slammed with the vertigo, the sensation of being submerged head to toe in some invisible, slimy substance. It faded faster this time, and she shook her head, blinking away the last of it. It was easier when she was traveling from one seemshell into another, instead of making that first crossing from the surface world.
Lifting her head, she came to a stop, fixing her eyes on Windscour Castle.
‘Castle’ was a pretty strong term for the place, she’d decided upon first seeing it. It was just a collection of stone structures built across a gully, narrow wooden bridges connecting the ones on opposite sides of the ravine. A stream splashed down its length, pouring off into the misty clouds where the shell ended. All in all, the place was a bit too dismal and harrowed for her to really consider it ‘castle’-like.
The central spire almost made up for that. It rose at the compound’s heart, twisting and twining up in unnatural curves until it met a sharp roof at the peak, plated with green-touched copper. She had to crane her head back to catch sight of the observation platform at the tower’s highest point, barely visible in the mists.
It was just as she remembered it. Joy.
Grimacing, Aloe turned her gaze downward again, striding toward the double doors at the main building’s front. The hard part was about to begin.
Pushing the aged wood open, she stepped out of the fantasy landscape outside and into a cheerfully modern space within. The walls were still stone, and the rafters were open wooden beams, but there was a computer on the receptionist’s glass desk, a bland office chair scraping against the floorboards as she pushed back. “Hi,” she called, fixing a plastic smile on Aloe. “Welcome to Windscour District. Do you have an appointment?”
Aloe fixed a scornful look on the woman, fighting back distaste. There were enough people walking through the building that she couldn’t make a scene, but she had not missed the bureaucracy of the district seat. “I’m here to see Kyran,” she said, slowing for a scant moment on her brisk charge forward. “Is he in?”
She was treated to the sight of the receptionist’s face going delightfully blank, her confusion being replaced with empty, polite cheerfulness just as quickly. “I’m afraid my lord is very busy,” she said. “Could I ask your name?”
“Aloisia Miratin,” Aloe said, already kicking herself as the words came out. She couldn’t exactly ignore the lady—not if she wanted to get inside unchallenged—but throwing her name around wasn’t risk-free either. But it’d been thirty years. Surely-
With a sinking feeling, she watched the receptionist’s lips part. She knows.
“Of course,” the woman said, sliding back to her desk. She reached for her phone. “I’ll just-”
Aloe let out a low whisper, a song rising to her lips. A hum was enough for basic charms, and she could make do with any number of musical instruments for a simple slumbering spell, but neither of those would be enough right now. Having the receptionist keeled over at her desk fast asleep would be obvious.
The song was nothing special, just a lullaby she’d carried with her through the years, but her magic burned through every syllable, twining into the wispy, airy melody and coloring it with a mellow richness. A smile pulled at her lips, even if the situation was too dire to warrant it.
And she watched with grim satisfaction as the receptionist’s eyes went blank, her weight settling back into her chair.
You’ve done it now, her thoughts whispered. When Kyran finds out you’ve been enspelling his people-
Aloe sighed, looking away. It was just a bit of hypnosis. Considering everything he’d done to her, he had no right to complain. “Are we set?” she said instead, looking back to the receptionist. “Can I head in?”
“Go right ahead,” the receptionist said. Her words were distant, a blank smile stretching across her face. “I’ll buzz you in.”
“Thank you,” Aloe murmured. What few eyes had landed on her from the passing locals turned away again, disinterested. The door at the end of the hall buzzed as the lock flicked open.
She wasted no time in shoving her way through, accelerating. The first barrier was down—but not the last one. The soles of her boots clattered against the stark white tiles underfoot with every step. Her skin crawled. She already knew where Kyran would be. He’d found himself a prize, after all.
A flicker of nervousness flashed through her as she strode around the next corner, spotting a dark-haired man approaching from the other direction. Cason.
And sure enough, the man’s eyes widened as he spotted Aloe. His steps slowed. “Miss Aloisia,” he said. “I- I don’t-”
“I’m just here to see Kyran,” Aloe said. Her stride didn’t slow. Keep moving. Act like you belong.
“How wonderful,” Cason said, starting to smile. “I’m so glad to-”
“Is he in?” Aloe interrupted, with a twinge of regret. Cason wasn’t a bad sort, so far as the Windscour lot went. She just didn’t have time for him today.
His smile turned rueful. “He’s in the focarium. Hey, do you-”
“Thanks, Cason,” Aloe said, brushing past him with a wave. “Let’s catch up sometime.”
Behind her, she heard him start saying something, then fall quiet. The weight of his eyes lingered on her back as she hurried away, rounding the next corner.
The focarium, eh? She smiled a little, relieved. Well, that was better than the worst case scenario. Shoving through another set of doors, she strode out into a section of the castle still all but unfinished. The tiles vanished, turning back to time-worn stone. A damp settled through the air.
And as she advanced into the structure, the mists choking the hallways ahead of her cleared enough to show the light of runes glowing on the walls. The stones underfoot shifted, their steady lines warping into fluid shapes.
And at the hallway’s end, she saw a man standing in the brass-studded circle of the focarium, right beneath a crystalline shape that hung from the ceiling. Some new project of his, no doubt. As she stalked forward, she saw him stir. His red hair caught the light as he looked up, squinting through the haze.
Just as quickly, those eyes of his widened. “Aloe,” he said.
She was halfway across the flagstones by the time the honest surprise in his expression vanished, leaving cold calculation hiding in its wake. Her stomach churned. There you are. Before he could say a word, she closed on him, one finger rising to jut out between them.
“Where is he?” she said.
